750 ml bottle served cold into a chalice. LCBO purchase for $8.25 CDN. Interesting looking beer as we don't get many champagne beers here. Best before November 14, 2020.

Appearance - rich mildly hazy golden color with two plus fingers of creamy and frothy white head. Excellent retention lots of spotty lacing at the edges of the glass.

Smell - a touch of candi sugar with Belgian yeast and subtle vinous undertone. Subtle sweet fruits like peaches some to mind too, actual more like a dialled down tripel than anything I recognize.

Taste - initially a touch of sweetness, then some white grape flavor comes in. Fades away into no flavor at all. Mineral water is quite apparent here.

Mouthfeel- medium-light bodied with lots of carbonation. Dry finish and easy to drink.

Overall - the taste is a bit of a letdown otherwise this is a very good German rendition of something Belgian. Would enjoy again but probably wouldn't pay $8.25 to do so. Worth a try while the limited quantities are in stock.

Rügener Insel -Brauerei “Insel Kreide”
33 cl brown glass bottle wrapped in a paper label coded “MINDESTENS HALTBAR BIS ENDE: 9 23” but not sampled until 11 23
€5,25 @ Cerveceria Alemana, Madrid, ES

Look: Hazy straw gold. A short head of white drops shortly and leaves very little lacing.
Smell: Simply clean and grainy/wheaty malt with soft fruit.
Taste: The taste brings in flavors of white grape and gooseberry. It’s lightly acidic which helps to balance it in the finish as the bitterness is minimal. Dry , fruity, and lightly acidic finish.
Feel: Medium-light in body and crisp.
Overall: Really nicely done; well balanced and rounded.

750 mL paper-wrapped bottle purchased at the LCBO several years ago. Best before Nov 14 2020, so I've really missed the boat on this one. Consider this review with a grain of well-aged salt, if you consider it at all.

Pours a clear medium golden colour, giving rise to more than two inches of billowing, soapy, foamy white head that fades within five-plus minutes. Several swaths of sticky lace are scattered about in the process, which also leaves behind a tight collar and sudsy cap - looks good to me. Subdued aroma of fruity, yeasty notes - orchard fruit, wheat, grassiness, citrus and coriander, with light vinousness.

Nuanced flavour profile, vaguely reminiscent of a Belgian pale ale, crossed with a witbier, then inoculated with champagne. Wheaty malts power a bready, grainy front end, with candi sugar, green apple and white grape developing by mid-sip. Yeasty on the back end, with lemon peel, peppery/herbal hops, coriander, champagne and an earthy mustiness that dissipates into a moderately dry aftertaste. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that remains assertive & crisp right down to the last couple of sips - not exactly refreshing, but I can toss it back easily enough.

Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. I have my doubts that I'll ever see Insel Kreide on shelves again, at least locally... that's just how the LCBO tends to work. If I do stumble upon it once more, I'll have no choice but to review it as fresh as possible: this aged bottle has certainly held up serviceably, but it's no surprise that it's past its prime. Enjoyable nonetheless; an interesting brew that I'll still encourage other BAs to try.

L: golden yellow-green, slightly hazy, a finger of very tight white head that dissipates quickly
S & T: upon first taste, a mild malty sweetness like lightly toasted bread, almost belgian yeasty. A neutral, green, hoppy bitterness throughout. Almost seems like a cross between a pilsener and a tripel at first. But after a couple of sips, I get why it's called a champagne beer. The sparkling white wine and green apple comes through nicely at the end.
F: light; good sparkle, very drinkable

O: with this being my third beer of Insel, I think I like this brewery. This beer and their saison I wouldn't think twice about buying again. It's a fresh, dry beer without being sour, it is nice and light, and it has the perfect balance of being slightly different-than-usual while still being approachable. I imagine it would make for a perfect dessert beer in the summer.
I recommend it!

This is supposed to be a Champagne beer but it really is an evervescent witbier that is fermented dry to my taste buds. Not bad at all.

Slightly cloudy golden color with white head. Aroma has floral notes, peppery yeast esters and some mineral notes like sulfur. Taste starts with a light malt and wheat sweetness, mineral yeast, light yeast spice and a very light hop bitterness on the finish. Light body with medium carbonation. Quite smooth mouthfeel with a nice yeast character.

Pours a clear, deep golden coloration with a large, foamy, lasting head and visible carbonation Smells of light doughy malt, mildly spicy yeast esters, white grape and a grassy/herbal note, with a certain tartness as well. Definitely has a certain champagne aroma to it. Taste is a good, if not all that expressive balance of biscuity malt, fruity/spicey yeast esters and grassy/citrus hops, with notes of white grape, green apple, coriander and lime. Quite dry, with a light tartness as well. Finishes crisp and dry, with no discernible bitterness and some tart grape notes lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a light body and lively carbonation.

I'm finding it difficult to rate this to style, as it's the first beer of its kind that I've had, but I was surprised that it actually tasted a lot like I would have expected it to. Yes, this has a lot of a Witbier with the spicy yeast esters and citrus notes, but it's also quite dry and lightly tart, with bubbly carbonation and green apple and grape notes, which does kind of bring to mind a champagne. Does turn flat rather quickly though and shouldn't be drunken slowly.

Listed here as a WItbier; listed as 'Champagner Ale' on the bottle. Brewed with champagne yeast, I believe.

Very Pale, slightly hazy straw-yellow. Big, bubbly, white head that noisily dissipates leaving some beautiful lacing. Bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass like a champagne would.
The nose is definitely that of a Witbier: strong wheat aroma, coriander, lemony. A nice flowery/herbal character in addition to the spiciness.
The taste is dominated more by the spices than anything else, with a lemony - but not overly bitter - finish. I was hoping for a dry, champagne-like finish, but it wasn't there.
Light, watery body with not as much carbonation as expected from the bubbles in the glass. In fact, given what I was expecting from the appearance, I would consider it somewhat flat.
Overall, nothing special, but could be refreshing on a hot summer day, though.
