Very Good
Notes: This IPA delivers a sweet Pineapple, Mango nose with tropical flavors courtesy of a carefully selected house yeast strain. Blond, full bodied, deceptively drinkable.

Poured a cloudy yellowish body with one finger head and lace patches. Touch of sourness and peppery spice along with funk in aroma and even hints of tropical fruit sweetness. It is a hopped up saison and this is noticeable in taste as a strong taste of dry hops gives off a dryness and a sharp orange taste, which mixes and balances with some funky sourness, smooth yeast twang which helps beer go down easy and there are notes of tropical fruit sweetness. An interesting saison that lays off the funky, sour aspects of beer and goes for more hops and fruit notes and finishes off dry and crisp.

16oz can with Lisa at home, about $5 from CBC. Beautiful can and a good looking pour with thick lacing, so far, so good. Nose is off though with some rough phenols and plastic mixing with coconut and pineapple. Picked out the Brett Trois right away - sometimes this yeast can kick off some nasty phenols like this, maybe too high of a ferm temp? Taste is better with a smoother profile of citrus, tangerine, pineapple. Moutfeel is pretty nice, smpoth, well carbed, medium light body. If they can figure out the aroma issue, this might be a really nice beer - could up the body a bit too.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. March 29th 2018.

Slightly clear bodied, with a good mix of beaming orange and dark chestnut brown edges for the body color. Clear enough to see some fine carbonation, but opaque enough to provide a good light bulb orange glow. Big easy controlled white and fine swiss cheese bubbled head. Makes a tall three finger plus height, and good island top. Sheets of ring lacing, make for a fine all around appearance.

Nose is strangely quiet. A faint touch of caramel, almost toffee crisp like malt, but really.. Nothing? There's hardly any sense of hop aroma on this at all. Makes for a very neutral brew on the nose.

Palate makes some very lacking pleasure. A solid malt backbone barely makes for at least an average drinking experience. Muted bitterness with a very indistinct malt flavor of all things. Watery hop quality and hard to even pick an angle other than maybe papper packet pepper bitterness.

I'd say more but, I can't, cause while this isn't awful, there is just nothing going on here which is kind of shocking in the IPA realm.

Firm white head persists. Straw, golden yellow color, clear, until some yeast / dregs poured from bottom of can.

Aroma is fruity and slightly dank.

Medium-low bitterness. Flavor is tropical fruit-like hops. Slightly dry, though has enough single-demension malt to stand up to hops.

Mouthfeel is low to medium. Smooth, with no astringency.

Overall, a nice, tasty IPA when fresh.

It's hard to read the dots on the bottom of the can but it looks like they say: 11/16/016 04:08:02
It's probably also important to mention that despite the style being listed as a saison/farmhouse ale the can lists this beer as a "Tropical India Pale Ale."

Appearance: The body of the beer is crystal clear with a lovely bright gold colored body magnifying large carbonation bubbles leading to a large thick, fluffy, creamy white head. Great retention and lacing.

Aroma: It has a bit of a soft pineapple aroma. It's nice but not very strong. Just a touch of alcohol on the nose.

Taste: Up front I get a strong alcohol flavor with just a bit of cedar and some orange peel. The finish is bitter with a sawdust-like flavor. After a while the finish got just a tad buttery. A bit of pine at the end too.

Mouthfeel: Good raspy bitterness which is strong but expected. A bit of a muddy character to the body.

Overall: It's not a bad beer but the overwhelming alcohol flavor combined with the strong bitterness doesn't do it any favors. While it is decent enough to drink it doesn't depart enough from the average American IPA to make it memorable. I wouldn't likely drink it again and it isn't one I would really recommend.

Excellent pour from the Cheese Store in Williamsburg, Virginia. Loved the fruity, tropical flavors especially the aftertaste. Will definitely be trying this one again. Thank you to the Cheese Store staff for setting this up. UPDATE: Got two growlers from Commonwealth after my wife asked to go and get some....she loved it and she's not a microbrew drinker. Definitely loved the taste the more I had it!

Hazy, but not egregiously. Gold with a greenish tint. Big white head with good retention and lacing.
Lots of pinapple and mango aroma, just a hint of dank.
Big hop flavor that follows the aroma, plus a little pine. Not much in the way of malt. Nice bitterness for a NEIPA. Not sweet at all.
Full bodied with nice carbonation
Definitely one of the better NEIPAs out there.

Pours a murky golden color. The head is a finger high and barely off-white in shade. Retention is excellent, and a nice ring of lacing clings to the glass.

Much like Papi Chulo, this is alluringly tropical just by judging from the aroma. Pineapple is the dominant note, augmented by mango, tangerine, and papaya. There are grassy yet dank touches to the hop profile. Malt is very gentle, only providing a touch of table sugar. The only thing this lacks is more than a couple dimensions.

The taste isn't a letdown - but maybe it's a bit less bold than the aroma suggested. Still, initial qualities of pineapple, tangerine, and mango wash over the palate nicely. Notes of white bread and sugar cookie appear on the middle. While there's little in the way of pine or grass, the finish is nice and rindy - this ends up giving it some bitterness. Lemon and lime qualities really ramp up nicely as more is consumed. This has more bitterness than the typical NE IPA...but is that a bad thing? The bitter bite (I think) really adds another desired dimension but never quite kills the desired balance. It's just about everything I look for from an IPA taste-wise.

While it's a bit chalky from the yeast presence, it compensates by being very dry yet crisp. The body is medium to medium-heavy, and it never quite gets in the way, either. Carbonation is low: this is more reliant on natural dryness.

Commonwealth is now 2 for 2 with me. Actually, I think this is superior to Papi Chulo due to the more assertive flavor profile. It's biting in all the right ways, and I most certainly will seek this out in the future.
