Brewed by:
Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States

Style: Belgian Saison

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
To pay tribute to our new familial ties, brewmasters Steven Pauwels and Phil Leinhart chose to create a Saison, the traditional Belgian farmhouse ale. They began by brewing two separate batches of beer, both at Boulevard Brewing Company, each with a grain bill of pale malt, oats, rye, corn, and wheat, subtly spiced with coriander, grains of paradise, and dried peels of lemons and oranges. Perle was used as a bittering hop with Safir and Saaz added for aroma. Each of the two batches was fermented with the unique house yeast from our respective breweries. The batches were then blended post-fermentation, allowing both of the distinctive yeast signatures to manifest in the finished beer. The result is crisp and bready, with a bracing hoppiness and a hint of spice lingering in the background. Join us in raising a glass to family.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Dark golden orange in color. hazy in appearance. Muted saison flavors of banana, lemon peel and clove. Good but I'll take Tank 7 over this any day.

Ommegang presentation here, label n bottle, caged and corked

Pours clouded darker honey amber, nice looking fine bubble head, goes to a solid film, thin collar and high and well developed lacing

Lite honey and mild coriander on the nose

Flavorful saison, Zesty, fruity, citric with an earthy hop bite, also with wheat malt notes, nutty yeast, coriander again and lite pepper.

Worth trying this collab. from two heavy weights

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of white head that fade into a thin patchy layer. Leaves some decent lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian style aroma with good hints of fruits and spices. Belgian yeast with some farmhouse funk and spice hints of clove, coriander, white pepper, and grains of paradise. Bready hints of pale malt, wheat, grains, and cracker. Good mix of fruit esters with hints of lemon zest, green apple, orange, pear, and grapes. Light hints of earthy hops. A very solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a zesty, yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian taste with notes of fruit, spice, and grains. Upfront Belgian yeast with some farmhouse funk. Spice notes of clove, white pepper, coriander, and grains of paradise. Pale malt with some wheat, grains, and cracker. Big mix of zesty fruits with notes of lemon, orange peel, green apple, pear, and white grape. Background notes of spicy and earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a fairly high level of carbonation. Nicely spicy and juicy with a crisp and fairly drying finish. Alcohol is smoothed out nicely.

Overall: A pretty good take on a Belgian style Saison. Nice mix of spices and fruit esters with the grainy malt.

From a growler bought today at Hop City in B'Ham, Al. Had a tulip glass there yesterday. They were about to switch out but was still there today. This evening I poured into an Imperial Pint.

Appearance: a very clear amber, weak tea color. Very appealing. The head was short but I know they were near the end of the keg. Still there was a good amount of the tiny bubble drifting up, with a bit of lacing as the level dropped. Score: 4.0

Aroma: nice sweet malts. Not much in the hops but Brewers description led me to expect this. There was a sweet mown lawn yeast scent but it was mild. I wish that it had more of an attractive aroma. Score 3.75

Taste: There's the funk! I detect the barnyard. It's not nasty, it's "well maintained ". I taste a very good spice melange. Bitter orange & cracked pepper. I find this very much to style (at least of those of which I've had). Score: 4.10

Mouthfeel: a good body. Some good chewiness considering it's light Amber color. I would have liked the carbonation to have held up at a slightly higher level, but I assume this was at least in part due to the keg level. Score: 3.95

Overall: a very good, balanced Saison. Boulevard & sister company Ommegang have done well. If, as in my earlier review, 3.0+ means yes I'll have one; now 3.75 + means : yes Please & I want more of this. Overall score: 3.95.

BBD of May 2015

Pours an amber/honey color with 2 fingers of eggshell colored head. Stays effervescent, good lacing & above average head retention

S: Pears, melons, slight grassiness, some perfumy notes

T: Follows the nose, a little honey sweetness & winesap apples up front. Over-ripe pears & melon as this warms, some mead-like flavors, & dryness & muscadines. Finishes fruity, slightly dry with muscadine & honey

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation, skews sweet

This is alright but would rather have Saison Brett or Tank 7 any day. Just not reaching me
