The CallingThe Calling
Notes: The Calling is an undeniable IPA we were driven to make. It's our tribute to like-minded dreamers, adventurous spirits, and glass half-full optimists. It's also our most heavily hopped beer ever, bursting forth with unmistakable tropical fruit and pine hop aromas and flavor supported with a slightly sweet malt character, tapering to a crisp, dry finish. Heed your call and enjoy.

Excellent beer from BLVD. Citrus hoppy goodness. 8.5 abv is hidden well. Nice sunrise yellow-orange color with good carbonation. Nice head. Nice favor. Nicely done.

Picked this up as part of a build-your-own-sixer at Four Firkins in Minneapolis. I'd tried a few of Boulevard's brews while on vacation in Kansas City a few years back, so I was pleased to find this. Bottled on date says its good for another two months. Poured right from the fridge into my tulip glass.

L: Pours a nice warm amber with about a half-inch of head that falls fairly quickly but sticks around on the surface and leaves good cling. Hazy, with a good deal of visible carbonation.

S: Big apricot bouquet on this one. There's also some peach and tangerine in the mix, along with a bit of caramel malt. One of the nicer fruity aromas I've encountered in an IPA.

T: Lots of sweetness up front--despite the nose, most of this sweetness seems to come from the caramel malts. There's still a lot of sweet that seems to come through in the form of fruit, though, with apricot and tangerine notes clearly coming through at the front. It's just a little bit tart in the front and into the middle, where there's more citrus rind hop notes coming through, along with some clear alcohol that actually helps to keep some of that sweetness in check. The back end has some more caramel and bready malts, but it's very much dominated by a citrus rind hop bitterness.

F: Medium-bodied. Effervescent at the front--more bubbly than creamy. The middle is bright from the hops, and this continues with a bitter close. Quite drinkable.

O: I really enjoy this DIPA. It has a ton more fruit presence than most doubles I've had, and I really enjoy that. The clear alcohol is masked well, mostly due to the sweetness of the malts and the fruit profile. I would definitely recommend giving this one a try, especially if you like those apricot notes in your IPA.

Light orange color with little head. Nose very tropical with grapefruit and a little piney notes. Taste of citrus, orange, grapefruit, mango with hints of pine and resin. Lingering finish. Very good IPA from boulevard. Smokestack series beers way better than their regular lineup. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

For those who have fallen under the lupulin spell, seduced by the lovely perfume of hops and hopelessly following that aromatic, flavor and bitter trail through the crowded craft beer market, Boulevard's imperial IPA comes calling.

The Calling casts a faintly hazy translucence upon shades of gold and straw. Its steadfast white cap begins to shed its radiant fragrance onto the nose. Red grapefruit and blood orange precede a plethora of tropical scents that waft over the senses and prove irresistible of that first sip. Candied malts lay a soft pillow of honey, caramel and simple syrups to prepare the tastebuds for the onslaught of hops to come.

As the malty sweetness slowly retreats, its those tropical hops that take command of the session, delivering wave after wave of pineapple, peach, passionfruit, mango, apricot and kiwi before trailing with a smooth bitterness of citrus peel and sweet, freshly whittled pine. A spicy finish pulls from the bitterness and warms the palate with its light and peppery solvents.

Medium-light in body, any semblance of balance falls directly on the hops as the malt continues to dry and the flavors crispen. A refreshing finish ensues and brings a deeply bitter aftertaste with tethers of fruit sweetness teasing the retro-olfactory senses.

BBD 07/15/15

Pours an effervescent gold with 3 fingers of rocky pearl colored head. Very nice head retention & lacing

S: Some tropical & breadyness

T: Follows the nose, plus pineapple & mango up front. Bready sweetness, pineapple & mango continue this as this warms, plus pineyness. Finishes with a flourish of tropical flavor, a little grapefruit rind & grassyness

MF: Medium bodied, moderate carbonation & pretty nice balance

Drinks easy for the ABV, like this better than Double-wide, still not a style these guys have owned yet IMHO

the beer poured a hazy golden brown with a one finger head that leaves little to no lacing in the class. got this beer in a craft beer variety pack that proved to be the best of the beers in the box. the taste is hoppy but not overly bitter. the aroma is very citrusy and pleasant. i only wished that there were more than two in the box.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two finger white head with decent retention.

Smell: A very juicy and piney hop forward aroma with big hints of citrus fruit. Upfront scent of citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, apricot, pineapple, and passion fruit. Also some grassy and piney hop hints. Soft pale malt hints of biscuit, cracker, and yeast. A very good juicy and ripe aroma.

Taste: As juicy and dank as it smells, a big ripe taste of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus hop notes of grapefruit, mango, lemon, orange, pineapple, apricot, and passion fruit. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Backing pale malt presence with soft notes of biscuit, grains, cracker, and yeast. A really good juicy hop driven taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Ripe, juicy, and oily with a drying finish. Alcohol heat is hidden well by the hops.

Overall: A pretty great take on an Imperial West Coast Style IPA. Really nice juicy citrus hop flavors. This is up there with the big Cali IPA’s.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Deep bronze to amber orange body color, bit of a glow, bit opaque slightly but not hazy. Nice contrast for the carbonation to rise slowly as it does up real nicely against a very good colored backdrop. Head is quite soapy but manages a good hearty three fingers and bone white color, with shampoo retention and clumpy lacing. Island creamy puck as it settles in the centre. Very nice appearance.

Nice hop aroma, some sensing floral and earth notes, and an intersting pickling spice like aroma. Mild sensing light malt sweetness, but hop dominant and forward. Very solid and nice, if a bit unique and slightly odd.

Palate comes with a good hop angle that just hits the right notes. Goes to much more tropical and pineapple flavors with a tolerable sweetness. Very aromatic finish almost herbal tea mixing in with soft tannic qualities. Chewy and leafy body, but light and at least not watery on the mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Hints slightly towards a juicy body but not quite.

Overall a very nice light take on a double IPA, very satisfying.

My first review of a beer.. I went looking at my local shop for an IPA to have with a cigar. I chose a strong, straight ligero cigar and I feel that this matched well. No overpowering aftertaste or bitterness. Fairly smooth, actually very smooth and full of medium body flavor. Great pairing with my smoke.

Much more in line with todays AIPAs. This beer is low on malt and heavy on the hops. More of a stone fruit hop profile than your usual IPA. I love it! I will definitely be enjoying this one again.

Every beer Boulevard does is FANTASTIC..... minus their IPAs. Until now.

Hop forward. Clean and crisp. Drinks like 6.5 - 7% ABV. Not 8.5%.Well done. Refreshing is an understatement. Lemon, Mango citrus. Dry and crisp. Sessionable mouthfeel for the ABV. Yeah, again. Sessionable...

Only flaw is a mild buttery smell & taste that accompanies everything else. Really have to look for it, but it's there. Whatever. Regardless, I'd buy this agian.

Poured into a balloon glass.

Look: The body is opaque with light rusty tangerine as the color. A frothy light cream cap sits on top. Light patches of lacing.

Aroma: Lots of wood like pine, cedar. Grapefruit citrus on the back end.

Taste: Like the aroma with lots of wood notes in here starting with a dry, spicy cedar. Moves into tropical fruit territory before finishing with pine and grapefruit citrus.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: HAs floral fruitiness, lots of wood and pine, and of course bitter citrus. In other words, they cover all the bases here, and it's good.

Pours a pretty light golden color; head production and retention are fine.

On the nose, citrus, pine, and tropical fruit present a somewhat floral bouquet, but nothing really grabs my attention completely.

The palate carries grainy pale malts and a nice blend of hops similar to the nose, with the accent more on juicy notes than on resin or pine.

This is a DIPA that drinks closer to a single, owing at least partially to the 8.5% ABV. There isn't as much malt presence as in many DIPAs, but on the other hand, it isn't a complete hop bomb either. It occupies a somewhat awkward middle ground, but it's a very drinkable beer.

Best by 7/16/15. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a bright golden with a slight haze; small white head that leaves decent retention and lacing. The aromas are pretty dank. Lots of peach and mango. Hints of grapefruit. Some sweet candied malts too. The flavors are bittersweet. More grapefruit and citrus blended with some tropical notes. More peach and mango, along with hints of pineapple. There's also fresh pine needles in the mix. Although there's a subtle sweetness, the hops shine. Mouthfeel is nice. It's medium-bodied with very active carbonation. It's spritzy and smooth. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Clean, crisp and refreshing.

This is a very nice DIPA. It's not a super elite example of the style, but it's well done. Nice hop profile along with impressive craftsmanship equals The Calling. Recommended.
