Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Calling is an undeniable IPA we were driven to make. It's our tribute to like-minded dreamers, adventurous spirits, and glass half-full optimists. It's also our most heavily hopped beer ever, bursting forth with unmistakable tropical fruit and pine hop aromas and flavor supported with a slightly sweet malt character, tapering to a crisp, dry finish. Heed your call and enjoy.

In reading other reviews, it appears this beer varies significantly. The one I had, a good month before the "best by" date, was lousy. It tastes like a Belgian IPA, not an American imperial IPA. Bad sample, or mis-categorized beer?

Really didn't like this at all. Very dry bitter champagne taste along with an absence of hops. It's not worth the 8.5 percent buzz. Drain pour.

Thanks to fiver29 for sending me a twelve of stuff. Good stuff, great stuff, & TBD stuff, including this. 12 oz. bottle.

Dumped wholeheartedly into the glass, minimal carbonation, hazed & confused orange, with a nasal quality of damp earth & pale malt. Huh. No where to go but up!

The Calling is more like the The Hoarse Crying. Way too much dank in here, & it’s raining men. What? Glancing down a few reviews there seems to be some issues & it appears I have one. Orange that’s been simmering in a 104 degree swamp for a few days is what this tastes like. Sautee some pale malts, add a truckload of peaches, sweet malts, good heartland mud, & you have a wretched mess. This should have come in a nip glass.

Eh. Malty with a side of dank & weird just isn’t my bag; better than the acting on Antonio Banderas, but not by much. Not good.

There are so many great IPA's out there but alas, The Calling is not one of them. The dominant impression left by this beer is "boring." It's pleasantly golden, and not overly hoppy or overly bitter or overly anything. It just doesn't have much going for it. It's not a bad beer, but I can't imagine going out of my way to purchase it again. Think of Fat Tire, but with a heavier taste experience.

Every boulevard beer I have tasted is too sweet. I find The Calling headache-inducing due to sweetness combined with alcohol bite. Not a "bad" beer, but the malts are way too dominant, as is the alcohol. Otherwise there is some appealing complexity here.

Bought a very expensive 4 pack. There was significant variability among them. One tasted like a Belgium beer...nothing like a DIPA. The others were decent but not world class.

Smelled and tasted alcohol sweet. The malt profile was much higher than I prefer. It is actually a dead ringer for my latest home brew ......I wish that had more teeth as well.

10-7-16 (draft, Laurel Tavern, Studio City) faint "tropical" aroma, not that much different than the "Fortunate Islands" I just finished, maybe a smidge maltier, somewhat caught in between styles, 3.1
