Spring Belle marries the crisp, spicy flavor of a traditional farmhouse saison, with its citrusy hop notes, to the fresh floral aromas of chamomile, rose petals, and elderflower.

The floral smell and taste is like women's shampoo or hairspray, the feel was bone dry and crisp good for the style. Wish they had used brett or citrus instead of flowers. Blvd usually has outstanding belgo beers, this falls short.

Boulevard Brewing Co. "Spring Belle"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST BY 07/02/15"
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ on 8/22/15 - 20 days past the best by date, and now 69 days past

Boulevard must be doing quite well with their bottling line as I only find minor oxygenation in the flavor of this now probably 8 month old beer; and to be honest, I'm not even sure what I'm finding is oxygenation because it's got such a floral character to it, and it might be something related to that. I don't find any oxidation in the nose either, but again that's most likely because it's so floral, with a very rose-like aroma. It's not overly bright though, which is great because that would've probably ruined it.

The flavor displays the same floral character, and I'm not sure if I'm finding some hops in there as well (perhaps a bit of grassiness). Again, it's at a pleasant level, and although you know it's there you wouldn't necessarily pick it out as a "flower beer" if it was just handed to you. Beyond that it's pretty simple as a fairly solid, straight-forward golden malt base supports everything else, the Belgian character is just enough to give it a little life with some sweetish clove, and it's backed by a firm bitterness and yeasty spiciness (soft black pepper, coriander) that keeps everything dry throughout. It's a little bit basic in that way, but it's a very good "basic", with those three components (malt, yeast, floral) giving it plenty of character. Everything works quite nice together, giving it a synergy that leaves it rounded, balanced, and polished.

Although I initially scoffed at the price of $2.49 (and now still do realizing that I was charged full price for old beer - I thought I could trust Total Wine & More), I now feel that it's completely worth it. The floral character is quite unique, and the flavoring to do that probably added to the cost; as I'm assuming did the slower, cooler ferment to keep the yeast in check. It's not a beer I'd drink often, but I'll look forward to enjoying one of these after work on the front porch next spring.

Pours gold with a white head. Laces better than expected. Definitely smells floral. Tastes full bodied finishes a little bit spicy. Overall, this confirmed my liking of saisons.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. I normally love most Boulevard beers but this was just OK for me. It had an very bright golden yellow color that was over the top compared to the flavor. It had a floral and yeast aroma but it didn't seem to blend well. The floral smell flowed into the flavor and it was not that great. Overall, an average beer bordering on so-so.

- Saison brewed with chamomile, rose petals and elderflowers. Served in a spiegelau ipa glass. Best by 07.02.15. Consumed 07.01.15. close one.

A: Pristine lemon-brass coloring with a raging, quick-paced rate of macro-effervesce. Foamy, off white head has a cottage cheese like texture, firmly holding while leaving a very good coverage of lacing as a calling card behind.

S: Strong aroma of freshly sliced lemons, fresh bread followed by some lightly dry flowery notes, rose-water, of good duration and strength.

T: Strong flowery taste, floral lemon peel with a lightly dry grainy backing of pilsner and hay notes. The flowery taste is fresh and more noticeable then on the nose, dried blueberries, fresh shrubbery with some dried daisies and sunflower. Some dry rose petals which are very distinguishable here, mingles with a herbal tea and flowering finish with at touch of bittering saffron and grassy notes from the hops.

M: Good crispness tingly carbonation, sharp with a light creaminess and dry pilsner like grain feel on the tongue.

O: This is not for everyone, or for those looking for a traditional musty saison with a yeasty flair. This has a very strong flowery taste which is the focus of this drink, the malt bill is a bit thin here, but perhaps to let the flowery aspect through a bit more. This is differently an unique experience with a flower laced beer i have yet to experience on this level. Nothing says spring like a glass full of liquid flowers. An unique try but not one you are going to do repeatedly, but one that surely sets itself apart from other examples of flower type beers.
