Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Combining CCB’s expertise with tropical fruit flavors and Boulevard’s love of pale ales, Collaboration No. 5 – Tropical Pale Ale begins with a base of soft pilsner malt layered with Maris Otter, Munich and caramel malts. Huge late hopping with a blend of Mosaic, Citra, Lemondrop and Azacca lends bright flavors of mango, pear, blueberry and citrus to a pale ale featuring slightly toasted biscuit and caramel/toffee notes. Infused with freshly sliced grapefruit at the conclusion of the boil, our tropical pale ale is briefly aged on passion fruit and grapefruit at the end of fermentation resulting in a refreshing acidity and tropical fruit flavor and aroma. At 7.3 ABV and 55 IBUs, Collaboration No. 5 – Tropical Pale Ale finishes slightly tart with bright citrus character from dry-hopping with Lemondrop, Azacca and Pacific Jade hops.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice. Best by date of 2/13/2016.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of white head with decent retention.

Smell: A very juicy and tropical hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and pine. Big upfront scent of citrus fruit with some grapefruit, passionfruit, orange peel, mango, lemon zest, pineapple, and melon. Earthy hop hints of pine and grass. Soft malt hints of grains, cracker, and yeast. A very fruity and good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a pretty juicy and tropical hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, mango, orange peel, pineapple, lemon zest, and melon. Some earthy and herbal hops with notes of pine and grass. Backing malt notes of cracker, grains, and yeast. A pretty good juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy with a fairly drying finish.

Overall: A pretty good spin on a Pale ale. Huge tropical fruit flavor even with an older bottle. Really nice collaboration.

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an unmarked pint glass.

A: Mild hazy bright gold, with a few fingers' worth of big fluffy white head with good retention. Lots of small bubble carbonation running up the edges of the glass.

S: Melon, papaya, pineapple and citrus. Cracker malt backbone, and a yeasty presence in the background.

T: Mango and tangerine citrus with pith bitterness. Cracker malts. Grapefruit and bitter near the swallow. I'm still getting some yeasty flavors as well - not off-putting, but a little strange in a pale ale. It tastes like this might be fermented with a saison yeast - though I don't think that's the case.

M: Light body, low alcohol presence. Carbonation sensation is on the low side for style, but adequate.

O: Really quite enjoyable. I didn't have much in the way of expectations going in but I liked it. Nice blend of flavors.

Pours an orangish pale amber color. Excellent clarity. Head is a solid 2 fingers of large bubbled foam. Light tan in color and dissipates at a moderate pace. Medium amount of lacing left behind.

Aroma lives up to the name, big tropical fruit. Mango, grapefruit, papaya, and lemon. Caramel malt. Sweet, juicy pear.

Taste follows the aroma. Fantastic fruit flavors. Grapefruit and mango lead. Good malt balance. Caramel, biscuit, and mild brown sugar. Lemon, pear, ripe red apple. Hops are fruity and noticeable but blend well.

Nice smooth mouth feel. Mild hop bitterness mixes with fruity sweetness. Medium carbonation. Tropical flavors linger.

Maybe the best collaboration beer I've had. Big fan of both Boulevard and Cigar City. Easy drinking but with big flavors,

The concept of this beer sounded amazing...a tropical American pale ale.

I went out of my way to seek out a 4 pack of this joy, but was sorely disappointed...maybe it's just my west coast palate.

Very tropical aroma, but more amber with the base
I'd rather envision a super light crisp body with tropical fruit notes with resounding bitterness. I think they went too far with this pale ale.

For some, but not for me.

This is a gorgeous pale ale. Lots of hops but the fruit juice doesn't seem to blend in as well as I'd normally like. Still very good. Glad I picked it up.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into IPA glass.

Appearance: Cloudy orange with decent white cap.

Smell: The passion fruit and grapefruit essences are very prominent, with some tropical and citrus hop notes underneath.

Taste: Also driven by the essences of passion fruit and grapefruit. This has an excellent hop profile but is unfortunately buried underneath.

Feel: moderate carbonation, medium body, semi-dry finish.

Overall: Tasty, unique and easy-to-drink, but I wish the actual hops came through more.

Gold to copper in color with a trace of haziness. There's a half inch head of tightly packed beige head present. As advertised in name the aroma is filled with notes of pineapple, mango, and passion fruit. I taste a nice light grain note with the tropical hops playing a faint background note. The mouth is fairly light and delicate.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass. BB date stamp: 13 Feb. 2016. 7.2% ABV listed on label. .

Slightly hazy apricot-amber body with lots of visible carbonation. The rather small head turns out to be very durable and leaves admirable lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Moderately strong with tropical fruit and herbal notes. Complex and seemingly variable.

Flavor: a complex, well-balanced mix of hops dominate but allow for the bready malts to show as well. Tropical, floral and herbal notes, in that order of strength.

Overall: excellent for style in all respects. I did marginally prefer the flavor over the relatively pungent aroma.

Best by date of 02/13/16

Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and orange amber in color with an off-white, finger width head. Sub-par retention, reducing to a broken, nearly barren surface with a thin ring of suds around the edge of the glass. Not much in the way of lace, with a few spots here and there.

Smell - Has a bit of a champagne-like aroma. Bright, fruity character hinting at apple, grape skin, passion fruit, pineapple and light citrus. Faint bready undertone.

Taste - Follows the nose. Tropical, but restrained flavors hitting on pineapple zing, a bit of green apple, mild mango, light grapefruit bitterness and a faint of banana-like funk. Malt notes are fairly hidden, providing a distant, generic bready sweetness. Bittersweet finish, with a trace of passion fruit and lingering citrus pith character.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with bitey carbonation. Goes down fairly smooth, with an easy, dry finish.

Overall - It's an odd one, but it lives up to the name. 'Sparkling ale' comes to mind, because it exhibits a degree of champagne-like qualities. If I had one knock, I feel it's a bit too restrained, and I kinda wish they would have done this as an IPA, because it could have been killer.
