Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our entry in the very popular pumpkin ale market is an eccentric one, with pumpkin flavor scarcely present, upstaged by cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger. A pleasant tartness prevails, with barrel aging providing a mellow roundness, and Brettanomyces putting the "unk" in Funky.

Another bottle! My backlog is not wholly of my own doing, although it is my undoing.

From the bottle: "Spiced Sour Ale".

How intriguing! My esteemed fellow reviewer, NeroFiddled, really put it well in his review & I have no aspirations to outdo him.

I Pop!ped the cap & gave it a rather heavy-handed pour for no other reason than anxiousness. This produced two-plus fingers of foamy, tawny head that quickly dissipated. What?!? It isn't THAT hot & humid in here today! Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, prompting The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Midas & Mammon to get off of my couch in the living room, where they were watching daytime teevee, and rush into the kitchen for a taste. Nose held the usual suspects of spices, but where was the sour? Generally, I can sense Brett pretty quickly. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, just better than watery. The taste began with the cinnamon, clove, ginger, allspice spiciness that is so familiar by now and continued with a light sweetness, leading me to wonder if I had been misled. The finish put the lie to that notion! It was less sour than tart, but boy, did I feel it in the hinges of my jaw! How to go from semi-sweet to utterly dry in the blink of an eye! Phew. Wow! I have to admit, this was very different.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden orange with a medium fizzy creamy white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is perfumey pumpkin spice and some vegetal earthiness.

The flavor is tart sour fruits with some earthy pumpkin spices. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very watery.

Overall, not that great.

Funky Pumpkin is just that funky. It stated sour ale and if you are not prepared for that taste it can throw you into a funk but overall it was good, you had the taste of pumpkin and the pow of sour and it was a pleasant surprise

Pours clear, orange-brown with one inch head and high carbonation. Taste is sour mix with cinnamon, clove, and brown sugar. Spicing is there, but is somewhat muted by the sourness. Mouthfeel is really light. Decent and interesting beer. Glad I tried it, but I would not want more than one.

Copper color with a light haziness. There's a fingernail of frothy off white surrounding the rim and perhaps a third of the rest of the top. Complicated nose of pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and an undercurrent of Brett. I taste it and there's almost an apple juice like sweetness in the forefront. I also get pumpkin pie spice, plenty of cinnamon and nutmeg. The mouth is fairly dry and crisp.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A spicy, earthy, and somewhat sour aroma with a scent of pumpkin spice and sour brett. Upfront presence of pumpkin spices with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Funk is fairly subtle with some acidic hints of brett yeast. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy, earthy, and funky taste with notes of pumpkin spice and brett sourness. Upfront taste of pumpkin spice with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Funk is stronger in the taste with some good notes of brett lacto yeast. Fairly acidic with some wine like tartness. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Crisp, tart, and drying on the finish.

Overall: A pretty unique and good twist on a Pumpkin ale. Odd combo of pumpkin spice and brett but it works pretty well.

Boulevard Brewing Co. "Funky Pumpkin"
on tap @ Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden, Austin, TX
$5.50/pint

I consider myself lucky to have found this on tap, or even to have found it at all, as it's now without question my favorite pumpkin beer. Whatever I've said in the past, put it aside, this is the one!

But is it a pumpkin beer? Boulevard states that the "pumpkin flavor (is) scarcely present", but when is it ever? It's not pumpkin we're tasting, it's the pumpkin pie spices, and they remain present here just like in any other "pumpkin beer", including "cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger".

What makes it work so well comes down to two things: the spicing is neither over nor under done, and the moderate Brettanomyces notes give it real character and an interesting tang. It's funky, but not too funky, and just spicy enough that it all works together really well. I'm actually a little surprised that a Belgian brewery hadn't already done something like this, but it's only here in America that we're obsessed with pumpkin pie spices!

Here are my initial notes: Clear, orange-gold body. Short white head. AVG retention/lacing. Aroma of apple cider funk, mild spice... mainly cinnamon. Flavor follows with sharp tartness followed by sweet malt. Quick and refreshing, it doesn't linger forever with built up spice. Mildly bitter. Light bodied. Moderate carbonation.

Not a fan of this one. The sourness in the beer just seemed to detract from any of the pumpkin notes. I think it is a nice change of pace from the rest of the pumpkin beers out there, but its not for me.

I don't know....this beer is weird....yet decent. I am not a fan of sour or pumpkin beers....but this cobo actually worked.....they both kind of cancelled the characteristics that I dislike in each to make it drinkable. However, 6oz was more than enough for me. The beer poured a nice amber color with white head that laced. The scent had sour and pumpkin....shocking....so did the taste which also had a subtle spice. Themouthfeel was lighter in body with decent carbonation. Overall....worth a try...yes....worth more than that....no.
