Pours a reddish brown color. Appears opaque but is clear when held to the light. Thin soda like tannish head dissipates leaving no residual head.

Smell is rather subdued - some oak, malts and dark bread.

Taste follows the nose - some mild bready malts, dark bread, touch of caramel, and a hint of wood. Not getting much of an oak aged flavor outside of some woody malt flavors. Everything is just so subdued - its mild to a fault.

Feel is smooth, light and easy drinking. Medium carbonation.

Overall merely an average scotch ale. Overall the smells/flavors are just far too subdued and superficial.

Poured into a Boulevard tulip glass.

Look: A glowing ruby-copper colored body; A cream colored head that recedes to leave a thick film. Random spots and vertical patches of lacing.

Aroma: Figs and raisins, sugared candies, and a certain peppermint aroma over oak wood.

Taste: What can be oak-aged tartness is perceived as holiday peppermint to me. Dark fruits add sweetness and there is a definite oak woodiness in here. But the taste is dominated by a mint taste that adds a nice seasonal touch.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied.

Overall: Thought I may not like this until I kept drinking it and understanding it's many parts that combine to make up a good holiday sipper.

Best by 3/14/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours auburn with ruby highlights; khaki head that fades leaving solid retention and okay lacing. Nice color. The aromas are somewhat faint. Malts are there with subtle hints of toffee. Caramel notes in the mix as well. A touch of cherry to round things off. The flavors are clean. More toffee and caramel. Malts are present. Some molasses. The oak/wood notes are very subtle and almost go unnoticed. Lots of black cherry in the finish. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is light with very active carbonation. I see some people saying it has no carbonation, but I feel like it's possibly over-carbonated, if anything.

It's not that this is a bad beer, because it's definitely not. There's just something that's not clicking with this one, in my opinion. This is the first Boulevard brew that I'm personally not crazy about, so it's all good.

Aroma is malts, caramel, fruit and a hint of oak. The flavor is caramel malts, oak, fruit/berries and a mix of warming alcohol and slight tartness in the finish.

a: its a murky ruby red color with some deep mahogany notes. 1/4 finger off-white head

s: molasses, leather, fig, plum, brown sugar, vanilla, a combination of dark and milk chocolate, and just a touch of berries

t: the molasses is waiting for you upfront, followed by oak, vanilla, plums, and just a hint of smoke. there is a dry cracker flavor in here as well. to be honest, the flavor is a little lighter than expected. there is something almost water-like in here

m: medium mouthfeel, but a little lighter than you'd expect from the style. carbonation level is normal

o: its one of those beers where the aroma is better than the flavor. not that the flavor is bad, but its just al little watery. it has the basic foundation, but just falls a bit short

A good example of a lower ABV scotch styled ale, it could use a little more caramel/sweetness and better mouth feel to push it over the edge into the excellent scotch ale category. If you are looking for a good winter session beer this is a good choice.
