Notes / Commercial Description:
Changeling is an enchanting blend of dark sour ales aged in whiskey and wine barrels that were inoculated with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus. It pours a deep ruby color with touches of gold at the edges of the glass. Leading with plum and toasty malt, the flavor transmutes into a soft tartness, with notes of earthy, funky Brett and a touch of lingering caramel to create a delicate balance.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/3/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/light copper/brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tart/sour cherry, raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, hay, straw, pepper, brown bread, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of vanilla, bourbon, cocoa, coffee, toffee, nuttiness, leather, musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and oak barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge tart/sour cherry, raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, hay, straw, pepper, brown bread, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of vanilla, bourbon, cocoa, coffee, toffee, nuttiness, leather, musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/sour cherry, dark fruits, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, hay, straw, pepper, brown bread, toasted oak, leather, musty funk, light cocoa/vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and oak barrel flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/spiciness and carbonation, increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy/acidic, and lightly sticky/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is an amazing blended dark sour/wild ale! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and oak barrel flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the balanced tart/lactic/spicy finish. Phenomenal Brett and Lacto complexity in great balance with the blend of base beers. Great bourbon/wine barrel presence. A highly delicious offering. Would love to age another and see how it develops in a year or two.

Poured a dark, burgundy color with a one-finger, khaki colored head of foam. It smelled of black cherry and some bourbon notes. Big tart bite at first sip. Not overpowering. Good dried dark fruit flavor.

I tried this beer at my old neighbor's house in the 'Wego. It poured a clear dark amber with thin white head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had tart hints. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with subtle tartness being present. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a new beer style, dark sour, for me and I thought it was decent.

Pours an orange-hued brown with a oinky of tan head. No head retention or lacing

S: Much sourness, a little red grape, raisins, a little grassyness

T: Jammyness, a little tartness & dryness, red grape skins up front. Oaky dryness, red grapes & tannins as this warms, slight figgyness& a touch of booze warmth, plus the sourness picks up. Finishes with red wine dryness/oakyness, a little kiss of vanilla & caramel & some sour apple shows late

MF: Medium body, delicate carbonation

Drinks pretty easy for the complexity, a very solid dark sour, a style I am starting to lose intesrest in, this may reverse the trend! The red grape component really works well in this one

L: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A nice aroma of malt, dark fruit, brettanomyces, and a funky quality.

T: Tasted of lot of dark fruit (plums, raisins), some of the aforementioned funky quality, a hint of malt, some light fruit notes (orange), caramel, and a definite sourness. An interesting flavor that has a darker quality than most wild ales, but still manages to be tasty. Oddly complex.

F: A lot of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: In general, this is a well made, likable beer. Very much a drinkable beer.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled 2/3/17, had 5/25/17.

Pours a dark purple/brown, opaque with a two inch foamy head and a good amount of soapy lacing. The smell is sour and tart- but not overly so, cherries, plums, toffee, malt, oak, light wine, light black pepper when warm. The taste has a decent amount of sourness and tartness up front, malt, plums, caramel, wine, oak, some brett, light cherries. A sweet note when warm, a light bitterness on the finish that lingers. Smooth, fairly creamy, well carbonated, a full body for the style.

Really good aroma, deep and expressive flavors. Don’t pick up the whiskey specifically, but a good amount of oak lets you know it’s in the mix. Very enjoyable, hope they blend this yearly. Well worth a purchase at a good price point.

Nice and funky with a lot of character from the wine barrels. To me this tastes like a wild Flanders Red with a hint of stout and whisky. I would not have guessed this is 83% Wee Heavy and over 50% whisky barrel aged.

750ml bottle into Duvel tulip. Best after bottle date: 03FEB2019.

A: Pours a deep caramel brown with a large and fluffy dark kahki head that slowly collapsed into a thick rocky film.
S: Musty and tart nose with notes dark fruits, caramel, whiskey and a kiss of bright acid. Tannic and dry smelling.
T: Follows the nose with notes of sweet plum and dark fruits followed by tart red berries, a hint of cherry, and mild acidity. I get hints of whiskey, vanilla, caramel, vinous red wine, and bitter citrus pith. The finish is drying and tannic, with a hint of cola, wood, and yeast lingering.
M: Medium body, clean mouthfeel from the light tartness and low sweetness. Carbonation is soft and easy on the palate. Tartness is low and easy. Tannic finish is dry and refreshing.
O: Very balanced and easy to drink. A bit toned down in flavor, but not a simple beer. Great balance without any one flavor profile dominating. A very approachable dark sour.

Deep brown with light amber highlights. There's a fingernail of beige around the rim and covering about half of the middle of the glass. A few minutes later there's no head at all. The aroma is of stone fruit, caramel, brettanomyces, and a hint of merlot. I'm tasting stone fruit, brettanomyces, and a splash of dark malt. The mouth is very carbonated and dry.
