Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Changeling is an enchanting blend of dark sour ales aged in whiskey and wine barrels that were inoculated with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus. It pours a deep ruby color with touches of gold at the edges of the glass. Leading with plum and toasty malt, the flavor transmutes into a soft tartness, with notes of earthy, funky Brett and a touch of lingering caramel to create a delicate balance.

The beer pours a cloudy dark brown with ample ruby red highlights. Generous portion of tan bubbles that fade to a raft and sticks to the glass handsomely.

This beer has a lot going on. Four people tasted, so I am putting cumulative comments here.

The aroma - subdued, but tons going on in the smell. There's plum, cherry, dark dried fruits (plums, raisins, figs), brown sugar, brown bread, mild spiciness, and a mild cider-like vinegar. And it doesn't end there - earthy funk, mild oakiness, some red wine character, and just a touch of bourbon/vanilla and even a bit of chocolate and coffee. It's pretty fine - all blended, nothing rough or sticking out.

The flavor just keeps coming on as well and you can find the aroma notes pretty well following in the taste. The beer is not overly tart, yet the tartness asserts itself quite easily. There's berry notes, dried dark fruit notes, definitely a vinegar note, some mild oakiness and bourbon character, earthiness, mild toasty malt, faint reminders of red wine. Minimal bitterness, and the sourness will not buckle your face - it's there, contributes to the overall depth of the beer, but doesn't linger.

Feel is medium on the carbonation and body. Smooth and clean, but not quite crisp - more substance than that. A little spicy tingle on the finish, no appreciable aftertaste.

This is a very nice, very tasteful beer. It is deep and well-developed, nothing out of place. For all that is going on, hard to believe one flavor doesn't become dominant. It is also surprisingly easy drinking and no hint of the 7.3% ABV other than a tiny bit of warmth. Outstanding brew, recommended.

Pours a deep amber with an ample tan cap. Good retention. Aroma is light - some loam from the Brett, a bland straw, dashes of caramel malt that fails to fully assert itself, noticeab lack of barrel characteristics.

Taste is more realized if not quite exceptional. Lots of dark, sour plum upfront (the most fleshed-out and successful element) with the Brett & wine barrel supporting. The tartness is balanced & folded-in nicely. The oaky wine must compliments the sweeter caramel malt. Some lacto sour at the end, but again, it is measured & not overwhelming. Didn't find any whiskey barrel notes but I wasn't missing its presence. All in all well-done sour, perhaps plays it too safe but certainly appreciate the restraint.

750 ML bottle, shared with brenn79. Aroma is super okay, dark fruit. Taste is sour (7/10), acidic, dark fruit, vinous, oak, vanilla, light caramel. A lot like a Flanders Red. Really good.

L: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A nice aroma of malt, dark fruit, brettanomyces, and a funky quality.

T: Tasted of lot of dark fruit (plums, raisins), some of the aforementioned funky quality, a hint of malt, some light fruit notes (orange), caramel, and a definite sourness. An interesting flavor that has a darker quality than most wild ales, but still manages to be tasty. Oddly complex.

F: A lot of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: In general, this is a well made, likable beer. Very much a drinkable beer.
