a lightly purple summery easy drinker, but not at all one of their best beers. for me, the berry complexion is sweet and sort of thin at the same time, more of a generic berry flavored popsicle or gum or something than any real mixed fruits. it would be almost impossible to say blackberry here or boysenberry over there, its not like that, but its hard to argue that it doesnt taste pretty good, sort of nonspecific as it is. the base beer is super light, light in flavor and body, which makes this really easy drinking when its ice cold, and lets the berries do the majority of the flavoring even though they arent super intense or anything. carbonation is high which is also nice and adds to the summery vibe. if i had to pick i would say blueberry is the most forward of the fruits, but its tough to say. a little thin in feel when it warms up, and not really all that beery as they go, but something fun for the warm weather and surprisingly not too sweet to drink several of them. i prefer their kolsch in this context though by a long shot...

Sweet, fruity and unapologetically jammy, Boulevard Brewing Company has us looking forward to warmer weather with a berry-centric ale with the impressions of all things summer.

Jam Band pours with a hazy mauve color, carrying a dense visual weight with a loose, pinkish, spongy froth. Rich fruit aromas strike the nose with the advertised cherry, blueberry and blackberry character with a pep of citrus and red wine. Sweet and pastry-like on the early palate, the taste takes the tongue on a trip from fruit smoothie to cobbler and yes... jam.

Little changes across the middle palate as the sweet fructose and candied malts lock into the tastebuds. The spice of pectins that pull from the fruit adds a tannin rich balance much in the same way that robust dark wines do. Macerated fruit seems concentrated and dense with its puree quality while the a mild acidity applies a tartness on the late palate. A citrusy bitterness plays out late with a peppery hop spice and a mild resinous character.

Medium bodied throughout, the beer seems heavier because of the lingering sweetness that saturates the tastebuds and brings quick fatigue on the palate. A light earthiness of date and fig eventually pull through while the ale finishes winey, peppery and truly jammy in a medium length aftertaste.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 3/8/2018. Pours fairly hazy ruby red/orange/pink/purple color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky light pink head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of juicy/lightly tart/tangy raspberry, blueberry, cherry, fruit skin, melon, citrus zest, red grape/wine, wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, light herbal/grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of berries, bready malts, and light fruity yeast/citrus hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big juicy/lightly tart/tangy raspberry, blueberry, cherry, fruit skin, melon, citrus zest, red grape/wine, wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, light herbal/grass, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, citrus peel bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of juicy raspberry, blueberry, cherry, fruit skin, melon, citrus zest, red grape/wine, wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, light herbal/grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of berries, bready malts, and light fruity yeast/citrus hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness and tart/tangy fruit balance; with zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and tart/tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, fairly acidic/tangy/tannic, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 5.9%. Overall this is an excellent fruit beer! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of berries, bready malts, and light fruity yeast/citrus hop flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink, with the mellowly tart/bitter/drying finish. Awesome jammy berry flavors with balanced bready malts. Not overly sweet. A very enjoyable offering and spot on style example. Exceptional levels of fruit presence.

On tap. Poured a purplish, red color with a small, pinkish head of foam. It smelled very fruity. I really picked out the raspberry and cherry. Sweet fruity flavor - lots of cherry, some raspberry. Nice tart finish.

Boulevard Brewing Co. " Jam Band"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "LO41618 13:45 13SEP2018 F" and sampled on 28JUL2018
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: "JAM BAND"... should I put on some Greatful Dead? The label reads "BERRY ALE WITH BLUEBERRY RED RASPBERRY AND CHERRY" - sounds great! It's poured a hazy ruby colored body beneath a creamy head of pink foam. The aroma is not as strong as I expected it to be but it's definitely like sweet fruity jam. On to the flavor... absolutely, it's like jam. I was wondering how the fruits would work out together. I can find the cherry fairly easily but the blueberry and raspberry are a little harder to pinpoint. Still, they're both there. It's really fantastic. It's sweetish but not too sweet, and I'll say it would certainly make a great dessert beer I think you could just as easily enjoy it by itself. How many in a row is up to you, but I think one might be my limit. If it were a little tarter maybe more, but it's not tart at all. I'm actually a little surprised, the label doesn't say anything about flavorings so it must be all fruit, so how did they do this? Ahhh, who cares, it's good. Medium bodied and smooth, it's quite easy to drink. And looking back it's left great lacing behind. I should have known that Boulevard would have been able to pull off one of the best fruit beers that I've had in a long while. Certainly worth trying for fans of the fruit.

From a can at the 2018 Decatur Beer Fest.
Pours with a clear reddish-brown body topped with very good white head. Excellent clarity.
Mild, lightly tart aroma.
The flavor is mildly bitter and fruity with just a hint of biscuits.
Medium body with medium carbonation.

Pours an effervescent purple with a pinky of pinkish head. Decent head retention & lacing

S: A little cherry, not much else

T: Tart raspberry, dryness, a little blueberry up front. More of the same as this warms, sweetness picks up a bit. Finishes with a little berry sweetess & dryness

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation

Drinks alright, but just not one I would buy again

Pours a cloudy maize color. 1/2 inch head of an off-pink color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of raspberry, cherry, sweet malt, slight pale malt, slight dough, and a hint of citrus hops. Fits the style of a Fruit/Vegetable Beer. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of raspberry, cherry, sweet malt, slight pale malt, slight dough, hint of alcohol, and a hint of citrus hops. Overall, good appearance, aroma, body, and blend.

12 oz. Can
Best By: 06/29/18

Poured into a Trillium glass a pretty nice dark reddish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy two-finger pink head, which also leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, kinda yeasty, with some blueberries, raspberries, cherries. The taste is pretty nice, malty, yeasty, with a nice touch of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, slight tart/sour. Medium body, ABV is hidden nicely. Overall, a tasty brew.

12oz can, served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark ruby red body, two finger light pink head, lots of lacing. fair retention. Smell is sweet maraschino cherry, a bit of lactose, touch of wheat and lemon. A bit of raspberry. Flavour is a bit of lactic acid, lemon, fair bit of berry sweetness and fruit, touch of lemon, wheat, cherry skin. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied, good carbonation, a bit of berry sweetness on the backend. Straight forward fruit beer, not too much sweetness or acidity, balanced.

L: Poured from a can to a pint glass. Had a dark red color and a very thick and cloudy consistency. There was a two inch, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A fair aroma of citrus, different types of berries, and wheat as well.

T: Tasted of a small amount of wheat (mostly in the finish), some light citrus notes (lemon, in particular), some berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries), and a slight earthiness. Not necessarily a bad flavor, but not quite as forceful as it should be. It's kind of a mushy mess, but it has its charms.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Definitely an uneven beer, but like all Boulevard products, it has some good qualities. Worth a look.
