Notes: Born a double-mashed imperial brown ale, then matured for 18 months in freshly emptied 10-year Canadian rye whisky barrels, this sturdy ale features checkered notes of rich vanilla, charred oak, warming whisky and spicy rye. With a lingering, boozy sweetness and round, resonant flavor, Plaid Habit clearly earns its name.

The clear mahogany colored beer pours out into a snifter glass with a 1/2” ivory head that recedes fairly soon to a thin irregular island of foam and a small ring around the glass while leaving very little lacing on the sides of the glass. At first, sipping creates scattered legs of lacing that cling to the sides of the glass. Eventually there’s no lacing or ring at all.

The aromas are rich and full. There’s some caramel, some brown sugar, some rye whiskey, some vanilla and a bit of oak.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose and fill the mouth and back of the palate. There’s the caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and oak along with the rye whisky all up front. The background has some toasted biscuity malt and a light spiciness along with some earthiness and a bit of char way in the background. There’s clearly some alcohol present.

The mouthfeel is on the full side of medium bodied and smooth with the gentle, finely bubbled persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness and the toasted biscuity malt begin to recede to a semi-dry, slightly bitter oak and light char tinged ending in which the alcohol is noticeable with a slight burn that emerges in the middle of the palate mid-way the finish though and moves to the back of the palate that is not unpleasant.

I definitely enjoyed this beer and intend to have another. The aroma/flavor profile is nicely complex Just the kind of beer to use as a digestif after a dinner with good friends or for sipping by the fire on a cold winter’s evening while reading a good book.

Pours a tawny brown with a thin lighter beige head that is gone quickly. The enticing sweeter aromas of blended Canadian whisky,a tinge of vanilla, and mild nuttiness linger.Love the flavor profile, vanilla sweetness, brown sugar, buttery toast, and nuttiness into the finish,I'am a Canadian whisky fiend so the big flavors are great to me.If you are into Canadian whisky you will really really like this like I did.

Great beer when savored at warmer temps.
Heavy oak, sweet-toffee, whiskey, sharp bitter finish.
Slow sipper.

Pours a translucent, but dark, burgundy with a finger of khaki foam. Head retention is good. Aroma is sweet, sugary notes - toffee, molasses, caramel, brandy, and dark fruits. After the sugary initial wave, there are hints of toasty, biscuity, bready malts. Flavor profile is caramel, toffee, molasses, burnt sugar, dark fruits and a little heat in a very brandy-esque profile. Toasted, caramel and bready malts add a little firmness to the flavor. It's nearly 14%, and while it may not come across that strong, it's apparent there is a significant amount of alcohol in each sip. Mouth feel is lightly velvety with a little spiraling effervescence on the tongue each sip. It has a medium-thick consistency. Overall, sugary, but balanced thanks to the heat.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 12oz bottle.

A very dark brown with a thin brown head that falls off rapidly leaving little lacing, this looks solid. The nose has dark brown sugar, molasses, booze, almond skins dark honey, a little toffee, some vanilla and a moderate oak and whiskey note. The palate opens bitter, boozy, moderately sweet with brown sugar, toffee, honey and a boozy tannic character. The mid palate, despite the strength of the booze flavor, does feel a little thin. The base beer makes this taste more rum like than whiskey. Carbonation is moderate. Drying, oaky, boozy and mildly tannic finish with lingering brown sugar and toffee bitterness. Solid.

Pours a flash of a fizzy head that fades instantly, no lacing but decent legs, hazy dark chestnut brown color with loads of sediment floaties

Nose brings loads of whiskey and barrel, tons of sweet whiskey, vanilla and buttery oak barrel, brown sugar and caramel, molasses, toasted brown malts, combined bring it a bourbon like character, pretty sweet in the aroma, candied malts and a little fig/raisin dark fruit but candied version

Taste more of the same loads of barrel juice, whiskey and buttery vanilla oak galore, barrel juice and some bourbon like qualities before it flashes into big maple syrup like flavors, sweet brown sugar, toffee, molasses, caramel, etc, lots of sweet candy characters, with mild raisin date fruits but again candied versions, some perfumey and hot alcohol, bordering fusel, touch of bitterness, lots of toasted brown malt flavors, sticky sweet finish, bit more perfumey alcohol lingering

Mouth is med to fuller bod, a touch syrupy, medium to lighter carb, hot warming alcohol but not too bad for almost 14%

Overall this was a big beer, a beast, and I'm glad it came in a small bottle rather than a 750ml, but it is tasty with lots of barrel and whiskey characters, alcohol hits a bit hot but it's almost 14% so that's expected, but all in all a tasty beer to have a small pour of

Bottled 10/9/19; drank 12/14/19 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small khaki head; frothy lace.

Brown sugar, cream, faint maple & sweet whiskey notes in the nose.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Oak, brown sugar, maple syrup & sweet bourbon flavors.

This was sticky & sweet; a bit over the top. Not one I'll track down again.

From a twelve ounce bottle, this brew is a dark and hazy brown...crimson highlights and some floaties. The head is slim, stable, and tan. Huge brown sugar and maple-like aroma...some wood and booze scents. Whiskey. The taste is sweet....really sweet. Sugar. There is a warmth and alcohol in the midtaste. Flavorful and intense. It would be hard to have many of these. Complex, interesting, and enjoyable on a cold night.

Boulevard Brewing Co. "Plaid Habit"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST BY... 05OCT2019" and sampled on 13FEB2019
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Look: A hazy reddish chestnut brown is topped by a creamy head of yellowed sand colored foam.

Smell: Boozy, sweet caramelish malt, brown sugar, whiskey, woody oak, fried bread, and vanilla.

Taste: Fuller and richer than the aroma lets on with additional notes of sweet bread, maple syrup, toffee, fudge, light spice (perhaps from the alcohol), and subtle raisin. It's sweet but due to the median bitterness that's there, the oaky dryness, and the spiciness it finishes dry enough.

Feel: Medium-full in body and remarkably smooth.

Overall: A great winter weather beer although I could see having it at any time on relaxing evening.

12oz bottle. Label has enjoy by date as '09OCT2020'.
Amber brown colored body. Partial off white head with the pour. Leaves some oily sheen with each sip.
Aroma is heavy with the rye whiskey barrel (spicy rye, oak,and vanilla).
Taste has a Canadian whiskey flavor, with lots of vanilla, oak, and spicy rye from the barrel. After taste is brief, and ends with the oaky vanilla.
Medium mouth feel, with lots of aromatics in the nose. Okay carbonation.
A well constructed higher ABV% ale with kudos to the depth of the barrel.

The run on bourbon barrels must be getting scarce. That's the only explanation that's remotely reasonable for turning to Canadian whisky barrels for the Boulevard brewery to lay down their recklessly strong brown ale inside.

Running well into imperial status, Plaid Habit pours a rich amber color and a shade shy of the promised brown color. Hazy and frothy, the rich ale strikes the nose with toffee, toast, pecan and nearly shuttering alcohol spice. Lush sweetness splashes against the tongue with the full brunt of caramel, toffee, simple syrup and honey for a full on malt display.

As the sweetness slathers the middle palate, the beer tastes more like a big amber ale with the strong suggestion of bread crust, candied pecan, light butterscotch and continuing effort of savory sweetness. Lacking the chocolate or coffee notes of classic brown ale, the beer soon balances with the simmering heat of whisky spice and oak.

Full and cloying, the beer's spice isn't enough to take the edge off of the near sickly sweet and simplistic malt profile. Yet finishing fusel, medicinal and sharply spicy, the beer's long combination of sweet and heat makes it a chore to finish.

Pours an effervescent & chestnut hued brown with one finger of mocha colored head. Viscious, slight head retention & lacing

S: Brown sugar, peat, caramel & Whisky once warm

T: Follows the nose, some caramel and barrel dryness up front. Rich brown sugar sweetness, dryness, barrel burn on a fractional scale & caramel as this warms. Finishes sweet, dry with brown sugar & Whisky notes

MF: Medium body, subtel carbonation

Drinks easy for what it is, ABV is well disquised. This is well worth picking up

On tap. Poured a semi-opaque, brown color with golden highlights and a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It smelled of bourbon, oak, smoke, peat and toffee. Sweet maltiness, peat, smoke, bourbon and vanilla. So amazingly good.
