Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Saison-Brett, based on our very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into a Three Notch'd tulip. 2014 vintage. Best By 02-2016 on back label. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Opaque golden with solid 1-2 eggshell, frothy head with good retention and nice rings of lacing.

S: The maltiness of Tank 7 is there but accented strongly with earthy Brett aroma. The citrus lemon component is refreshing along with the grassy hops character.

T: The flavor is malt but is bereft of mild light fruity sweetness that I think is important to this style, but the rest of the flavor is on target from the earthy notes from the Brett, which are thankfully light but work well in this strong malty type of beer. The grassy, herbal, lemon citrus hoppiness is a wonderful counterpoint.

M: Mouth-filling and caressing with light-medium carbonation and light-medium body.

O: I liked Saison-Brett but I like Tank 7 a lot better for it's more rounded nature. This is a good beer and one of the best Brett-character beers I have had. It comes off to me like a brighter Orval in many ways. I enjoyed it but there are saisons I like a lot better -- including the base beer.

The appearance is beautiful, it's impossible to not get a huge white frothy head on this one, which leaves behind plenty of foamy lacing. The color is a pale, hazy yellow-orange. It smells like funky mango and ripe peaches. Very earthy as well. Lots of floral notes, honeysuckle in particular. The taste follows with more tartness in the mango and more peachiness. There is honeysuckle again, but also clover honey and peach blossom honey. It has plenty of carbonation and a creamy, medium body.

From a guy who doesn't like saisons too much, I'm really in love with this. The Brett is there and it really makes this beer shine. A must try beer for anyone. At all. Ever.

A: Lemon gold with a slight haze, tons of carbonation, huge 5 finger off white head. Huge chunky foamy lacing.

S: Belgian yeasts, lemon peel, coriander, funk that’s almost like fresh paint, light green herbs.

T: Sweet, lemony, Belgian yeasts, light sourness, light green herbs, sage, tarragon. Light bitterness on the end.

M: Syrupy body, medium low carbonation.

O: Really good beer. Well balanced, great look and taste.
