Notes / Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

"Please allow me to introduce myself..."

Deep ruby-brown, with a tidy head - looks pretty great in my Smokestack Tulip.

Boozy, with brown sugar, molasses, blackberries. Fills the nose like if you were walking into a professional kitchen with all the smells.

Boozy here too, but not to be imposing, hiding the ABV really well (and will probably hurt tomorrow) with no burn - currants, blackberries, whiskey, tobacco. If an upscale men's clothing store bottled a beer, this could be it.

Silky like creme brulee - just rolls across the tongue as if the two were one.

Probably not my favorite beer simply because it's not my favorite style, but no doubt one of the best I've ever had - wonderfully done.

Poured from a 12oz. glass into a chalice.

A - Poured a semi-transparent golden-brown, with a thick, nearly three-finger head.

S - Berries, kiwis, and a little booze.

T - Oh wow, the booze! Tart fruitiness quickly gets overtaken by an aggressive booziness. It sits like hops in an IPA - it permeates the entire flavor. The tartness fades as the malt sets in, and fades into a nice residual sweetness.

M - Very satisfying thickness. Just a little bit of fizziness, but mostly full, thick body.

O - It would be nice to have a little bit less boozy flavor (although it fades a bit as the beer warms up) to taste all the other nice things happening, but otherwise a great beer!

Sampled this evening on 3/23/15 but had this before on tap down in Kansas City at Jack Stack's BBQ restaurant about 3.5 years ago. Comes in a single large bottle with a cork or in a 12 ounce bottle (as this one) and usually is seen in a 4-pack for around $10.00. Best by date of : "12/30/15". Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a vintage 'Boulevard" tulip glass.

Brew pours a pretty hazy amber in color with a good 3+-finger foamy off-white head. A good amount of lacing is seen when sipped that sticks to the sides of the glass. Lots going on with the aroma as there is burnt brown sugar, spices (cloves and pepper?) with some dark fruit overtones. More going on with the taste as the cloves and spices are right up front along with the brunt brown sugar sweetness with a hint of caramel and yeast in the mix along with some plums/raisins and really not as sweet as you might think. Actually finishes pretty smooth without tasting the alcohol, though you know it is in there. No bitter or harsh aftertaste at all. Medium-bodied with good carbonation. Overall, you won't get to 'the sixth glass' as you would be pretty well blitzed by then I would think. Overall a tasty brew.
