Notes / Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

12oz bottle. Reddish orange in color with fine sediment in suspension. Large, pillowy head of foam that lasts forever. Aroma of dark fruit and alcohol that combine into a bubblegum note at first, then notes of candy apple, pear, and raisin take over. Some aspirin bottle yeast character and a bit of rum.

Robustly malty and fruity with a restrained sweetness. It's immediately apparent that this can stand toe to toe with the top Belgian quads. Lots of toffee malt spiked with candi sugar. Just a hint of alcohol on the finish. Well-carbonated but not harsh. A bit of a syrupy/sticky finish.

Awesome quad at an awesome price point. Boulevard makes awesome Belgian-style beers -- it's easy to see why Duvel Moortgat bought them up.

Pours a nicely clouded coppery orange. Decent head of light tan foam. Fabulous retention, barely dropping though it did chunk up a bit.
Smell is rich, oaky, malt, tart, slightly musty. Great balance.
Taste is malty, tart, oak, rum, light citrus. Wow, just wow.
Medium bodied with a forward, almost pushy effervescence. Warming from the get-go. Dry finish brings out a slightly harsh astringency but it isn't offputting. Wish I had more.
