Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.

A - Two fingers worth of froth white head which displays excellent retention... A dark rich golden color... A moderate bit of carbonation rises throughout...

S - The hops shine... A wonderful mix of citrus to start... Grapefruit... Orange zest... Tangerines... There is a hint of piney earthiness mixed in as well... There are some apricot notes on the nose as well... The malt base is present, but takes a back seat and allows the hoppiness to sparkle...

T - The hops are at the forefront and are mostly citrusy with a kiss of piney... They sit atop a rock solid malt base that is dominated by caramel, toasted malts, and rich bread crust... Straight forward and rather effective...

M - On the fuller side of medium bodied... Crisp... Clean... Refreshing... Moderate carbonation... Sleek to start... A bit chalky and dry to finish...

D - A very nice well balanced American Double IPA... Lots of redeeming characteristics that make this one solidly better than good, but not quite very good...

750mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 8.99. Best by 03/2013. Served in a Dogfish Head pint glass.

Pours red with three fingers faded yellow head. A good amount of lacing.

Smells of sweet pine, citrus, sugar, biscuits and fresh cut grass.

Nice mix of flavors including orange, pine, lemon rind, biscuity sweet malt and spice with a hint of booze.

Medium thick body with fairly mild carbonation. Long citrus hoppy aftertaste.

A nicely balanced double IPA. Sweet n hoppy. I'll definately be picking up more. If this is representative of the quality that Boulevard puts out I'm going to enjoy the fact they're available in Georgia now.

Thanks to dujayhawk for this one. Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into pint glass (primarily because I failed to read the directions...oops).

A: Hazy, translucent ruddy amber, with a one and a half finger white head and great visible carbonation.

S: Seems diminished overall - kind of weak. But what is there is sweet caramel malt, citrus/orange hops. I'm going to bump up the score a half point from what it would have been, as I suspect the overall impact of the aroma would have been enhanced if I used a snifter as the bottle label requested.

T: Starts with caramel and toffee malty sweetness with some citrus hops, then fades into a nice pine bitterness, and the hang is citrus pith & caramel sweetness. Very well balanced on the tongue.

M: Fairly highly carbonated, medium mouthfeel. Pronounced alcohol presence but stops just short of detracting.

O: A good beer that toes the line between DIPA and barleywine. I'm a little sad I didn't pour it into the appropriate glassware. Recommended to try, but I don't think I'll actively search another one out.

12oz bottle, best by March 20, 2013. Served at around 40F.

Pours semi hazy orange/amber/copper with a large three finger light beige head that leaves rings of lacing and holds a persistent cap. Tons of very active carbonation bubbles flying all around inside the glass.

Aroma features citrus, apricot, a bit of pine, bread and caramel malt. Moderate to good strength.

Flavor is nice grapefruit citrus, orange, fruity hops, some apricot, pine, caramel malt in the middle offering some sweetness, good bitterness on the finish but not an enamel-scraper. Mild alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, with high carbonation.

A - Beautiful dark bone white head with nice retention and great lace. Dark, hazy amber ice tea body.

S - Herbal hops layered with a light, white grape-like tangy sweetness. Nice integration.

T - Bright herbal hops right up front with a beautiful counterbalance of crisp malt sweetness. The bitterness expands through a lightly acidic center, before reaching out to smack you in the face through the finish.

M - Medium/full body with nice carbonation.

O - A bright and lively DIPA; a refreshing change from the thicker, sweeter standards of the style.
