Rye On Rye MapleRye On Rye Maple
Notes: Aged to perfection, this newest iteration of Rye on Rye is bold and complex, with aromas of maple syrup, caramel, butterscotch, hazelnut and oaky vanilla that emanate from the glass. The finish on each sip is deceptively smooth for a beer with these epic levels of robust booze character.

this is a lot, really sweet and boozy, and not necessarily maple driven despite that, the sugar throughout this almost covers up what makes the base beer so special, which is all the earthy and spicy rye character, not that it isnt present still, but it seems almost glazed over, not quite retaining its impressive original identity, and i am glad i only had a small one, i could not drink a full pour of this i dont think. looks like butterscotch in the glass, smells like candy, maple sure, but also brown sugar, raisin, toffee, honey, all the sticky sweet stuff at one, even a baked thing from the grain, less of the peppery rye i like in the original, and lots of barrel too, which is where i get most of the rye from it seems. hints of vanilla and white chocolate too, very desserty, very alcoholic. the flavor is all sort of smeared together for me, the maple is somewhat light, the malt is kind of generic, and it just seems like a big bruising strong ale, booze everywhere, tons of residual sugar, not as much nuance as i expected and definitely not obviously maple, at least to me, its like caramel and toffee and sweet malt more than anything else. its got light carbonation and feels really heavy overall, sticks to the teeth, just isnt quite what i was hoping for. as a paler barrel aged strong ale its quite good, but as an expression of rye and maple, i think it leaves a little something to be desired. still, cool to find this on tap in boise, i have not seen a lot of boulevard around the bars here at all...

October 2020 Review
12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Pour: rich amber color, Not see through but fairly clear. one finger white head. Fair amount of lacing, lots of clouds. Nice to look at. 3.75

Nose: rye, hints of oak and maple 3.75

Taste: big maple sweetness upfront but not cloying. Oak, rye spice, rich roasted malt, as others have said, some sort of weird banana, maybe just maple, thing. Caramel, stone fruit. Enjoyable and easy drinking. 3.75

Feel: super smooth, low carbonation, rich, almost, but not quite, sticky. Really nice. 4.0

Overall: good. It maybe not great. I like CBS better but this is very similar. Worth a try as long as you like an upfront maple sweetness. Have another to enjoy soon and a couple to age. 3.75

12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 3/16/20, had 8/26/20.

Pours a reddish copper color, mostly clear, with a half inch head and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of caramel, a flash of banana at the open, rye, rye whiskey, vanilla, some oak and malt, light maple, light char when warmed. Has a somewhat spicy aroma. The rye whiskey steps to the front in the flavor, then rye, caramel, vanilla, malt, some maple- a little more as it warms, some oak and yeah there is some banana. Has a somewhat spicy flavor. Smooth, a solid medium to full body, well carbonated.

The maple is light but fairly effective. A solid as always base, with excellent barrels, lots of rye and a terrific overall flavor. That banana thing is weird, but not bad. Very enjoyable and well worth a purchase.

Opaque chestnut brown with a tan cap, lazy lacing. Bourbon soaked maple, rye, oak, molasses, caramel, vanillins, dark fruit and cool earth in the nose. This is the best tasting rye beer I have had since some of revolution's stuff, incredible version of the nose into taste, maple is deep without becoming sugary, barrel is well matched- bourbon is warm, lends molasses and oak vanillins a plenty. Rye, dark fruit, caramel, and a kiss of fall leafiness on the finish. Feel is where I wish it had a touch more to offer, sure it is warm, chewy and verging toward viscous, but a little more heft and rye texture would take the body from good to amazing. Still, this is a wonderful beer, will be saving a bottle for a cool autumn evening. The wife loved it

Poured from a bottle into a snifter

Appearance – The beer pours a clear deep copper color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head fades very quickly leaving tiny bits of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. The thickness and stickiness of the brew can be seen when swirling in the glass. Upon swirling, thick sticky fingers of the beer cling to the side of the glass, very slowly sinking back to the bottom of the snifter, leaving streaks down the walls of the vessel.

Smell – The aroma of the brew is quite robust consisting of a very strong aroma of rye bread and a huge showing of bourbon. The bourbon brings with it large amounts of oak, some char, and an intoxicatingly warming aroma. Along with these smells is a good level of caramel sweetness as well as some aromas of cherry, plum and raisin. A touch of leather and smoke are there as well, creating a very intoxicating but inviting and intriguing smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet bready taste that has a bit of rye. The sweet is heavy of a caramel, toffee and molasses mixed with some cherry and plum. While the rye is rather modest upfront, it gets stronger as the taste advances all while the sweetness fades a tad. At the same time the somewhat modest bourbon flavor that was present at the start, gets strong, building in strength toward the middle of the taste profile. Along with the bourbon comes some flavors of a light char and some very light earthy and herbal hop. The bourbon flavor gets stronger and stronger, being accompanied by more and more warming booziness as the taste moves on. With the big increase in bourbon and booziness, as well as the maintenance of the rye and sweet, one is left with a very robust and warming taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is very thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is rather low. For the sweet and rye the thick body is fantastic, while the lower carbonation level is perfect for the bourbon and boozy tastes. Overall, the feel makes it a nice slow sipper as, at 13 %, it should be.

Overall – A fantastic drinker with tons of flavor, great smoothness, and a good alcohol punch. As a fan of rye whisky, this is one nice brew and one I will certainly stockpile for the occasion sip on from time to time.

Picked up a single from Kings Beer & Wine 5-21-20 for $4.69. Best by 16MAR2021, consumed 8-7-20.

Beer poured a reddish brown with a nice off white head with the original pour.

Nose is a nice blend of the rye barrel with a nice blending touch of maple sweetness.

Taste is a huge malt base that takes in the barrel which then is joined by a decent dose of maple. Finishes with maple sweetness and a nice offsetting rye balancing. Heat is present with each sip.

Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied and very smooth.

Overall another nice brew at a nice price from the Boulevard barrel program!

It’s an okay beer. The flavors are all there - the rye whiskey and maple definitely stand out - but they don’t seem to be working together well. They seem more like they are independent flavors put into the same beer somehow.
This beer definitely gives a bit of a kick with the abv.

L: brown with some reddish hues; thin tan head
S: rich & sweet; caramel, oak, maple, vanilla, rye whiskey, toffee
T: spicy rye, boozy rye whiskey, maple, toffee, caramel, oak, vanilla, earthy hops
F: full body, prickly alcohol, lower carbonation, sweeter finish with a burn
O: I like the maple addition to this one of a kind rye wine.

Pours a really nice reddish copper color with a short tan head. Really nice looking beer.

I can really smell the rye in here, along with maple syrup and some brown sugar.

The maple syrup is very up front with this one, but not in a dominating way. Very quickly other flavors enter, mainly rye and brown sugar and a hint of whiskey. Quite a bit of heat at the finish, which is to be expected.

Feels thicker than I would have guessed, warms the tongue and back of the throat, leaves a little lingering spicy heat.

I liked this one, everything is well balanced, not too sweet, not to boozy. Most beers in this alcohol range get too boozy for me the more I drink it, this one rides a fine line between sweet and booze, and there is enough complexity to keep things interesting. This is a bit of an unusual beer, but one I am glad I took a chance on.

Coppery amber color with a nice pour from a bottle, leaving a one finger head that dissipates quickly. This is remarkably smooth and not boozy for a high ABV beer. It is a little sweet to my taste, making me want to try the rye on rye on rye on rye, but it is a delicious and impactful imperial stout that doesn’t stay overly sweet in its finish.

12oz bottle ENJOY BY 16MAR2021 poured into a Boulevard tulip glass at fridge temp 13.2% ABV 16 IBU. The beer pours bright light slightly opaque medium amber with khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles on the surface. Minimal lacing. The aroma is sweet maple overshadowing some spicy rye whiskey barrel and rye malt. The taste is sweet maple up front with rye whiskey, oak, vanilla, marshmallow and rye malt all getting their shots in before a lightly bittered finish. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with a little less than medium carbonation and an undry finish. Not cloying to my taste, but like one sibling hovering a finger over the other saying "I'm not touching you" close to it. Overall, good. Honestly, I enjoy the tick, I'm glad they tried something new (for this series), but I'm glad I didn’t grab the four pack. I may buy another single to sample next March.

Bottle from Market of Choice.

A dark brown with reddish brown highlights, this beer is capped with a beige head with good retention and excellent lacing. The nose is really, really impressive, remarkably well integrated. Maple sweetness layered on grainy, spicy rye with a nice blend of vanilla and brown sugar. A light biscuit/cereal note as well. Honey, a little caramel.

The palate opens with a pleasant maple flavor, prominent and with nice depth. This is followed by vanilla, caramel, dark honey, a little wood and oak. Very nice grainy rye notes, mildly spicy and earthy. Nice heat, nice booze notes. The mouthfeel is a lot Fuller than I remember the Rye on Rye being, with creamy maple, vanilla and booze. While boozy, this doesn't feel like a 13+% beer. Full in body creamy on the palate with lingering vanilla and maple as well as rye. Quite excellent.

This just showed up here & they may as well have put my picture on the label. Rye. Rye barrel. Bloody maple syrup? Laptop rising slowly. 12 oz. bottle.

The pour is a lovely coppery amber, opaque except around the edges. The nose whispers promises of syrup, caramel, & rye whiskey. I listen.

Rye on Rye Maple was conceived, I believe, by a maxium 6, an individual of penetrating discernment. The dance of spicy rye, rye whiskey, caramel, toffee, maple syrup (probably the delicious Wesley’s) is choreographed beautifully – all balanced on the edge of a Karambit Knife. Peppery. Boozy but light, which is…unusual. So drinkable. But check out the ABV on this babe.

Via the name I was hoping for angels singing & one more season of Justified, but instead it was ‘only’ Conor Mason & the extension of Ozark. I can live with that. And by ‘live with that’ I mean happily finish this excellent beer. And find more.

Enjoy by 3/16/21. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours copper with ruby hues; small light khaki head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of caramel along with some dark fruits. Subtle bourbon aromas. Lots of malts. The flavors are bold. Lots of caramel along with some toffee and vanilla. Some banana and raisins in the mix. The maple comes through without completely dominating. The bourbon comes through and accentuates everything else that's going on. The rye really comes through giving it a subtle spiciness. Some black pepper in the mix. There's a sweetness to this one, but it's not cloyingly sweet or anything like that. Finishes with an enjoyable warmth, but it's not hot or boozy. Mouthfeel is nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy and smooth. This one is ultimately dangerously drinkable.

This is a really nice barrel-aged beer. It's bold, but ultimately balanced and not over the top. This might not be my new personal favorite barrel-aged beer from Boulevard since they have so many good ones, but it's still really good. Boulevard always does a great job with their barrel-aged brews and this one is no exception. It's enjoyable and fun to drink. I really like it. Well done.

Maybe I am desensitized but I could not taste much banana flavor mostly in this beer you get a pretty good bourbon presence a nice bit of vanilla sweetness and just a little touch of spicy rye balancing the hop profile that hides the ABV very well. It is quite a smooth beer the bourbon takes a backseat and the ethanol notes are very minimal. Overall I'm glad that I have three more they will be quite easy to finish.

Poured into tulip, finger’s worth of creamy-white head. Laces nicely with each sip. Semi-opaque with an Amber hue to boot, a really pretty beer.

Banana and maple scents on top of faint bourbon and vanilla which carry over nicely into a lush, warming and full palette of French toast and cinnamon, banana bread, boozy on the out set.

Great beer, may be my new workhorse go-to when the dark mood strikes

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this already, this bottle 3 gone from this 4 pack. You can bet your ass I will buy more!

Pours an effervescent chestnut with a little mahogany with 2 fingers of sand colored head. Traces of head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit, a touch of booze as this warms

T: Brown bread, raisins, figs, spicy & a little boozey rye, dryness up front. Maple dryness & sweetness as this warms, some figs & a little peppery rye as well. Finishes dry with plenty of maple dryness & sweetness, a little caramel, figs & a kiss of leafy hops; just a kiss of Rye Whiskey boozeyness & spicyness

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, thickens up as it warms, nice boozey warmth as well

Another high ABV winner from these guys. Never gets too hot. The nose & appearance could be better

2020 vintage

Mmmmm, rye was calling my name. Love the good spice of rye whiskey, and maple can only make it better right??

Pours a deep amber/ brown with a finger of bubbly tan-ish head that fades fast and leaves no lacing

Oh boy is that sweet. Rich nutty caramel, chocolate covered dark fruits, islay scotch, with just a hint of maple sweetness. No real spice character, but holy shit, a perfect aroma

Absolutely decadent taste here, I've never really had something compare to this as far as being sweet without being cloying. It pushes the absolute limit with persistent malt and chewy toffee through the front end of the sip. The dark fruits come out mid palate before finishing with a rye character that isn't overbearing and is balanced out by authentic maple, very rich

Obviously full bodied, this is a heavy drink and a slow sipper for sure. Not too much in the way of carbonation, and while that isn't necessarily bad, that's one of the only faults I find here. A very smooth finish with some nice alcohol tingle

Good lord I am blown away by this! I'm relatively new to this, but I imagine it will be very hard for much to top this. Perfect in aroma and almost perfect in taste too, this is very special stuff. Complex and heavy but sweet at the same time, I will be picking up more of this

12 oz bottle, best by Mar 2021.
Boiler snifter.

Pours a beautiful scarlet caramel color with a thin fingernail of head.

This is the Rye On Rye we all know. The nose opens up with succulent caramel topping, toffee bits, rye whiskey, and sweet scotch. I do get a fair more bit of sweetness on the nose in this version but nothing specifically maple-ish.

Flavor starts out with dusty oak barrel, followed by caramel/toffee, herbal hops (a first for this series), printer paper, slight cocoa, and scotch-y sweetness. Remaining flavors on the palate are dry whiskey, slight dead grass, and brown sugar.

Feel is hot and burning, with lots of carbonation and heavy alcohol. Medium heft. A hot, dry finish.

Overall, a fair to decent version of Rye On Rye. I personally preferred last year's Rye 6, but maybe this one will settle in with time.

I only got a slight nose from a snifter and that was of maple. It poured a dark opaque amber. The first sip was a boozy rye flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy. I would like to have tasted other flavors from this Templeton Rye barrel-aged brew the way I have from other brewers' Templeton Rye barrel-ageds, but not everything balances. Smooth finish though, if a little hot on the throat.
