Aged to perfection, this newest iteration of Rye on Rye is bold and complex, with aromas of maple syrup, caramel, butterscotch, hazelnut and oaky vanilla that emanate from the glass. The finish on each sip is deceptively smooth for a beer with these epic levels of robust booze character.

32oz crowler from CopenRoss. Dark, cloudy amber, a few fine bubbles. Sweet malty aroma, maple, boozy. Taste is sweet, more maple, brown sugar, and boozy warmth. Sipper.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a clear brown with a one-finger foamy off-white head that reduces to a film on top

S- caramel, toffee and butterscotch up front, along with some spicy and peppery rye, oak and some maple to close it out

T- sweet maple is first noticeable, followed by a spicy and peppery hit of rye. Mid-palate gives sweet malty notes of caramel and toffee, before finishing with oak and more peppery rye, which lingers with maple long after the finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns into a slightly creamy, warming finish

O- the maple sweetness works well with the spicy rye, solid

Fantastic 12oz bottle poured into my HotD snifter. Pours out a medium-dark amber with mild haze and a small fizzy off-khaki head. The nose is full of moderately boozy whiskey and a foundational sweetness, reminiscent of maple syrup or molasses. The palate unfolds with that whiskey presence meshing very well with solid dose of caramel and toffee notes, maple-y sweetness, slight rye spice, a nice dose of earthy cocoa, and some dark fruitiness. Not boozy per-se, but still some latent heat here, perfect sipping night-cap for me. Beautiful all-around strong ale, though not as much Rye presence as I had thought I would find.

BOULEVARD RYE ON RYE MAPLE (2020)

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip.

a: Clear copper with an inch thick fine tan head which receded to thick surface foam and patchy lacing.

s: Whiskey and slight maple syrup.

t: Follows the nose in a great combination, moderate hop bite and significant throat burn. Sweet finish.

m: Medium, good body and some carbonation tingle.

o: A worthy competitor to Founders' iconic CBS, but without the coffee. Also a high ABV champ now that Founders has discontinued DKML. Just a great brew. I was blown away by their new "Plaid Habit. This may beat even that.

this is a lot, really sweet and boozy, and not necessarily maple driven despite that, the sugar throughout this almost covers up what makes the base beer so special, which is all the earthy and spicy rye character, not that it isnt present still, but it seems almost glazed over, not quite retaining its impressive original identity, and i am glad i only had a small one, i could not drink a full pour of this i dont think. looks like butterscotch in the glass, smells like candy, maple sure, but also brown sugar, raisin, toffee, honey, all the sticky sweet stuff at one, even a baked thing from the grain, less of the peppery rye i like in the original, and lots of barrel too, which is where i get most of the rye from it seems. hints of vanilla and white chocolate too, very desserty, very alcoholic. the flavor is all sort of smeared together for me, the maple is somewhat light, the malt is kind of generic, and it just seems like a big bruising strong ale, booze everywhere, tons of residual sugar, not as much nuance as i expected and definitely not obviously maple, at least to me, its like caramel and toffee and sweet malt more than anything else. its got light carbonation and feels really heavy overall, sticks to the teeth, just isnt quite what i was hoping for. as a paler barrel aged strong ale its quite good, but as an expression of rye and maple, i think it leaves a little something to be desired. still, cool to find this on tap in boise, i have not seen a lot of boulevard around the bars here at all...

October 2020 Review
12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Pour: rich amber color, Not see through but fairly clear. one finger white head. Fair amount of lacing, lots of clouds. Nice to look at. 3.75

Nose: rye, hints of oak and maple 3.75

Taste: big maple sweetness upfront but not cloying. Oak, rye spice, rich roasted malt, as others have said, some sort of weird banana, maybe just maple, thing. Caramel, stone fruit. Enjoyable and easy drinking. 3.75

Feel: super smooth, low carbonation, rich, almost, but not quite, sticky. Really nice. 4.0

Overall: good. It maybe not great. I like CBS better but this is very similar. Worth a try as long as you like an upfront maple sweetness. Have another to enjoy soon and a couple to age. 3.75

12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 3/16/20, had 8/26/20.

Pours a reddish copper color, mostly clear, with a half inch head and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of caramel, a flash of banana at the open, rye, rye whiskey, vanilla, some oak and malt, light maple, light char when warmed. Has a somewhat spicy aroma. The rye whiskey steps to the front in the flavor, then rye, caramel, vanilla, malt, some maple- a little more as it warms, some oak and yeah there is some banana. Has a somewhat spicy flavor. Smooth, a solid medium to full body, well carbonated.

The maple is light but fairly effective. A solid as always base, with excellent barrels, lots of rye and a terrific overall flavor. That banana thing is weird, but not bad. Very enjoyable and well worth a purchase.
