Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours a beautiful golden yellow with good carbonation. Nose is fairly subdued. I'm getting earthy tones and some nice funk. Smells smooth. Taste follows the nose. Earthy, wheat, bread, a faint touch of citrus peel. Overall it's really smooth and balanced. Mouthfeel is nice.

L: Comes in a clear gold color that becomes immensely hazy, almost opaque, once the yeast is added. The head is huge, frothy, creamy white and lasting. Retention is almost perfect; eventually subsiding somewhat, but leaving a big white bubbly pillow. Lacing is left in sheets, of course, as is expected. Marvelous looking beer.

S: Lots of sweet, overripe banana; more like Runt's banana candy than actual banana. Some clove and peppery spice. Big biscuity malt backbone. Vanilla creaminess, and a cantaloupe and honeydew melon fruit presence that freshens it up and livens it out, along with touches of orange and grapefruit; and a slight oakiness.

T: Huge cantaloupe and honeydew melon upfront, along with touches of green and white grapes, and passion fruit. The banana candy is there to sweeten things but its a bit more in the background than the aroma. There's a touch of sugar-coated, candied orange and grapefruit peel. There's a big crackery and biscuit malt presence, but it's hardly sweet at all. It's more like a pillowy, doughy sensation. Just a touch of warmth going down, but alcohol is very well hidden. Finishes quite dry--but not bone dry thanks to the fruity flavors. There's some pink bubblegum, and then ends with an herbal note (sort of like either cilantro or rosemary; will update if I find out) and then a whole mess of clove.

F: Medium-full, well-carbonated, smooth and slick across the palate, and lightly creamy. The finish is dry, and between the dryness and carbonation this is stupidly easy to drink.

O: Wow. Is this the best American traditional-style saison? I don't know, but it is fantastic. This is a wonderful beer.

Cloudy and unfiltered looking, but nice carbonation and head. Strong citrus aroma that's pleasant and inviting. A slight bitterness in the taste with the citrus of lemon which I like. The carbonation is a bit high for my taste but adds character to the beer. The overall beer is very good and at 8.5% ABV it's not alcoholic much at all. I'd buy this one again.

Pours a light gold with high carnonation. The nucleation point in my chimay goblet had a work out. Aroma is hearty with some fruit and spice. Taste is complex, with a balance of some subtle bubblegum and spicy yeast flavors covering a crisp malt presence with some new world hops. My bottle was a couple weeks past the best by date so the hope may have faded a bit and the yeast was dominant without taking away from drinkability. Some booze was there but not a hindrance. A well balanced beer.

poured a beautiful golden straw with a mt Fuji-style head that overfloweth my glass...a subtle sweetness in the nose, so faint through the fluffy head! it's floral and fruity, with a grapey side and superb carbonation and it's just perfect.

L - Golden with a rocky, three finger head replenished by ample carbonation leaving plenty of lacing
S - Earthy sweetness with a faint hop note as it warms
T - Straight forward malt followed by bitterness followed by some spiciness at the end but light on the esters
F - Substantial feeling with the carbonation expanding and smoothing it out
O - Personalized interpretation that works but trying too hard to be different
