Tank 7 Farmhouse AleTank 7 Farmhouse Ale

Brewed by:
Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

This brew pours a cloudy orange with a fluffy two finger head and lots of lacing. The head sticks around for a long time.
The smell is sweet, (bubble gum), fruity and floral. Lost of straw and earthy smell. Floral hops, mild grapefruit and lemon.
The taste follows the nose with lots of peach, lemon, light grapefruit and floral hops. Light sweet malts and floral hops in the finish. A little peppery too. A nice complex brew that is perfect for summer.

Not a lover of this style really: ie the "imperial saison" or whatever you want to call a saison/farmhouse that clocks in at over 8% abv. That said, No technical faults -- this is a solid beer with plenty of interesting fermentation-driven stuff going on. Still, pretty sure I won't be picking it up again.

Poured a semi-transparent golden body with a thin cap of white head. Overall impression of appearance is of a typical saison, though with less head than typical for the style. Scents of white pepper, lemon zest at medium-high levels, a light fruitiness mingling with moderate floral and spicy hops and a subdued grainy malt. Overall impression of aroma is of a classic saison, very true to style. Flavor begins with strong phenols of white pepper, mingling with a citrus character of grapefruit and lemon zest with moderate bitterness and a soft grainy malt. Middle gains in dryness, still quite phenolic with citrus. Finish is dry with notes of white pepper and spicy hops mingling with citrus fruit and soft malt. Aftertaste is white pepper and grainy malt. Overall impression of flavor is of an excellent saison, very true to style and qutie enjoyable. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied and has effervescent carbonation with a drying finish. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a nice saison. Overall this is a nice saison. It has a wonderful character that sticks true to the style. No big surprises but quite pleasant to drink. Worth trying as it is a solid example of the style.

From a 750 ml bottle, this is a wonderful brew. Pale gold in color with a thick, pillow-like, white head. The smell is amazing...lots of fruit (citrus peel and banana). The taste is balanced, with a wonderful sweetness up front, an underlying Belgian bitterness, and a finish that is spicy and long-lasting. Wonderful. Soft and full in body. This is a great beer.

Poured into Tulip glass. Nice head, but went down to 1/2 f get after 10 minutes. Citrus-y on the nose. Fairly well carbonated. Reminds me of Duvel. Nothing particularly stands out m, quick, dry finish. Very nice.

I'd have to blind taste this vs Saison Dupont or Duvel to know which I prefer, as it's close race. Try 24.

A: Into a Duvel tulip pours a massive, rocky, lacey. dense white head on a murky deep golden body.

S: Into my nose pours a vast, pleasing, fruity core aroma, so good, I pour another beer to make this one last longer! It lingers with excellent yeasty, grassy, spring, and earthy notes.

T: Follows the abundant smell (which is the best part), and then yeast, herbal, coriander up front which converts to golden treacle candy /malt and then to a clove, pepper and citric finish.

M:Feels lighter side of medium body with peppery, prickly high carbonation. Long pleasing dry finish.

Overall: As good as any. Try 24. Happy beer discovery!

APPEARANCE: A hazy light amber/orange. Two+ fingers of off white, foamy head with good retention and nice lacing down the glass. Plenty of small bubbles rising up.
AROMA: Sweet and sour sauce, orange, lemon, and a bit of white pepper. Bready and yeasty.
TASTE: Bright citrus and then mild bitterness that turns into a pleasant sour note that lingers. Bready and a nice dose of pepper.
FEEL: Plenty of carbonation, medium body and a little slick right off the bat, but it dries up nicely on the back end.
OVERALL: Love that nice sharp, bright, bite right at the beginning. The beer has nice carbonation, nice balance among sweet, sour, and bitter. Good stuff.

12 oz. bottle poured into a modified pils glass. Light orange, hazy in the glass. Three finger head with lacing that still clings after 10 minutes. Very good foam.
Smells of lemon, clove, funky, and some sweat or horse or ? New to farmhouse/saisons but truly love them.
Taste the lemon or citrus slightly. Some clove and spice and fruit? Love that funk taste also, whatever it is. Palate not to keen.
Very creamy in the mouth. Abv not noticeable. Could be bad in the morning if not mindful.
Another beer that I love. Will always buy this brew. Too many that I need to keep on hand. Would recommend to anyone!
Great brew!!

Poured into pint glass, with golden clear color, and medium head. The aroma is very pleasantly lemony. Taste is very pleasant, with fruity afternotes. This is a strong ale, and the alcohol does come through in the finish. This is my favorite of the Boulevard's offerings.

On tap in a tulip glass. Hazy yellow-orange with an inch of white head. Citrus, pepper, and floral hops on the nose. Definitely some Belgian-style saison funkiness, but it's subdued. Taste is well-balanced. Hardly a trace of the 8.5% ABV. A bigger hop note than expected. Might actually guess this was an IPA if set in front of me without an introduction, but the saison notes are still certainly there. Lemon grass, pepper, pear, grapefruit. Mouthfeel is medium. I would get this again but wouldn't go out of my way for it. A solid hoppy saison.

On draft at malted barley. I'm not a huge fan of saisons but this is one of the better ones I've had. Taste is lemony/flowery drunk with a very creamy mouthfeel

A nice creamy head after the pour. Nose of grapefruit, wheat, and spice come right at you. Color is orange and hazy. Taste is hops, lemon, yeast. I get the peppery finish the label says after a few sips. This is currently my favorite non-IPA beer and definitely favorite saison.

Funky tart bitter yeast and hop bite at first, but then mellow into a nice sweet spicy fruity Belgian. A nice light creamy body that's light and refreshing. Love it! One of my favorites.

Tank 7 is straw colored in appearance and has a very pleasant and approachable amount of carbonation. It is a delicious saison that has a very nice helping of tropical notes and hoppy citrus at first, and then transitions to a bready malt body. It rounds out the sip with subtle notes of pepper and coriander like spice. It is a lighter bodied saison, which makes it a very crisp and clean beer. It is a very tasty brew and finishes very smooth, maybe even a little to smooth!

Pours a murky yellowish color with a 5 finger head that doesn't go away quickly. Drinks smooth. Can tastes the citrus and orange as well as the saison. Leaves a spicy pepperish aftertaste. Gives a nasty hangover if you over consume as I did last night.

I've been drinking this one for years – it was my first Boulevard, quite possibly my first saison as well. Still can't believe I haven't graded it until this day. It is as good as it has ever been. I think it is an exceptional example of the American style of this beer.

This review is of a 12 ounce bottle from their Great Eight Pack. Best by 5/6/16.

Pours a cloudy gold, very thick bright white foamy head with strong lacing. Very active carbonation. Things were moving in the glass up until I finished it, but there was no actual sediment.

Total lemon funk on the smell, tart citrus up front on the taste. Slight sour notes underlying, mouth filling, quite satisfying taste.

Love this one, will always drink it when given the opportunity.

Pours a golden color with an orange hue. A steady frothy white lace retains throughout. The aroma is citric and peppery. The taste is lemony, peppery and semi dry in the finish. Medium bodied and refreshing. Overall, I thought that this was a solid and tasty saison.

I'm a fan on Tank 7, especially when it pours from a bottle. I've had it dozens of times on draft and I still prefer the bottle. More fizz, less boozy and fresher than a mountain stream in springtime. In short, this is one yummy, hazed out farmhouse brew.

Great in bottle and as good on tap a few months later. Great stuff, peppery, floral, hop-forward but balanced and not too bitter, very refreshing. A classic saison from Missouri!

Bought in a 4-pack of 12 oz. bottles from Whole Foods in Arlington, VA. Marked as best by 7/31/16. Poured into a tulip glass.

Look: Cloudy and golden straw colored with a huge fluffy white head.

Smell: Predominantly hoppy and saison-y. Bright, clean scent.

Taste: Nice malt and yeast character, especially on the aftertaste. Maybe I've been drinking too many stouts lately, but this was a bit hoppier than I was expecting (my benchmark was my memory of Saison Dupont). Still, well-balanced.

Feel: Medium carbonation, medium body. Solid.

Overall: Enjoyable farmhouse ale, but a bit hoppier than I prefer.

Tank 7 pours an unfiltered looking yellow-orange with a foamy, white head. It leaves behind a great deal of lace. The aroma is sweet and citrus-y. The taste is sweet and citrus-y. Very robust, and yet smooth. Not overwhelming with it's flavor. It feels great as well. Really easy to drink, which might be unfortunate since it's 8.5% ABV. Overall, pick this beer up. It's probably one of the best known Boulevard beers. It tastes incredible good, with a little bit of sweetness, and it's really easy to drink - just remember it's 8.5%!

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Top notch stuff here, and I'm inclined to think that with another couple bottles I might score this even higher. The main knock is that it's just so big, you can't knock a couple back. Kind of hard to ding them too hard for that, of course, when the outcome is so tasty. Most of all, this is gorgeous to look at, vibrant, glowing peach gold hue, rocky layer of foam that hangs around as it should, nice lacing. Nose is very nice with good yeast character, some legit fruitiness, perhaps a touch of spicy phenols, and some nice graininess. Not especially funky, which I can dig and, frankly, think is overdone sometimes with saisons. Body is rich and full but quite drinkable, with a palate full of fruit (citrus)? and light yeasty flavor. It stays reasonably wet to my palate, not drying out much, but, again, I think that's one of its charms - this is a big, rich saison. Excellent stuff overall and one that I look forward to continuing to explore and understand. Well done, Boulevard.

Look: hazy gold, fairly large head. Looks carbonated and creamy.

Smell: not picking up as much here, yeast and malts. Smells citrus and yeast... and a little boozy.

Taste: Pepper, grapefruit peel, a little bit Ernest from the hops. Sweeter as it warms. Very yeasty.

Feel: Despite how bubbly it looks, this beer goes down smooth and creamy. Interesting, if not unexpected mouthfeel.

Overall: a mild, but odd saison. Almost Belgian in style. The citrus and the hops counter the sweet malt and yeast. Too sweet for me, but interesting enough to admire.

L: Hazy golden straw color. Pours a large creamy head that lingers for a lick time, lots of thick lacing on the glass.

S: Bready malt, lemon and orange peels, saison yeast is quite evident.

T: Lemon and orange peel, banana, saison yeast, a nice lemon peel bitterness in the finish, bready malt. Some malt sweetness. Complex and quite tasty.

F: Creamy mouthfeel, quite a bit of carbonation, the 8 abv is very well hidden.

O: A beer that lives up to the hype.
