Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Poured from bottle, quickly rising to two fingers of foamy head with strong retention and lacing. Aroma is a mix of tart, fruit, and a hint of malty sweetness and Belgian spice. Taste is not tart, but pleasant and lightly sweet; most resembles a saison. Feel is moderately carbonated and medium bodied, easy to drink and not boozy for 8.5%. Overall, a good farmhouse ale.

Pours cloudy gold color with a tiny bits of sediment and tons of carbonation racing up to an absolutely tremendous 3-4 finger cloudy/foamy off white head that was full of bubbles of all sizes and did not budge for several minutes; the head was so thick it looked like whipped cream and left excellent spotty foamy lacing all over the tulip glass and rings as it went down. Great way to start the show, it was very impressive to look at.

Smells of yeast, mild funk, lemon zest, coriander, orange peel, musty grapes, light grains, horse hair, grapefruit and lots of earthy notes. It’s light and airy smelling with citrus hops, pepper and some fruity sweetness that made it very enjoyable to inhale.

Tastes very similar to the nose with a nice malty sweetness, appropriate levels of yeast to emulate the Belgian’s finest, citrus hops and the associated lemon, orange peel and grapefruit, spices that showcase pepper and coriander, some more fruit like apple skin or a chilled white wine, and then a slight medicinal/aspirin like dry finish that was clean and left a lingering grainy sweetness.

Nice balance and a smooth crisp feel, this slid across the tongue with almost no carbonation, a light to medium body and a nice sweetness from the overall complexities in the brew that minimized the farmhouse elements and brought the fruity notes up front. Boulevard just started to get distributed in NY and I looked forward to trying this and it lived up to the hype. A very tasty beer that I will definitely have again, and a great American version of this style.

Light amber with great lacing. Fruity floral aroma hops. Grapefruit bittering hops with biscuity caramely malts. This one has great feel to it.

Very nice rendition of a farmhouse. Fuller bodied but still to style. Nice!
