Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

That's an example of a farmhouse saison.

A: Huge white foaming head, soapy mixed sized bubbles, I couldn’t even get the beer in the glass in one pour. Great retention and as the foam receded it gave the appearance of fluffy clouds and left a thick coat of spider web lacing on the edge of the glass. Straw yellow color with moderate haze. classic Saison

S:Moderate mango and pineapple hop aroma plays with the low level of spicey, pepery phenols from the yeast to provide a refreshing and inviting aroma. The grainy, bready malt aroma hides at threshold levels but supports the pleasant hop nose.

T: Mild to medium floral bitterness eludes to a tropical hop flavor (papaya, mango, strawberry) as the hopping adjusts on the pallet the grainy pilsner malt becomes more apparent along with the classic saison yesast flavors - cracked pepper, funky hay and clove. balance is on the hops at first but becomes more yeast driven towards the middle. Light sweetness with a refreshing bite at the finish.

M: Refreshingly dry finish with high carbonation levels make it very effervescent. Light alcohol warmth with a grainy dry finish on the tongue.

O: Very nice american version of a saison. I like to see interpretations of this style instead of reproduction of the classics and this one did it well. Nice fruity hops with a bit more alcohol.

On guest tap at dfh Fairfax poured into snifter. Slightly murky orange-yellow with a white head that settles to a collar. Dots and streaks of lace. Aroma is tropical fruit, Belgian yeast, spice, and pepper. Taste is spicy, fruity sweet, and peppery with peach on the swallow. Medium body, foamy texture, moderate carbonation, dry finish.

Poured into a goblet from a bottle.

Color is clear pale gold with a huge foamy white head. Retention and lacing are good.
Aroma - first thing that comes to mind is lemon-pepper seasoning. It has citrus hop aromas along with the typical Belgian light fruits and spice.
Flavor is more lemon pepper. Definitely some citrus hops, light fruit and pale malt on the palate with a bite of peppery spice on the finish.
Body is medium with a lot of carbonation. Finish is dry.

Overall, a very enjoyable beer. This style has so much variability I'm not sure what is normal, so I can't really comment on its appropriateness for the saison style.
