Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

BBD 4/22/15. Pours a semi-hazy gold with a slight amber hue. World Class massive head, lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of citrus (lemon), biscuit and associated sweetness, hints of clove and pepper spiciness, classic Belgian yeast and just a touch of funk (which becomes more pronounced as it warms).

Medium bodied with a smooth texture. As it warms, creamy characteristics also emerge. Well carbonated with nice amounts of effervescence from the onset. At room temperature, the body is heavy medium and rather creamy.

The outstanding flavor profile is crisp and intense, extremely complex and well balanced. It begins with a burst of blended flavors that slowly separate into tart lemon, notes of pepper and clove (classic Belgian flavors) that flow into the other classic component, banana. The middle is a slight funk over a rich biscuit sweetness with distinct cracker notes.

The finish is quite crisp, a bit dry, and leaves you with a lemon tartness and flavor over an ever so subtle funk.

Best by 8/27/15. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a beautiful shiny golden; fluffy eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great retention and sticky lacing. Bubbles are constantly swimming to the top. Very nice aromas. I'm picking up some grapefruit and lemon. There's a subtle hop aroma. Yeast notes are there. Some spices. The aromas have a nice sweetness going on. Flavors are sharp and crisp. Very vibrant. More citrus notes. Some banana. Clove and coriander is in the mix. Subtle black pepper notes. Some grass and subtle pine notes. Floral notes too. Finishes clean dry with a subtle hop bite. Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied with active carbonation. Very creamy and fluffy. Very smooth. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Fun to drink.

This is a great brew. Boulevard really seems to know what they're doing with these styles. Well executed. Recommended.

Grapefruity goodness; but I typically like my beers less sour.

Poured into chalice, head presents 2 inches thick and lingers at least 1/2 inch thick for quite a while. head color is white, body is gold, transparent at the bottom and dense through the thicker part of the glass. nice presentation.

Smell is fresh, floral, great yeast off flavors in the form of phenols and clove; hops are floral, fruity and quite noticeable.

Taste is similarly fresh and flavorful: malts are noticeable at first, pleasant clean pilsen and toasted type malts, bread and biscuit are noticeable. Hops are more subtle but floral and bitter, lemon. yeast off flavors are phenol, light spice, pepper.

Mouthfeel is pleasant, and just sharp enough for a dry saison.

Overall, a great saison, clean, crisp taste with yeasty flavors and dry finish.
