Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

APPEARANCE: Every time I pour this beer the head is enormous...kind of to a fault. Foam piles up just as high as the actual beer underneath. At least the foam is a gorgeous, eggshell white that takes forever (or at least 5 minutes) to fall to a reasonable level. Enough fussing about what's above the beer though, the liquid underneath is beautiful. Somewhere between pale straw and very light orange the color of this beer only serves to fool the drinker into thinking this is an easy, "light" beer. Thousands of tiny bubbles steadily race to the top and if the glass is swayed or swirled they'll all change directions together...looking like a school of fish.

SMELL: The aroma could be a little more intense. Mostly bready with very light hints of spice and maybe a touch of banana. There is also a little tiny bit of coriander.

TASTE: The citrus in this beer is mmm...delicious. Orange and lemon up front, but some grapefruit actually creeps in as well. The spice character is present, but lighter than other Saisons I've had. That said, a little black pepper finishes this beer off just right after waves of big, juicy, fruit flavors.

MOUTHFEEL: Perfect. Medium bodied plus 5%...super easy to drink, but just big enough to have some oomph to it. The light tickle allows this beer to be gulped far quicker than it should be, but only adds to its effervescent feel.

OVERALL: Tank 7 is an intensely satisfying beer. I've only said this about a handful of beers in the past, but this is one that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Every time I reach for this beer I am happy I did. It may not be the most rare, highest ABV, barrel-aged, hoppiest thing in the world, but it oozes class and consistency. I know that it will be great every time, yet it still surprises me each time I reach for it. This is one of the timeless classics of the American Craft Beer movement. Long live Tank 7.

A quintessential Saison, hits all the read notes with the bready, earthy malt and the dry fruit. Mostly citrus in this instance. Great mouthfeel, crisp medium carbonation, finishes pretty clean. A great American take on the style.

Boulevard has hit Eastern OH (and by default Western PA)... I was really looking forward to this. Poured a golden amber into my tulip. Two fingers of glorious white head that hung around for quite a while. This has a big, bready nose with a nice spicy note (coriander I would imagine). The yeast is also very present and accounted for. As the glass warmed a bit, some nice mango notes began to break out. The flavor was awesome. Big, strong bready backbone was supporting a tropical fruit medley... spicy notes from the yeast and just an overall clean presentation. The mouthfeel was smooth, definitely coated the palate and lingered a moment with a funky little punch that let you know you were drinking it. Nothing else to say, except that this came together into a fantastic beer. Get it.

Thoroughly enjoyed from a growler in a snifter. This fine saison pours a luminous yellow golden color with a firm fluffy white head that later dissipates to a fine pool of foam and excellent lacing. Nose of sweet pale malts, earthy yeasty goodness, white pepper, spicy hops, and notes of citrus fruits. Flavors are complex. Sweet light malts collide with grapefruit and citrus flavors from the hops with a peppery flavor that persists to the end being rounded out by a light grain character. Crisp and lightly dry finish is aided by excellent carbonation making for a great mouth feel.

VERY ENJOYABLE!

One of the best examples of the style I have had.

Enjoyed this one a lot. Pours beautifully, a hazy gold. Very fruity, floral aroma. Taste is that of hops and clove with fresh citrus fruit mixed in. Overall this was an extremely pleasant experience.

This beer is mildly hazed but still bright, about a pale-medium golden yellow that's consistent in its color throughout the body. The head is a bone white one, a nice pillow of fluffy holding up well at just under a finger and never dropping very much, leaving some good patching behind.
This has all the hallmarks of a good Saison: it's dry and fluffy with a certain softness but still somewhat juicy, earthy with a bit of herb and gentle spice notes only well-employed Belgian yeast and impart. Grass, lemon, and a bit of white pepper make for a very consistent aroma and flavor from beginning to end.
The body is as light and fluffy as the head but not insubstantial. It's dry but creamy, with the juiciness cutting the dry edge just enough. The finish lingers gently with some herb and spiciness. Crispness is even and bites just a little all the way through.
