Harvest DanceHarvest Dance
Notes: John Barleycorn is memorialized in English folk tradition as the personification of the barley plant, sacrificed at harvest time and then reborn as beer or ale. Our Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is a celebration of John’s Midwestern cousin, wheat. Beginning with a large portion of wheat malt, we add an equally generous helping of Hallertau and Citra hops and age the ale on both French and American oak. The result is a big, warming burst of tropical fruit flavors, highlighted by subtle wine-like notes, and rounding slowly to a long, dry, oaky finish.

Batch 1-2009

A- Pours a hazy orange/golden color with a massive, thick, creamy bone-white head. Looks outstanding.

S- Caramel, cotton candy, and a decent amount of hoppiness. Smells like a slightly aged well made barleywine.

T- Loads of citrusy hops right up front with a simple malt backing... then nothing on the finish. Slightly metallic and empty on the finish. Very strange and empty.

M- A nice creamy body with a great level of carbonation. The finish is thin and slightly metallic, which kind of kills it.

D- Starts out fantastic, but the flat, boring, finish really seems odd and is disappointing. Not all that intriguing.

Have had this bottle since February, finally cracked it tonight. Batch 2010-1, best by date of 07/11 on the bottle. Poured from a 750ml bottle into my DFH snifter.

a - - Pours a hazy burnt orange-brown color with two fingers of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Head lasts for several minutes and leaves light lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of tropical fruits, citrus hop, wheat, fruity malts, bready malts, oak, some grapes, and wine. Pretty nice and fruity; I like it quite a bit.

t - Tastes of same tropical fruits, fruity malts, citrus hops, grapefruit, alcohol, bready malts, wheat, some oak, and some light wine. Alcohol is more prevelant here, but just as fruity as the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate to high carbonation, with some heat from the alcohol in the body. A little too hot and a little too much carbonation, but otherwise nice.

o - Overall a pretty nice barleywine. Lots of fruits and while there is some alcohol in the taste, it gets better as it warms up. A little less heat and carbonation and this could be even better. Would certainly have it again.

Pours a hazy golden orange color, with a huge, dense white head that sits on top and doesn't move. Lacing is the entire head, and just stays there.

Smell all hop fruitiness, with a subtle but present malt backbone. Lots of citrus and bitterness, with just a hint of alcohol.

Taste is very sharp, tons of hops and booze. Definitely needs a lot of time in the cellar, and is hot, sweet, and slightly metallic right now.

Mouthfeel is thin, which does not help the huge hop imbalance.

Drinkability is decent, see above.

Overall, a cellar beer if I've ever had one. I wish I had another.

As with the rest of the Smokestacks, the carbonation is huge, so be careful pouring. Head is fairly thick and bubbly, and the color is reddish-orange. Retention is excellent, and a thick, somewhat crackled lacing is left behind. Aroma involves the obvious malt and wheat, as well as a sharp citrisy notes that strike at the end, some spice, and a slight sourness. Tastes of pure wheat, more spice and fruits, and a yeasty base with some slightly sweet malts enveloping it all and a middle layer of bitterness that finishes things off to near perfection. Goes down crisp with a nice little alcohol heat lingering in the throat. Boulevard can seem to do no wrong these days, and this is a tasty and unique addition to an already stellar lineup.

Brown color with lots of orange - big ass bubbling is frankly pretty surprisingly, although the difficulty I had getting the cork off would attest to the carbonation. Good chunkiness and stick to the foam.

Aromas are citric and herbal, with an earthy character that nicely complements the caramel sweetness. Riding high on the wave of Citra hopping is a touch of alcoholic pepper.

Somewhat hoppy, but this wheat wine is a hint different from the barleywine style. While sweetness

750ml corked & caged. My first wheatwine. I sort of expected something like a barleywine, which is to say I expected no carbonation. The healthy "pop" of the cork & dense, active, sticky head are a pleasant surprise. It is a dark gold with very active carbonation. Smells of honey, hay, a touch of horse blanket, and a vague citrus. Tastes malty and nutty, with a slight acidic finish. The aftertaste is very pleasantly earthy. The mouthfeel is great. Sharply carbonated and then a light but viscous body. The drinkability is great. The alcohol is just a pleasant warmth going down and that earthy aftertaste is just what the Dr. ordered. Then he ordered me another one. Then I had a nap.

750ml bottle $9. Nice orange color with a super-foamy head, I was actually surprised how much this one foamed up. The smell was kind of weird like a belgian style beer, strange and I wasn;t too impressed. The flavor had some tropical fruit just as the label noted but overall it was kind of boring, a little bit of vanilla and alcohol. This is not a beer I would revisit but I will always give the smokestack beers a whirl.

750mL bottle into a snifter
Batch number/ best by: 2012-1 / 06-2013

A: Pours a hazy golden, dark straw color with a big, dense 2 plus fingers width of slightly off white head. Very good retention as it takes minutes to dissipate down to a thick film that hangs around for the remainder of the drink. Leaves tons of lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Lots of estery belgian yeast aromas, a surprising amount of musty funk which I wasnt expecting, lots of herbaceous notes like wheat and lemongrass, along with lemony citrus and a hint of spice. Aromas are strong, but it smells light and refreshing.

T: Wheat, clove and white pepper spiciness, estery sweetness. Really surprised by the high degree of spice. Citrus in the form of lemon and orange peel. Some mild banana notes on finish. I get very little hop characters. Flavors as a whole are quite strong. Im not very familiar with the wheat wine style but this one tastes a lot like a spice heavy Tripel.

M/D: Full bodied, almost thick, but with a really heavy carbonation that makes it feel lighter than it is. Drinkability is somewhat limited by the huge carbonation, but considering the near double digit ABV its pretty good.

O: Overall, I enjoyed this one. As I said above Im not very familiar with the wheatwine style, the only other one I've had was White Chocolate which is amazing but I dont think is representative of the style. To me this one was definitely reminiscent of a Tripel. I could see myself enjoying this on a hot summer day, which certainly isnt always the case with high gravity beers. I enjoyed this, would recommend, and plan to keep an eye out for more in the style to compare.

A: This poured a hazy gold with tons of off white head.
S: It smelled like strong fresh wheat, with bitter citrus zest and wild honey and lemongrass.
T: It tasted like citrus zest and fresh wheat, with some wild honey and subtle oak. It had a clean and bitter aftertaste.
M: It was oily with lots of natural carbonation. Great body.
D: This was a unique wheat wine with a very "true" wheat scent and taste. The body was refined, and the finish was smooth, and the alcohol was well hidden. So it was surprisingly easy to drink. It would probably age well, but it was also good fresh. I wish the barrel character was more prominent, but this was otherwise a very well constructed and enjoyable beer.

Ridiuclous head, more than half of this pint glass actually. Debating whether this is infected. Head takes forever to become "drinkable", clumpy lacing ones it does.

Big hefeweizen whiff...cloves and bananas.

Most notion of this beer being infected is gone...well infected to the point of nonconsumption anyways, its pretty tasty! Citrus, mango...bananas, cloves. ABV of 9.1% is kept it check.

Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Medium to medium-low carbonation.

This is my first "wheatwine" offering and I really didn't find it too different than some of the higher alcohol content hefeweizens out there ie. New Glarus Dancing Man Wheat. I really enjoyed Harvest Dance. If it weren't for the obnoxious head that formed after every pour I this would be an easy "A rated" beer for me. If and when I ever buy this again I hope I have better results appearance-wise.

Poured into a chalice glass @ 48 degrees. This is my first Wheatwine, here goes. Pours a dusty copper with an impressive head that is fed by a hefty amount of carbonation. Smells of light fruity esters mingling with a light malt sweetness. Subtle amount of earthy/floral hops noted as well along with some alcohol. Noticably effervescent in the mouth. Light candied apples, sweet malts, light caramelized sugar sweetness, black pepper and honey are picked up in the taste. It is what I imagine an Imperial Saison would taste like, not sure if such a thing actually exists. Full bodied with a dry finish that hangs out for a while. Opens up nicely as the head sttles down and the beer warms up a few degrees. Very interesting beer.
