Notes: Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Pours a deep crimson red color that appears a dark tawny mahogany in the glass with golden orange edges and a three finger frothy beige head that very slowly settles into a thick lasting cap/ring. Excellent retention, lingering throughout the pour and coating the glass with large rings and streaks of soapy lacing. Impressive looking beer.

Sweet, slightly spicy aroma with a delicate barrel presence that's well integrated into the complex malt bill of the base beer. Was expecting, and actually prefer, stronger barrel notes but the nose if this beer is still inviting with a nice blend of charred oak, spicy whiskey, toasted coconut, peppery rye, dark fruit and sweet caramel malts. Dry wood with boozy sweetness and spicy rye from the whiskey. Subtle vanilla and coconut followed by vinous sweetness with some fig, plum and raisin. Caramel malt sweetness with toffee, roasted but and dark breads. The nose isn't all that impressive lacking bolder barrel characteristics. Still, it's not offensive in any way, just somewhat bland.

Thankfully, the flavor profile is anything but bland. There's and explosion of dry, spicy rye that dominates the palate, lingering over the barrel notes and sweet malt backbone into a bone dry finish. Nice balance of barrel, rye and malt sweetness of the base but it's almost too much rye. It's a shock to the palate at first, but once the palate adjusts, the other flavors come through. Dry charred oak that's slightly burnt but doesn't have much of a harsh toothpick flavor. Very nice spicy spirit presence which was lacking in the nose. Spicy spirit adding nice rye whiskey flavor without much heat. Some boozy sweetness and warmth in the finish but overall the high ABV is very well masked. In addition to the oak and spirit, there is some silky mallow and vanilla bean from the barrel along with toasted coconut. Underneath the barrel is a complex malt bill with heavy rye component countered by caramel and dark fruit sweetness. Again, the spicy, peppery rye flavor dominates but the other malt flavors come forward as it warns. Caramel sweetness with toffee, hazelnut, fig, date and raisin. Overall, this is another very solid release in the smokestack series. Complex with great oak, whisky, rye and sweeter malt flavors. Definitely a sipper but much easier to drink than anticipated.

2012 bottle was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to nothing quickly. It is a murky amber color with no vision of anything.

Smell: Toffee, caramel, oak, toasted, vanilla, cherries, dark fruits, figs, and warm alcohol. Smells good.

Taste: Same as above and very cool. Some bitterness and and booze in the rear too. Above aromas blended well on the palate.

Mouthfeel: Really smooth, nice warm booze, medium to full bodied, a bit dry, light tingly bitterness, and medium carbonation.

Overall: Wow, wow, wow. Thus I'd one stellar beer. Very sad to not see it in the top beers categories, but it will always be a top beer for me. I look forward to the next year of this beer anf many more afterwards.

Been waiting a while to crack this one. Garnet colored with sediment abound and a large off white foamy head that holds suprisingly good retention considering ABV. Chunky lace also.

Woody and toasted vanilla aromas at the forefront with spicey rye esters, green tea, red currant, raisin, brown sugar, hints of floral hop.

Very nice. Full of toffee and caramel, dates and fig and a touch of prune. Vanilla oak, with woody tannins on the finish. Thick and creamy with good moderate carbonation levels. A bit of earthy hops and spicey characters on the finish from the rye. Nice alcohol burn in the chest. But overall a very tasty friendly beer.

Thanks to forgetfu for this one!

750mL brown glass cork & caged bottle. Bottle number 5678 of 12148.

Pours a ruddy/muddy brown with some amber hues and very little off-white head.

Nose is heavily whiskey influenced with that spicy rye vanilla/white pepper note. A little toffee and mocha too.

Palate is boo-wait for it- zey! At first it tastes like someone poured a shot of straight rye in a barley wine. A little thin on the body. Orange zest, vanilla beans, toffee, a little oily, a little sharp from the alcohol content, finish is a little "green" (vegetal). Finish is almost clean, but there's gripping spiciness from the whiskey and oak tannins.

Notes: Perhaps the best of the 3 Rye on Rye beers I've had (this one, Smuttynose Ry(e)an, and Lenny Bruce RIPA on Rye). The whiskey influence is good, but I'm starting thing that you cannot successfully integrate rye whiskey into a rye-based ale. Just doesn't meld well. Glad to have tried it though.

A best by date of 07-2017 from the Thrillogy box set poured in my 13oz. snifter.

Look- Pours a toffee color leaving a ring of off white foam around the glass.

Smell- Bannana, whiskey, and some clove in the back.

Taste- Hot whiskey up front, followed by bannana, toffee and some clove.

Feel- Slick with a pretty good punch of heat.

Overall- A pretty tasty beer that is split between big barrel characteristics and flavors of banana and clove I'm guessing is from the yeast. It's quite tasty while being on the heavy whiskey side. It's worth a try for lovers of barrel aged beer.

Like rye? Have this one! The smell is rye heaven. The feel maintains a lighter presence despite the sheer tonnage of rye potency. The flavor is not nuanced, but boldy punches your palate with rye, oak, and hints of lemon and cherry.
