Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Big thanks to kspongeworthy for this bottle...

A: Pours a nice murky redish/purple/brown. (Maybe that's just the label influencing me. There is about one full finger of off-white head that settles in a decent amount of time. I get small amount of lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is: (in no particular order) booze, spice, caramel, vanilla, cherries, and raisins. It's hard to distinguish a dominate smell, as all of the notes can be picked out if you're looking for them.

T: I get a hit of sweet vanilla right up front. That transitions quickly to booze, caramel, and spice. There is touch of bitter/funk (this is not a funky beer, don;t take that the wrong way) that eventually comes back to sweet and boozy. This beer is hot, but it's tolerable.

M: Medium bodied beer. The palate shifts as this beer progresses. There isn't much that coats or lingers, aside from the booze.

O: I didn't think this beer was all that good at the start, but towards the end of the glass I'm really enjoying it. It's hot, but there is something with the tart cherry/sour raisin that is keeping me with this beer. It's not my favorite Boulevard brew, but it's still darn good.

I love rye, so this one should be one to remember. Cheers!

Brewed three months before the date of this tasting (Batch number: 2012-2).

A: There’s a thick, dirty-brown body to this beer; a rusty hue, so hazy that it’s nearly opaque. The head is beige, a big finger of foam before thickening up to some foamy retention. Lacing is abundant, yet oily, slowing moving back down into the body.

S: This one’s very boozy, but in a spicy whiskey way. Woody astringency, maple syrup, artificial vanilla, peppery spice, and dark, hot alcohol – that’s definitely a rye whiskey barrel. Rye grains beneath lay out a great bready underbelly, with pumpernickel spice, chili powder, and roast. I’m getting a ton of fruit to finish it off, too, lifting the palate from just straight alcohol: lots of fig, cherry, and raisin.

T: Boldly boozy, with the right-off-the-bat power of whiskey, bitter dark chocolate, hot cinnamon, and oak. This feels more like a liqueur than a beer, with its incredibly thick and boozy flavor. Astringent syrupiness of vanilla, molasses, coke syrup, and Dr. Pepper. There’s even a bit of smooth leather, dark mushroom flavors, chamomile tea, and chipotle; it’s a meal in a bottle. The rye flavors are all toasted bread and woody spice, as robust as they get. Finishes with a taste of brown sugar and oak alcohol; dry only in its booze tendency.

M: The body is only thick in its alcohol; otherwise, it’s a foamy, smooth powerhouse. It’s hot, drying the palate with a moment of alcoholic warmth.

O: Rye-on-Rye is more booze than everything. Imagine an old ale with a shot of whiskey and you’ve got this explosive brew; it’s intensely flavorful and alcoholic. It isn’t my favorite style, but it definitely satisfies.

This beer was great. If you enjoy whiskey, especially rye this beer is for you. It was the initial punch of a sip of rye but then mellows in your pallet to what I would describe as being as close to rye as possible but still maintaining its beer roots.

Served on-tap in a tulip at Bigelo's Bistro in Edwardsville, IL. Hazy, dark brown body with a crimson hue. A one-finger light tan head the dissipates fairly quickly leaving very little lacing.

The aroma is very light overall but has notes of rye, of course, and sweet caramel malt in a dominant way, with much lighter hints of raisin and banana.

The flavor is superb and very complex. I didn't check but this has to be a Belgian yeast with the flavor mix. Rye, whiskey, fig, caramel malt, banana, raisin, and a slight note of hops makes for an excellent flavor mix.

Very smooth mouthfeel and way too drinkable for the high abv. Might be the best Boulevard beer I've ever had. Highly recommend.

Next to BBQ, this is the most excited I've been to try something from Boulevard. Bomber purchased as MSCM and poured into a Hunahpu's snifter on April 19th, 2012.

A - Murky brown coloring with ruby hues. One-finger, light tan head. Retention amount to a frothy film. Really good lacing.

S - Plentiful rye spices, figs, banana, and raisin bread. The barrel notes play second fiddle, with hints of oak and rye whiskey blended with further toffee. The base aroma here seems inherently Quad-like.

T - Strong raisin and date bitterness morphs into a rear palate of deep caramel and whiskey barrel flavors. Not particularly complex, rather mellow presentation. No alcohol presence throughout.

M - Medium body, very smooth. Velvety-light carbonation, adequate for pushing darker notes through. Touch of alcohol warming.

D - I definitely prefer the nose here. The front end of the drink is particularly weak and I'd prefer a bit more barrel presence overall, particularly some sweetness to balance everything else. Worth a visit but don't expect an overwhelming success.

Had on tap at Wild Monk in LaGrange. 2012 vintage. Served in snifter.

A: Pours a deep amber body, slightly hazy, with some plum like hues running through middle. A thin, light tan head forms on the pour and subsides to a thin collar and film. Some soapy splotches of lace of left down the glass.

S: Rye spiciness is with the whiskey coming through is prevelant up front and through each smell. As it warms more of the dark, bready malts and the barrel sweetness start to come through.

T: The barrel really takes over the taste here. Big rye whiskey flavors, some light oak and vanilla. Dark rye bread malts with a touch of some mild hops on the finish mixing with some alcohol. As the beer warmed the malt bill opened up and some caramel sweetness showed itself as well.

M: Medium bodied with some slight warming in the throat. Medium carbonation. The barrel presence really has a lingering effect on the palate.

O: As the beer warmed it got progressively sweeter and more complex. This does need some time to mellow out as the barrel is really taking over the base beer and you lose out one some of the fine qualities of the rye beer itself. Overall though, this was a nice beer and I will give the one I have in the cellar a solid year to see how it develops.

Had on tap at New World Tavern—served into a pint glass

Appearance: red-brown in color, hazy, 1.5 inch head, moderate carbonation

Smell: whiskey barrel and light rye

Taste: light rye that becomes more present as the beer warms. followed by huge sweet caramel/vanilla/ and toffee with big whiskey oaking through the finish

Mouthfeel: very sticky sweet but not cloying, moderate carbonation, medium bodied

Overall: Amazing. Maybe the best from Boulevard that I have had and certainly one to revisit. I love the oaking in here especially the way it combines with the caramel malt. My only complaint is I wish the rye was more pronounced. That said, as long as I do not expect to get a rye bomb, this is phenomenal.

I have XicanoBeerRun to thank for cracking this open. Bottle #27107, from the 2012 vintage.

This pours a ruby amber color. Well, it’s more amber colored but there’s a light ruby colored hue to it in the light.
The aroma has notes of butterscotch and English toffee, some oak, some mellowed rye whiskey, and a light caramel to it. A lot of those descriptions overlap and have a lot in common with a nice whiskey, too.

The flavor is real pleasant with the mellowness of a smooth bourbon and a little bit of spice that comes out as it warms, a contribution from the rye whiskey barrel aging and rye beer base.

Mellow and smooth, this has some sweet notes of toffee and butterscotch, a little leather, some orange marmalade and no significant hop flavors to speak of. There is a little spice at the end as it finishes and a moderate hop bitterness. The rye whiskey characteristics become more notable as it warms. Give it some time and it will open and transform into a beer sharing some “quad-like” characteristics, with dark stone fruits, like dates and figs and plums, coming through flavor-wise. A lighter bodied beer than I was expecting. While it clocks in at 11% the alcohol isn’t a key player. My second glass had far more spice and some bittering, possibly a result of it warming up and opening even more. This was enjoyable and a fun bottle to share as it kept evolving.

Poured into a snifter. Low carbonation. Beautiful reddish brown color.

67% of this beer was aged in a rye barrel. Admittedly it was difficult for my nose to sense the difference in a rye barrel aroma versus a bourbon barrel aroma, etc. Regardless, it smelled fantastic. The barrel did not hold back.

The taste was slightly bitter up front followed by a rush of rye. The rye taste was beautiful. I tasted zero hops. I noticed a buttery aftertaste. I do not know what created this, but it worked.

I liked this beer, but it did not inspire me like I hoped it would.

I’ll have another.

Poured from a corked bomber into a corsendonk christmas chalice- pours a slightly hazy rusty reddish brown with a one finger head that quickly dissipated and left very light lacing.

Smells a LOT like whiskey- definitely get the booze, a very sharp rye smell, and a good amount of wood.

Taste is incredible- rye whiskey beer simply put. Sharp rye and alcohol burn at the beginning; the rye smoothes out into a sweet rye malt and finishes with a little earthy yeast, wood, and rye.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a light to moderate carbonation- alcohol warming and burn is a big part of this brew as it seems to be brewed to taste like rye whiskey. They did exceptionally well. Get this beer if you like whiskey!

Next up for me in their Smokestack Series, which I love almost all of them, and I'm a fan of rye, so this should be a treat. Finishing an entire 750ml by myself... that will be a challenge.

Pours an off-white fizzy head that reaches a finger before biding back fairly quickly, the bubbly fizzy fades fast... but then hits a meniscus of a nice layered head that sticks to the sides of the glass and thinner in the middle, leaving a meniscus like look, also reinforced by bubbles floating from the bottom through the super hazy, sediment laden, ruby mahogany red colored beer.

Nose is great, reminds me of Ry(e)an ale, but maybe a bit heavier. A nice juicy malt base, with reddish toasty copper malts, plenty of caramel, toffee, and even a bit of molasses. Some spicy rye cuts through with a sharpness, a light fruitiness almost stone fruit like, hints of candied fig, and a dark fruit jelly. Then some booze comes through slightly tingling my nose, brought out even more by a bourbon like rye whisky aroma, there is a definite straight up whisky aroma built in, and hints of vanilla barrel.

Taste continues right where the aroma left off, starting with whisky though. Rye whisky explodes with hints of bourbon and a bit more vanilla barrel again. Then juicy malts come through again, reddish copper malts, tons of caramel, candied apple, molasses, hints of maple like syrup as well, and even a slight chocolate malt flavor with cocoa. it has a slight syrupy feel but fluffy at the same time as there is quite a bit of carbonation. Booze comes through strong with plenty of tingle and warmth to let you know that is truely is 11%, as well as a bit of a booze taste slightly fusel. It also bring a light smoky like taste and some barrel char that adds to the bitterness and gives it a slight unpleasant flavor, probably the only thing keeping this from hitting 4.5 on the flavor. Underneath all that is hints of fruit, stone fruit, again candied apple and candied fig, a bit of jam, and plenty of spicy rye flavors. The finish dries a bit and is slightly sticky but not nearly as sticky or syrupy as I expected it to be, a bit of warming booze, and plenty of lingering long flavorful finish, with more rye, whisky, candied fruits, hint of barrel char, and juicy malts.

Mouth is fuller bodied but not as thick as I expected, tons of carbonation, and plenty of warming tingly booze.

Overall quite good, again similar to Ry(e)an ale but a bit bigger, boozier, but not quite as good. The barrel really comes through with some barrel char, vanilla, and plenty of whisky flavors, and if it had a bit of bourbon that really would have put it over the top. Nice malts, caramel, hint of cocoa, nice spicy rye, candied stone fruits, and bit of juicy malts add a nice complex flavor. The booze is a bit much, but whats to be expected for 11%, and a bit of bitterness more from the rye and char than hops, but tasty. A great tasting beer, but hard to finish an entire 750ml bottle by myself.

Anxious to see how this compares to Brau Brothers' Rye Wyne. Sounds like pretty much the same beer.

Pours a hazy golden amber with a healthy dose of smooth creamy tan head.

The nose boasts whiskey, earthy grains, caramel, almost like a BA barleywine. Some toffee and light cocoa character.

The flavors are far more restrained than in the Rye Wyne... many of the same attributes but not as pungent I guess. Very good nevertheless.

The feel is just a bit thin but quite drinkable for its potency.

Overall, I'd choose the Rye Wyne over this one 9 time out of ten. This one is more approachable though which is nice.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a snifter

Dark amber with a off-white three finger head that dissipates fairly quickly after a very firm pour. Initial aroma of whiskey, slight undertones of wood, and hints of spicyness from the rye. Very complex taste rye spicyness combined with sweet malt, light accents of charred wood, ripe fruit, and booze. Heavy-medium to light-full bodied with a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Really exceptional brew that is really unique. Definitely one to try if you haven't.

White head that's just short of an inch tall. Dark murky amber in color. Andover average head retention and lacing.

Whiffs of whiskey and malt.

Spicineas from the rye then a whiskey aftertaste. There aeems to be aome dark fruits in there somewhere, cherries perhaps. Leaves a definite alcohol taste in the mouth. Would put this right at the stated 11%abv.

Real smooth, low carbonation. Medium- heavy mouthfeel.

Pretty girl drank this with me and we enjoyed it. Worth seeking out for any rye beer or whiskey barrel fan. Another Boulevard Smokestack success.

2012 vintage poured from a 750ml bottle. It poured dark caramel brown in color with a thin white head covering the top.

The aroma has a strong woody oak presence to it with some good vanilla notes along with a modest bourbon flavor. Some malty caramel and bready rye come out in it as well. Oak is a little dominant but overall pretty good.

The taste also shows a lot of woody oak to it with vanilla and some bourbon showing up more towards the finish. Caramel and some spicy, bready rye is there as well. Again, a little oak dominated but good.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being moderate for the style. Overall it was a pretty good beer, the oak dominated a little but the caramel and bourbon notes that came out were really good. It felt pretty close to being great, but didn't quite get there.

Pours into a tulip a murky reddish brown. Beige head sticks around pretty decently as a cap, some lace.

Lots of sweet fruity malts, caramel, spice, bourbon is mellow at first but grows with warmth.

Lots of dark fruit, spicy rye malt, caramel, bourbon+oak are somewhat mellow but definitely grow with warmth like the scent. Has a slight tart twang to it, reminds me of their BBQ a bit, I wonder if they used the same barrels. Light hoppage and vanilla show through.

Smooth. Full-bodied, carbonation at a good level, grows to be quite warming and boozy but not really a deterrent.

I like the flavorful and mellow bourbon but the base beer doesn't seem to bring much to the table. Still it definitely pulls of a nice unique combo of a rye beer/rye whiskey, it's enjoyable.

An excellent clear, copper red body with a big, fat, thick and creamy white head. Foam clings stubbornly to the glass...

Excellent rye spiciness in the nose with a soft malt grain character. A bit of red licorice is in there as well.

Bold rye and barley taste, well-balanced. Somewhat sour. Soft bitterness sneaks up on you, fading nicely in the finish.

Heavy mouthfeel with a wet, juicy feel in the mouth.

One of the best rye beers I've encountered in a while. Good balance between the grains, hops not overly assertive in the aroma but coming through well in the bittering department. An excellent rye quaff!

Another great release from Boulevard.

A: 2 finger khaki colored head with good retention forms atop a deep rusty brown bodied brew. Mostly cloudy, but was still able to see bubbles rising.

S: Caramel and bourbon characteristics are most prominent. Hints of spicy notes from the rye begin to poke through, but never become overbearing as dark fruits bring up the rear.

T: Very interesting beer we have here. Great to get a whiskey aged brew that isn't a stout or a barleywine. Spicy rye notes rush out of the gates, but are soon mellowed by the rye whiskey, vanilla, and dark fruit flavors.

M: Medium bodied, creamy front with a sharp carbonated backend.

O: I found this beer not only to be great, but also brave. I hope other breweries begin aging non-traditional beers like this one.

This beer pours a medium bodied cherry wood brown with a one finger soapy and creamy two finger head. Te nose features smooth and spicy rice with a touch of rye whiskey. I expected it to be a little more pronounced. You could say that the aromas are holding back a bit. The flavors are nice and malty. There is plenty of spicy rye with a nice about of rye whiskey, some caramel, and some toffee with a slightly soapy finish. The flavors are nice. I like how the rye base works with the whiskey. They complement each other well. If anything there could be more whiskey presence. Luckily it builds as it warms but even then there could be more. It drinks medium in body and not necessarily over carbonated but it instantly stimulates your entire palate in an effervescent type of manner. Overall this is a nice beer. I definitely prefer it to their bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. This is yet another high quality beer from the Smokestack series.

Beer number 4 of the Astros #brewandbaseball challenge! I'm behind but doing my best to catch up. Poured from bottle into CBS Snifter. Pours a nearly transparent dark amber color, some decent head retention, which is surprising given the ABV and Barrel aging. A creamy looking texture to this beer. Smell- booze, molasses, some spicy bready notes from the rye. Woody barrel notes, some vanilla. Alcohol is obvious. This will be a really boozy bastard. Taste- the booze is puckering. its pretty much all I am getting at the front of the tongue, resembles straight rye whiskey. Some nice woody notes and vanilla linger around the sides of my mouth, but I struggle to get a lot of depth and complexity to this one. After the booze, it seems that the flavors are a little muddled. Nothing stands out, but this is a beer that will have to develop in order to be worthy. I'll review again after a year and see what comes of it, but would not recommend to drink it fresh. Not a great experience, not a horrible one.

I love rye beer, and I love rye whiskey. Hopefully the two can work well together.

LOUD cork. Absolutely beautiful and unusual color. A red to burgundy with yellow tinted head. Head diminishes quickly. Good amount of carbonation.

Smells of charred wood and whiskey. The only beer I can think of that smells anything like this is a well aged old ale. A pleasant slightly oxidized alcohol + caramel aroma.

Taste is amazing. Charred wood and a smooth whiskey burn. Pleasant suiting bitterness. Somewhat thinner body. Acidic to the tongue although not from carbonation. Lots of spice coming from rye malt. Hints of citrus. Mouthfeel gets better as carbonation wears off. Really wide spectrum of balanced flavors. Quite intense and unusual.

I can see why anyone argues it's not appealing. You have to like whiskey to like this beer. Definitely a burn and booze flavor involved. But for me it works, I like it a lot.

A - Dark orange and amber color with a half inch of head. Translucent, almost ruby-like appearance.

S - Rye whiskey aroma is dominant, as it should be and it is complemented by a very slight burn from the alcohol. Some sweeter fruits come through here as well such as raisin and fig.

T - Delivered as promised, strong rye whiskey character with a strong rye bread (caraway seed) backbone. Slight alcohol burn, by nothing deterring. I expected to be overwhelmed by too much of a rye flavor, but this isn't the case; the two rye types go well together. No hop character, but a sweet malt profile to hold everything in place.

M - Spicy and warm rye aftertaste that properly tops off this full-bodied rye brew.

O - This is easily my favorite beer of the year because of its amazingness and that it promises exactly what it provides. 5's across the board.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip. Pours a reddish brown with a creamy off white head, very little lacing. Smell is vanilla, Oak, Bourbon, carmel, and leather. Taste is all of those things, vanilla and bourbon dominate, pretty mild considering what it is. Body is a little thin, plenty of carbonation, not overly dry, and very easy drinking. This solid not really familiar with the style.

Had this in a snifter at Beer Kitchen. Not very much head. A thick dark brown looking brew. Smell is sweet, malty, and rye. Upfront the taste is strong rye. Extremely bready, thick, syrupy, not much carbonation. The taste is also sweet cherries and caramel malts. The 11 percent alcohol is well hidden. If you like big semi-sweet beers and rye bread on your sandwiches you'll like it.

Drinking this one solo tonight.

I pour straight in so its got a head on it that then fades out leaves a bit of lacing but not a lot. nice sunburst color.
The aroma is a heavy dry rye note, a light white pepper and just dry.
The flavors have that spicy note you expect from a rye beer. It is the kind of spice that when implied "rye" people will like and when implied "chili" people will not like, really on the border.
There is some alcohol that pokes through because of the dryness of this one, and makes it a bit smokey, and light notes of vanilla bringing in some sweetness.
Mouthfeel is quick to fade due to the dryness.

I am indifferent to this one, going to drink the whole 750ml, but its just average. i guess i like the rye, but could go for more alcohol heat,whiskey, and maybe a little less dry, but i am strange.
