Notes / Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Great tasty barrel aged ale. The look remind me of real Apple cider from an orchard the nose is sweet whiskey with a slight Apple quality taste follows suit with an extremely pleasant sweet robust start into vanilla oak coconut and a subtle rye with a dry whiskey ending(there's an Apple cider quality in there to). Lots to be found in this brew not heavy on the barrel characteristics but that's the charm of this brew a well crafted subtle ba that isn't a punch of whiskey but a rich deep sweet and subtly flavorful rye ale. Another great boulevard offering!

2015 release, 750ml bottle. Copper in color, maybe darker, like mahogany. About one finger of foam on the head, with retention/lacing being pretty good for a 12% ABV beer. The "spicy" (still can't think of a more descriptive word) character of rye is evident on the nose. Next up is caramelized sugar. Less vanilla character than bourbon barrel-aged beers, as the aroma suggest a drier beer.

The flavor profile isn't sweet at all, contrary to what I'd expected. More than enough bitterness to balance out the flavor profile. Alcohol is barely detectable. This is just a big rye beer with a more mellow hop character, and that's fine with me. Of note is the very mellow, soft, and smooth mouthfeel, which makes this a pleasure to sip. I guess I expected a bigger, bolder flavor profile, but the quality of Rye-On-Rye can't be denied. A supercharged, yet restrained rye beer.

Amazingly complex. Release subtle dried fruit flavor as it warms in your hand
