Notes / Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into a clear glass snifter. Best by 11-2015 on back label, 2014 vintage. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Dirty dishwater amber with 1-finger of off-white head which dissipates quickly and leaves a few spots of lacing.

S: Spicy rye nose, both from spicy alcohol and herbal rye spiciness. Orange tones with candy malt sweetness, almost pilsner malt-like. Light coconut and oaky, wood aromas. Very whiskeyish aroma overall.

T: The flavor is a blast after the nice but subdued nose -- sweet caramel maltiness folds into a herbal, earthy rye spiciness, and finishes with the light oak tannins and coconut and vanilla barrel flavors. There is an undercurrent of orange citrus and honeysuckle throughout. A very unique and flavorful beer. Neither the whiskey nor the rye character nor the sweetness overwhelm -- a great balance of these with alcohol character there but not overbearing.

M: Medium body, very dry for 12% ABV, low-medium carbonation. No astringency despite the drying mildly tannic finish.

O: Rye-on-Rye is a unique drinking experience -- it melds whiskey, rye malt, and barrel character with a deft hand. I recommend drinking this beer young to get the best of all three -- my bottle is probably about 2 months in my hand and probably about 4 since bottling. Stellar beer.
