Notes / Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

From a bottle, pours as a very murky deep copper with a creamy tan head. Aroma is distinctly of rye with some indistinct spice notes. Taste is all rye and malt with some caramel and slight vanilla. Good carbonation and flavors that don't fade away. very nice.

Rye on Rye pours a dark and deep amber color with a large, very long lasting head. The aroma is filled with notes of wood and whiskey. Earthy flavors, with big hits of wood and whiskey, and a sweeter spicier end. Good body and feel. Overall, a complex, but fantastic beer.

Summer 16 - pours reddish amber, dark copper. Light ring of white foam. Oaky, rye, nose. Little cherry fruit sweetness. Strong cherry fruit taste. Astringency. Woodsy. Chewy and thick mouthfeel. Feel the burn! Very good but a sipper.

Poured into snifter glass. Dark red cherry color with floaties dispersed - possibly hops. Aromas were of cherries and some oak. Not much bourbon noted. The flavors were almost overwhelming. Rye presences was intense - almost astringent. Noted cherries, mild oak, hops and medicinal qualities as well as the rye. Started out sweet and finished sweet with the bitter hops lingering around. Almost like an American barley wine. It was quite intense and at times overwhelming. Was glad to split this bottle - it was good but not something I could finish myself.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Have had before, first review.

A great looking pour- amber, somewhat opaque, with two and a half finger head with a hard pour, tight head, lots of foamy lacing. Smell is rye, light malt, some figs and dates, yeast, light whiskey- more as it warms, vanilla, light cherries and oak, a general spiciness. The taste picks up with the Templeton Rye barrels kicking in, and the rye is still a strong presence. Also malt, oak, caramel, figs, yeast, light cherries, a little sweet. Slight hop bitterness. Smooth, a little creamy, great body.

Well blended, the rye and the Templeton barrels star. This one is a personal favorite, and it's tops for its style. Well worth a purchase.

L: bronze with plenty of flakes, sweet caramel translucency, resilient frothy rim
S: sweet molasses, with definite rye
T: rye first, smooth sweet taste, rye aftertaste goes down easy
F: smooth, medium bodied, easy for the alcohol content
Delightful shelf beer, first rye on rye, not the last
