Notes / Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

A- Pours and absolutely pitch black with a light brown head that fades rather abruptly. Admirable lacing. Not the most viscous looking stout, but appealing still.

S- Lots of plums, cherries, and dark fruits. The Belgium yeast is really put on a pedestal. Oats and coffee beans detected in the background.

T- Flavor follows nose quite well. A sweeter take on the style. Rich fruity esters, astringent hops and English style malts. A robust complexity. Finishes warm in the back of the throat.

M- Quite impressed with the feel. Creamy, yet drinkable. Fair amount of alcohol adds to the already intense complexity. Full body and appropriate, soft carbonation.

O- Certainly a different, yet welcomed, take on the style. Non-traditional. A belgium style stout of sorts. I enjoyed the twist and respect the effort here.

English malt. German hops. Belgian yeast. Isn't it ironic to see it called an American Stout? There's 12 ounces to drink, so time to dig in and slowly sip away. On to the beer:

Beer is ink black and topped with an inch of mocha colored head. The retention on top is good and it yields a show of settled lace. With one whiff of the aroma, you can get the Belgian accent. Of course, there is the standard note of faint chocolate from the malt. There's also the note of yeasty prunes, some roast, and...is that a kiss of rubber? Or some oddball aspect of the yeast?

First taste, a pleasant smokiness. It's yeasty too, though not quite Belgian Dark Ale yeasty. Quite fruity, with plums and red grapes, which compliment the smoky flavor. A slight astringency from the malt. The warmer it gets, the less astringent the beer becomes. It's full bodied, thick, with modest carbonation. For its size, the alcohol is hidden well too.

Boulevard Brewing isn't afraid to take some inspiration from across the Atlantic. Keep it up guys.
