Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

A- Dark as night (as if I couldn't guess). Kaki colored head. Very sudsy head. Tight bubbles. Very inviting!

S- Dark fruits. Dark roasted iced coffee scents. Malty. Ethyl alcohol. Funky from the belgian yeast. Really inviting.

T- First was a hit of a clean water. Then came iced coffee, roasted malts, and ethyl alcohol. Same as in the smell, there is a nice Belgian yeast character that comes out. Earthy, barnyard type taste. Some dark fruits and a earthy kind of hop spice from the German hops. Very smooth. Not too much burn at all here.
*When warmer, the fruits and the alcohol flavor is more pronounced.

M- Full mouthfeel. Not hard to drink really. Warms the bones nicely. Not real sure what else to write here.

*-This is awesome stuff. Has a nice malty, coffee-ish/dark fruit flavor from the British malts, with a slight undertone of German hoppy spice. Not a huge fan of this when warm, so I'd recommend it cool. Awesome stuff.

Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series tulip glass.

The beer is pitch black and hold a mocha colored head with great retention. Perfectly foamy lacing coats the glass in almost symmetrical patterns.

The aroma is oily black licorice, rich dark chocolate, and coffee from dark roasted malts.

The taste is silky and smooth with roasted malts, rich chocolate, and a faint black licorice. The finish is dry and maybe even chalky.

Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, silky and dry.

Overall, very rich and bitter, bringing all if the good flavors with it. Good dessert beer to take your time with because of the high ABV.
