Notes / Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

This is a re-rate after aging this beer for 22 months. It has significantly improved and I will age more.

2010 vintage. Poured from 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

Pours black with a 1 finger tan head. Big walls of lacing.

Big roast, char, chocolate

Semi sweet chocolate, roasted malts, some dark fruits.

Very smooth and creamy. Nice imperial Stout with chocolate and roast.

Poured into snifter glass. It was jet black in color with a brown thick head. The aroma gave off some coffee but not much to get worked up on. As the beer warmed up, the aroma was instantly black licorice. Maybe some faint tobacco as well.

After drinking, it sort of made me think of a tripel or a quad - must be because of the notable dark fruits in this beer. I also detected black coffee and little chocolate. It became more boozy as it warmed up. Even the aroma was boozy. The aftertaste of the beer hung around quite a while - tasted mostly dark chocolate and black coffee.

Overall the I really enjoyed three quarters of the drink. But as it warmed up, it just became a bit too boozy and the flavor just seemed to mellow out. I'd prefer drinking this just slightly chilled, not room temp. Very glad to try. It's definitely has some differences than other stouts in comparison. I liked the aroma of black licorice and the subtle flavor of dark fruits.

A - near black with a half finger of dark chocolate mahogany head. Decent lacing

S - sweet plums, rosary coffee and sugary Belgian yeast

T - sweet and roasty chocolate with lots of plum and fig sweetness. Aftertaste is rather bitter

M - medium boded and smooth. Little carbonation

O - heavy on the dark fruit sweetness. Not bad but my least favorite smokestack to date

Pours very dark with big thick three finger head. Nice big bubbles and the head lasts for a while.

Smell is rich, roasty, and robust. Lot’s of coffee on the head. Bits of coco.

Very sweet and inviting.

Mouthfeel a bit ashy.

Robust coffee flavors, as well as chocolate. Hard to pick out the alcohol. Great stout.
