Notes: Barrel Aged Wheated Imperial Stout with Columbian Coffee

Magic Drip is a rich Wheated Imperial Stout featuring pale, dark, and crystal malts, plus Magnum hops and Colombian Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee from our friends at Messenger Coffee.

The Wheated Imperial Stout was then aged from 8-18 months in various Bourbon Casks, each barrel bringing its own personality of vanilla, oak and char. Clocking in at 13.5% ABV, the end result was pure Magic Drip.

When you open and pour this beer you’ll find notes of well-rounded coffee aroma and flavor that make way for vanilla, cocoa and barrel characteristics. The fusion of the sweet and boozy Imperial Stout base alongside rich coffee and boozy bourbon casks makes for a balanced beer of rich chocolate and coffee, vanilla, whiskey, and toasted oak.

This limited release was bottled 081621, enjoy by 16Aug2023. Poured a beige film, but it's a persistent film with ringed lacing. Mild nose like a breakfast coffee. Mouthfeel is creamy and a little sticky. I don't taste the 13,5%. The flavor is "the fine Colombian, make tonight a wonderful thing." But this is Colombian coffee. Cool beans! I get a grape hint that could be barrel char.
I bought a single, but I'm going to buy another to cellar.

slammed this up in a blind taste test with KBS Espresso... noticeably more tangy in nose & taste, goes down quite smoothly.
Very comparable to my chosen competitor.

Nice job, Boulevard!

poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter. pours an inky black with dark brown edges. a thin dark khaki colored foam coats the top and leaves a thin collar around the edge of the glass. there’s chocolate espresso aromas hiding in the background of a very harsh oak and whiskey presence. detracts quite a bit from what could be. flavors of chocolate-covered espresso bean but again covered up with an extremely harsh barrel heat. it’s always tricky to get the balance between coffee and barrel in these stouts and to me the barrel presence is too much on this. perhaps that will mellow in time, but of course that nice coffee flavor will turn to peppery nonsense in the meantime as well. it’s got a nice mouthfeel to it. full enough. not the thickest stout you’ll ever try but certainly not thin. i just can’t get over the barrel presence. one positive of said barrel presence, is that it does have a very nice warming effect on the finish which makes for a nice sipper as the weather cools off. not terrible by any means, but not may favorite BA coffee stout.

L: Black. Like peering into outer space. Tan head with little lacing. Long lasting carbonation bubbles climb the sides.
S: Deep chocolate mocha with strong vanilla whiskey barrels. Pure sweet goodness. Also toasted oak on the backend.
T: Very rich chocolate mocha. Strong vanilla whiskey barrels and smoky toasted oak keeps the sweetness in check. Very balanced and addicting overall flavor.
F: Very heavy, the equivalent to mixing 3 parts chocolate syrup 1 part half&half. Very very rich. Mild carbonation. Lingering taste. Excellent craftsmanship.
O: By far the best stout I’ve had. Good thing it’s only a limited release otherwise I would weigh 300 pounds and be broke. It’s a one of a kind, and I don’t often praise desert beers. I hope Boulevard brings it back as a seasonal. Grab it before it’s gone.

It is what it claims to be: a barrel aged imperial stout. It’s rather aggressive fresh, in its coffee and barrel notes, but it’s a solid drink. This might benefit from a year or two on a shelf to calm itself a bit. Good price point, nice beer.

Pours an effervescent ebony with a thumb+ of mocha colored head. Okay lacing & lesser head retention

S: Coffee, figs, dark cherry, raisins

T: Boozey coffee with tart cherry mixed in, plus some raw barrel/dryness up front. Some caramel cuts through the coffee & a little red grape, plus a little dark chocolate as this warms. Dark chocolate, sweet cherry chocolates, a little barrel rawness/ dryness, plus figs in the finish

MF: Chewy, moderate carbonation, warming

Awesome release from one of the Regional Stalwarts. They do strong beer well. This is a sipper the ABV is felt, plus a lot of complexity

This is reminding me of Sunday Morning Stout somewhat, because of the price and how robustly, wonderfully abrasive this is.

The coffee notes are roasty, lightly charred, slightly smokey, and very potent, building in intensity throughout. There is a fudge-y cake batter note towards the back end. Sweet bourbon up front, tingly oak and vanilla toward the finish.

The wheat fills the body out nicely and softens the bitter elements a bit. This all comes together extremely well, excellent price point too!

Poured a 12 oz bottle into a 10oz tulip glass. Pours a black as night with a small dark brown ring as a head. Aroma is of malts, bourbon, coffee, vanilla and dark fruits (plum). Taste is nice blend of bourbon, coffee and vanilla. The taste is a bit sweet with a coffee finish. The alcohol (13.5%) does not come through, so this could sneak up quickly. The mouthfeel is a bit slick on the tongue, but not offensive. Going to keep a 4 pack in cellar as I'm sure this will lose a bit of the sweetness and smooth out a bit.
Not a wheat beer fan, but seems to soften this stout just a bit. Very good beer, worth a taste

This brew, from a twelve ounce bottle, is an utterly thick, black, and syrup-like. Thin tan head. The aroma is of espresso, booze, and wood. The taste is intense…biting bitterness, enveloping warmth, and fleeting sweetness. It takes a sip or two to accelerate to the intensity, but that patience pays off…the flavors meld very well. I get coffee, roasted malts, and lots of interesting combinations. Full, rich, thick, and hefty. Incredible.

So good on a chilled autumn evening. Boulevard never disappoints. Jet black, great thick mouthful. Sweet but not clowingly so. Dominant coffee - forward, during and after. But why not KC Roasterie?
