Boulevard Five Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, 13.3% ABV. Pours black and thick with a quarter-finger medium brown head that left decent lacing. Nose is sweet chocolate, vanilla, moleasses, dark fruit, and bourbon. Taste follows, plus roast malt, moderately sweet, slightly bitter. Thick and smooth mouthfeel, slightly dry, sticky lips. Overall world-class. As complex as Abyss, but better.

Look: dark brown, light head that quickly dissapates
Smell: oaky, bourbon comes through pleasantly, some malty chocolate in their as well
Taste: sweet, malt, roasty, very light dark fruit,
Feel: good full body, light carbonation
Overall: Just a very solid bourbon barrel stout. No crazy notes, well balanced. When you want a coke, it should taste like coca-cola and the baseline you expect for a BBA stout is something like this.

Brewer’s Choice 2021 5 Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout from Boulevard Brewing. 12 oz bottle from a mixed six-pack $23.00 (Including tax), $0.319/oz. Stored on room temperature shelf in store and at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 1/4/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on rear of label “PLEASE ENJOY BY: 20SEP23”. Served at 56.1 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 60.0 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), nearly opaque.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, still opaque with no penetration at the edges.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5 cm, aggressive center pour), initially burnt umber but lightening to golden brown, slowly diminishing to leave a 0.8 to 1.0 cm crown and cap. The crown is evenly supplemented by effervescence. Crown and cap last the entire glass but never produce lacing.
Lacing – Fair. A tight, narrow band of tiny bubbles drags along as the level drops.
Aroma – 4.25 – Light aroma of roasted malt and cocoa, with warm bourbon overtones. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins slightly sweet with a weak alcohol burn. No hops, no yeast. Ethanol (13.3% ABV, as marked on container) is not hidden but is attenuated by the sweet bourbon. Some chocolate comes through the roasted malt. Overall, pretty basic flavors but delicious – no deep thoughts necessary. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4.25 – Full, approaching creamy, soft caressing carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Simple taste but good. Highly quaffable and potentially deadly when the 13.3 % ABV kicks in. Alcohol is obvious only in subsequent belches.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a viscous black color with a foamy one-finger khaki head that eventually reduces to a ring

S- heavy barrel aromas, with sharp wet oak, barrel juice, caramel, vanilla and coconut. Undertones of chocolate, char, toffee and dried figs

T- initial taste follows the nose with huge barrel notes; bourbon, wet oak, caramel, vanilla and a hint of coconut. The base beer gives notes of rich chocolate, marshmallow, charred malt, figs and raisins. The finish gives more bourbon barrel that continues into the linger

O- rich, thick and bold, well done

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that turns chewy into a velvety finish

Poured from a bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a nearly pitch-black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather fast, leaving a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Upon pouring the brew looks super thick, boarding on the line of a motor oil like appearance.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is massive of a bourbon and dark roasted malt smell. Mixed with these aromas comes a good deal of must and char as well as some nice notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. Along with these aromas some a decent showing of sweet smells, with cherry, plum and raisin dark fruit smells being complimented by brown sugar, molasses, and toffee aromas. Other notes of crème and wood are there as well, overall, producing a nice robust and rich aroma.
Taste - The taste begins with a very thick and sweet roasted malt flavor. The sweet is heavy of brown sugar, molasses, caramel, prune, raisin, and plum with the roasted flavors being of a charred and toasted malt mixed with milk and dark chocolate and some lighter coffee. As the taste moves forward the bourbon starts to become known, starting off lighter, but ramping up in intensity as the taste moves forward. At the same time the sweet gets sweeter, while the roastiness gets lighter. All the while, some char and leather flavors also come to the tongue. With some oak and vanilla coming in more toward the final moments of the taste on the scene, a rather thick, roasty, warming, and very sweet taste is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – Super syrupy and thick with a carbonation level that is very low. Almost like drinking maple syrup in nature. OK for the huge rich flavors, but on the boarder of being a bit too thick for my liking.
Overall – A very flavorful brew overall. Very sweet and thick.

Poured jet black with a minimal tan head that disappeared quickly.

Tasted the dark roasted malt and savory dark fruits and treacle right away with dark chocolate and the barrel/booze playing along. Nice and dry with a wonderful lingering aftertaste. Nicely done.

Boulevard is probably the best bargain in barrels. This is a pretty straight forward, chocolatey, decadent barrel aged stout. Not many layers, not much nuance, but extremely rich and satisfying. The body is incredibly full.

Look. Third time's the charm? No, sometimes, it's just not. This I swear is the same beer, different bottle, as the first two in this, yes, value priced, Boulevard mix a six, Look, twice, years ago, Boulevard brewed Parabola for Firestone Walker, and, it was amazing. But, honestly, read my review (exact scores), for the first two of this six. Same beer, almost exactly. Great value buy for the barrel, and potency, but not, for the beer. Good, not great.

Pours a dark brown to black color with a half finger of tan head. The nose has notes of bourbon and smoke. The flavor has combined notes of molasses and bourbon. It is not too sweet, but it gets close to that line. The mouthfeel is quite sticky.

Mixed six pack with three different barrel aged beers? Great! And from one of the more underrated programs in the country. 12 oz. bottle to drown my frozen sorrows; it was 70 degrees warmer where I woke up this morning.

Black beer with minimal mocha head that falls quickly to a late-stage Connery ring on the edge of the pond. Nose is charred, smoky wood limned in a touch of barrel & malt.

Five hits the ad copy on the head. Plenty of sweetness up front to the point that it feels like sucrose or maple or some other sugar delivery system was added to the beer; I guess it’s just in the malts. Bourbon truck backs up & dumps a good load on the palate. Smaller pieces of char, dark chocolate, pumpernickel toast with a slight bitterness. Big ABV is well hidden but apparent in the need for handrails; thick but this is no Donut Shop stout. I could put crank the full bucket up from the well out in the back forty & drink it clean of this stuff.

Boulevard barreled this hanging curve up. Nothing unique just a superbly executed, excellent barrel aged stout. Looking forward to the others from the six pack.

12oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It left minimal lacing on the glass. It smelled of bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate, toffee and rich molasses. It tasted of bourbon, charred oak, dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla and booziness.

these Blvr+D sets are always on my radar each year, and this is my first sampling out of the new edition. Pours pitch dark and oily, with a minimal chocolate milk-ish head & lingering level ring, modest but cute lacing. Nose is of scrumptious dessert sweetness and roasted malt, some plums or prunes, maybe a little detectable burn from the barrel. Taste is very reminiscent of the brewer's sweet stout from a prior release, not sure if any of the blends were lactose?... Tangy and jelly-like on the tongue with just a tinge of a burn to keep things nice & complex. Sweet and satisfying swallow. Aftertaste like a fine black licorice.

Overall enjoyment from this Blvd fan. A couple vessels of each variant will surely be joining the rest of the series alumni remaining in my collection/stash.

A - Black colored pour with dense caramel colored lacing and lots of legs when the glass is swirled. The beer oozes down the sides of the glass.

S - Bourbon, char, delicate oak, light chocolate roast, and alcohol.

T - Chocolate char, oak char, Bourbon, roasted malt, vanilla, and finishes on the sweeter side with a lingering chocolate/oak/bourbon char. Bourbon and oak linger on the palate with chocolate roasty char thrown in the mix.

M - Thick mouthfeel that's silky soft and sugary sticky on the lips with some warming on the way down the pie hole.

O - This is a really nice barrel aged stout and highgly recommended.

Enjoy by 9/20/23. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours black; small dark khaki head that fades leaving decent retention and lacing. Looks very nice.

The aromas have lots of chocolate blended with bourbon. Some vanilla frosting. Some caramel. Malts are there.

The flavors follow the nose. More chocolate leading the way, especially milk chocolate. More caramel. Lots of tobacco. There's a decent amount of dark fruits in the mix. The bourbon isn't shy and blends harmoniously with everything. There's a nice little sweetness to this one, but it's definitely not cloyingly sweet or anything like that. Low bitterness. Subtle spiciness. Solid malt backbone. Subtle warmth in the finish.

Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied with moderate to low carbonation. It's creamy, velvety, fluffy and smooth. It's slightly sticky as well.

This is a great barrel-aged stout. It's very bold while remaining restrained at the same time. It doesn't come off as super flashy, but it's simply well executed. It's no shocker that Boulevard made a great barrel-aged stout. The craftsmanship is on point per usual. Well done.

Pours black with a still look. Head rises to only half a finger of mocha foam before bubbling away. Aroma is roasty, toasty, nutty, and caramely malts. Brandy, whiskey, char, and oak all work their way towards the front as the rotating display spins through. Chocolate, caramel, and molasses add some sweetness. Flavor profile is roasty, toasty, and caramely malts with hearty whiskey and brandy notes. It never dips into "hot", but features several different liquors. Chocolate, caramel, toffee, and molasses add varying levels of sweetness throughout the profile. Sweetness is just enough to counteract the on-going heat, creating balance. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a creamy texture that carries grit around the edges. Overall, a hearty stout that does well to showcase different liquors, all the while, remaining balanced.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 12oz bottle.

Pours pitch black with a small tan and moderate lacing.

Smells of toasted malt, chocolate, plums and light bourbon.

Tastes of sweet toasted malt, chocolate and plums with a slightly bitter and alcohol warm finish.

Heavy body with very light carbonation. Lush, smooth and syrupy mouthfeel.

This is a powerful, flavorful sipper. It is a bit heavier and less sweet than the brewer's other 2021 BC offerings.

Pours thick and effervescent mahogany with a pinky cocoa colored head. Some lacing & head retention

S: Dark chocolate, dark fruit, vanilla & a little barrel. Dark fruit dominates as this warms

T: A little bit of charred grain, dryness, dried plum, a touch of coffee & Baker's Chocolate up front, a touch of pine too. A little vanilla, dark fruit, carob & charred grain as this warms, some raw barrel oakyness as well. Finishes with some charred grain, vanilla & just a kiss of Bourbon

MF: Medium/heavy body, slight carbonation, warming

Solid take on a BA Imp Stout, drinks like its ABV
