Notes / Commercial Description:
With roots in two of today's most popular brewing styles, 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer is the result of careful cultivation by our brewers and cellarmen. Their efforts to craft a hybrid yielded a bumper crop of flavor; a delightfully distinctive ale with the aroma of an IPA and the refreshing taste of a wheat beer.

Out of a 12 ounce bottle that was purchased at the brewery itself, but consumed at home, on to the beer:

An inch of head clings above this hazy yellow ale, while spotty lace dots the glass. Hoppy wheat indeed, as the aromas of orange zest and zesty grass prepares me for a hop smackdown. It tastes just as that. Good squeezes of citrus to go along with tangerine, orange , and also grass for something different. While the body is light, the crisp bubbles bring a pleasant sting.

Is this the Midwest's answer to Fortunate Islands? If so, then it is a very good response.

Best by 11/24/2016.

A: Did the beer swirl mandatory for wheat beers. Cloudy and yellow appearance. Finger and a half of pillowy/creamy white head that collapses in on itself. Carbonation is moderate/high, with small bubbles running to the surface at a medium pace.

S: New world hoppy. Tropical and mandarin. Malt is more malt than grain, with the sweeter tones intermingling with the orange notes to form a vague creamsickle note. Reminds me a bit of a toned down Duet.

T: Orange jumps out. Slightly sweetened mandarin mixes with the bready sweetness and again we're looking at dreamsickle notes. Mid palate cleans out and tropical fruitiness pops a bit more to the forefront. Finish is soft to the touch, with a bit of residual sweetness.

M: Soft and pillowy like a wheat with a fair price of carbonation/acidity on the palate after each sip. Refreshing and easily crushable.

O: Greater than the sum of its parts. This is my favorite Boulevard beer to date. It's the wheat with a slight turbo charge. Retains good hop character with very little bitterness. A+ basically my favorite session IPA.

L: Hazy yellow color, can barely see through it. Developed an almost 1 inch foamy head with good retention down to the last drop.

S: Very hoppy and floral smell. Good for some but I'm not a fan of very hoppy beers.

T: Great taste. A little bit of citrus and a little bit of hoppy/floral flavor but without the bitter "I just drank a flower" aftertaste that I hate about many pale ales. Maybe the wheat mellows out that taste, but whatever it is, it works very well.

F: Very refreshing, especially on a hot day.

O: Very good go-to beer for the summer time. It seems to have everything I like about pale ales and none of the downfalls that most pale ales have for me.

I had this on draught in a bar. It poured a hazy golden straw color with one finger of fluffy, egg-white colored head and extensive lacing. Lots of citrus on the nose: lemon peel, orange, wheat, and a whiff of pine. The taste features wheat with lemon, orange, and a hint of honey, followed by just a touch of hops. It's light, refreshing, and easy to drink with a moderate ABV of 5.5% This ale is well-crafted and a great summertime beer. It's hard to drink just one.

Bottle BB 7/2/16. Hefeweizen glass.

A: pours an initially pale straw with 3 fingers fluffy white head; pouring the sediment in Tutsi things a milky yellow, but still transparent enough to see streams of carbonation flowing up. Settles down to a 1 finger foamy cap that retains very well. Lacing is very good.

S: blast of a bright, sweet, navel orange. Out of control citrus. A little grainy wheat, but just oozes citrus.

T: solid wheaty arrival, a little bubblegum, a little citrus, lingering citrus candy and light grapefruit peel. Hoppy, but never bitter. Can't be more than 15 IBUs.

M: heavier side of midweight, well carbonated, but the bubbles are small so it does not feel really carbonated; very clean finish; among the cleanest finishing wheat beers I've had.

O: this is a real winner. Very full-flavored and full bodied for a summer beer, but quite complex. Completely six-pack worthy.
