Notes: Combining Boulevard’s expertise at making Belgian-style witbiers with Deschutes’ skill at brewing hop-forward ales, this beer puts a new spin on the idea of collaborative brewing. Working from a single recipe, brewmasters Steven Pauwels of Boulevard and Larry Sidor of Deschutes have produced two separate beers, more than 1,600 miles apart.

Despite the beer’s shared recipe, each of the two versions possess a unique identity, reflected in their naming and packaging. Boulevard’s half of the equation, christened Collaboration #2, is available throughout our selling region in both 750mL bottles and in kegs. Bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland. Despite its proximity to Deschutes, this is actually the Boulevard version.

Pours a really lovely bright but hazed golden yellow colour. The haze adds a lovely sheen and sparkle to the body of the beer. Head is firm, fine and lovely and frothy, but mild and light at the same time, leaving about as much residue as a cloud. Very little lacing, and very little weight to the head itself. It really looks very good indeed, though.

Nose is clear and bright, but somewhat grassy, leaving a slightly prickly vegetative note in the aroma. There's a subtle hint of seawater, or perhaps chlorine to it too, not in a bad way, but in a fresh, slightly too eager brightness kind of way. Perhaps a dot of pepper to it as well, something that gives it something slightly spicy. It's OK, but I was expecting something a little bit more full and better integrated.

Taste is clear and bright, with a brusque, peppery note on the back. Light leafy hoppiness pervades throughout, but I think there must be a good dash of the wit botanicals in here as well: there's certainly an insidious spicy character that drifts through. The 7.5% ABV is hidden pretty well, but there could be a dash more body to support the beer overall. Feel is a little light as a result.

Overall. This is decent stuff. It's a nicely put together White IPA which leans a little heavily on the White, while maintaining some of the aggression of an IPA. I'm probably not the biggest fan, but I'm a fan nonetheless. But just in fair weather.

Pours clear light yellow/golden with soda carbonation under a huge fluffy head that lingers. Near the bottom, lots of yeast sediment gets stirred up and fogs the beer to a wheaty yellow. Funky aroma: leather and bready yeast. Some flowery hops. Tangy smelling.

Sharp tang and first followed by sourdough and wheaty corriander and clove. Rich layers of flavor: complex. Finishes dry and bitter, like an IPA should. Funny shift from sweet/tart initial taste to long, lingering, drying finish and cutthroat bitterness. Lovely.

A wonderful hybrid and collaboration defying style and tradition. Bottle labeled best by 2-2012 (batch: 2011-4).

Ordered this bottle from the Wine & Cheese Shop. Served in a Russian River "TION" goblet.

Pours a slightly hazed golden color with a strong yellow tint. Single finger white head falls into a nice thin collar. The nose brings a great burst of coriander, orange peel, and a good dosing of lemon grass. Really nice notes pull together into what appears to be a good saison. Adding the nice floral and citrus hops to that really hits a high level. Flavor isn't quite as integrated and the hops come together and the lemongrass and sage come together and overshadow a few other things. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Slight chewiness, though not much. Really fantastic beer. Great concept and beautifully executed. Certainly not for everyone, but it hit the spot for me.

Poured from 750ml corked and caged bottle into Tulip.

A. Poured a not surprising well carbonated 3 fingers of big bubbled head. Moderately thick lacing. Decent retention. Color is cloudy light golden yelllow.

S. Has a lot of Wit beer smells going on. Yeast, lemon, citrus, sweet pale malt. Has a nice hop aroma and bitterness in the smell with some floral citrus hop smell. Very unique smelling beer.

T. Taste is a lot like the smell. A lot of classic Wit flavors of yeast, lemon, pale malt, clove, spices. This is all balanced against a nice hop bitterness. Definitely get some white pepper flavor in the finish. Nice contrast between sweet and bitter flavors. A lot going on in the flavor of this beer.

M. Medium bodied. Well carbonated. Some lingering bitterness and sweetness.

O. This is a unique beer, but what else would you expect from a collaboration of great brewers. I don't know that I would label this a Belgian IPA. It might transcend categories, but Belgian IPA does not fit this beer for me. It might best be described as Gumballhead's bigger brother. Whatever you label it, this is a good beer. Definitely unique, but one that you should seek out and try.

Pale yellow color that's hazy with some small floaters. The head is uber-agressive and I have to stop my pour numerous times to let the beer catch up.

The smell is minty with citrus notes of lemon and orange. There's a corriander spice.

The taste resembles a wit much more than any kind of IPA. Corriander spice, yeast, and a minty finish. The light orange notes are the only hop aspect of this.

Mouthfeel is thin but works well for a wit... wait, this is an IPA, or is it? Anyway, it is light and thin, but in context with the flavors it works. In context of an IPA, not so much.

A good beer but I was let down from an "IPA" point of view. For a wit, very good. I guess it's a decent beer with an identity crisis.

Presentation: 750 ml brown bottle, corked and caged, split with my wife into two Chimay goblets.

Appearance: Hazy straw-colored brew with a creamy stark white cap with great retention. Gorgeous sheets of lacing. A bit of yeasty business in suspension, but that's probably my fault.

Smell: Definitely more IPA than witbier, though this is one of the most deliciously citrusy/tropical fruity IPAs I've ever had. Nothing in the aromas from the malt, and though there's definitely a ghost of something dark and herbal underneath everything else, had I not known that sage was used in this brew, I would have never picked it out. Citrus fruit aromas are bright, pointed, and just about leap out of the glass.

Taste: I tasted it, looked at my wife, and said 'well that's damn bizzare'. And so it is. At first it's almost like it's going to be a normal IPA; you get a hit of citrusy hoppy goodness (though not as much as the aromas suggest, the good boys at Boulevard dry-hopped the living hell out of this beer), but then WHAM, you're hit by a wall of something darkly herbal, and now you actually get a bit of the sage character. Dry, pungent, and slightly wild, just like the herb that grows in your back garaden. Medium bitterness, not over-the-top by any means. I'm really not getting much witbier here at all...a ghost of coriander and perhaps orange peel, but you have to look for it. Herbal, bitter finish stays on the tongue. Wow, the sage really grows throughout the time it takes to drink this; at first, it's barely noticeable, by the end...wow.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full

Conclusion: Collaboration no. 1 (w/the brewer from Orval) was excellent, and what made it so great was the fact that the brewers did something straightforward and did it very, very well. You could tell that their recipe and process were just about perfect to get a beer that was so understated and yet so great. Collaboration no. 2 goes the opposite way. It's got a ton of stuff going on, and it's definitely not as easy to like as the first brew. It's great to see Boulevard really taking two widely different approaches here, it really speaks to their breadth of vision and creativity. This beer is tasty, don't get me wrong. It's also really (really) unique. That being said, I don't think I'd buy another bottle. The exception is this...the more I drink this, the more I think that this beer might be the PERFECT dinner beer at Thanksgiving. The cleansing, refreshing citrus, the sage (a strong ingredient in our favorite stuffing recipe) and the crisp bitterness would go wonderfully with turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, etc. Then bring out the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale to go with dessert. Sigh: sometimes living in MO is completely worth it.

750mL bottle served into a tulip glass

Pours a cloudy citrine yellow color. Maybe cloudy is a little strong. It's got a moderate haze, which I'm guessing is a product of both the hops and yeast. The head is not the majestic column of foam that I'm used to from Boulevard Smokestack Series beers. The cork was tremendously easy to pop; does that have anything to do with it? Regardless, the 1.5 fingers of sterling white head were mostly large bubbles. The foam doesn't stick around for very long. It's a good looking beer but not up to normal BLVD standards.

The first whiff of this beer is All Wit Everything, but the second smell reveals lots of wrinkles and complexities. There's a solid Witbier base here, plenty of coriander and orange zest. But before you smell the hops you smell the sage. There's a ton of herbs here. The bottle mentions specifically that sage and lemongrass were used in brewing this beer, and you get a whole lot of both. Some white flower notes come out too, and some generic perfume smells. The hops are somewhat masked here by the herbal aromas. You get fleeting ghosts of grapefruit or lemon, but the hops mostly seem content in harmonizing with the herbs.

Here's what this beer gets wrong: the sage takes away the oomph from the hops. For a beer that is ostensibly an IPA, this is something of a fault. But I am not inclined to dock the beer points for this, because whatever this beer is it tastes great. This is pungently herbaceous. An entire garden's worth of sage and lemongrass and coriander and petunia flowers greet the nose. The hop presence here is keen to sit back and harmonize with the herbs. I know that the brewers intended the herbs to be what links the Witbier spices with the hop flavors, but in practice the hops only amplify the herbs and spices. But all this herbaceousness is held in check by the nearly vanilla sweet malt bill, and the Belgian yeast that provides white peppercorn flavors for days. This beer is green as all Hell, and it is refreshing for those that enjoy herbal flavors.

The mouthfeel is a masterful balance of carbonation and heft. This isn't a huge beer, and it certainly isn't an East Coast sweetness bomb as far as IPAs go, but the body is nice and full; creamy. The moderately dry finish helps to balance the size too. Overall, this strange beer is one of the better beers I've had this year. Again, you have to like sage, lemongrass, and coriander to really love this beer. I heard that Steven Pauwels, the brewmaster for Boulevard, thought that this beer had too much sage in it. I can see that, and I look forward to trading for Deschutes' Conflux #2 to see what tweaks were made in the second brew of this recipe. As is, this is a unique beer that fully expresses that Belgian sense of experimentation. I'm glad that I have another bottle.

Caged and corked 750 mL bottle poured into chalice.

A: Bright, hazy vibrant orange with a fairly thin, yet frothy, white head with decent retention.

S: Smells of musty Belgian yeast with lemon, grass, and a bit of hops.

T: Taste is excellent. The lemon, herb, and grass flavors come through really nicely. There are nice Belgian yeast notes present throughout, as well a nice musty quality. Finishes slightly bitter and spicy.

M: Mouthfeel is also Belgian. Creamy, medium-bodied. The tiny bubbles of carbonation bring the taste buds alive. The beer cascades through the mouth and down the throat effortlessly.

O: A great Belgian IPA that definitely competes with the big hitters of the style. Instead of dumping a bunch of hops into a tripel, creating a huge Tripel DIPA, this beer tastes like a really good BSPA with slight hoppy notes that add complexity.

Definite winner for sure from Boulevard and Deschutes. These guys know their Belgians.

750ml bottle poured into a big snifter

Pours clear golden with a huge head, fades pretty quickly leaving lots of lacing. Very active carbonation. Smell is fruity, belgian-y, yeasty. Some spicy hops.

Taste is somewhat sour, pretty funky, nice crisp hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel is thin and a little oily. Overall, this is pretty good.

Poured into a large snifter, also my first experience of any kind with Deschutes

Appearance- Slightly hazy golden yellow with a large frothy white head. Great retention with some nice lacing. Looks exactly how you would expect a wit/ipa combo to look.

Smell- Citrus hops first, lemon and grapefruit. Under that are your Belgian notes, coriander, slight pepper, orange peel. Nice underlying Belgian yeast.

Taste- Belgian notes are definitely noticed first. Coriander and orange peel again, distinct lemongrass, there is some other spices too, that I can’t pinpoint. Which leads to the hoppy bitter ipa finish. Definitely on the fruity side, grapefruit, pineapple, subtle orange, and lemon again. I really wonder if sorachi ace hops are used in this, because there is a ton of lemon flavor going on. The linger is a nice blend of Belgian yeast and slightly bitter lemon.

Mouthfeel- Smooth and creamy. ABV’s hid very well. Refreshing. Goes down very easy.

Overall- Though not a true Belgian IPA, finally a hoppy Belgian beer that I am finally enjoying! Great execution by the two brewers, I am always extra happy when a collaboration beer turns out this good. The whole is greater than the sum of its part on this one.

A - Cloudy golden orange body with a 3 finger white head. Pretty good lacing left behind as well.

S - Clove and coriander, musty Belgian yeast, confectioner sugar, oranges, herbal hops.

T - Lemon and minty herbal hops followed by a creamy orange flavor. Clove, and coriander accent the chewy yeasty center. Sweet tropical fruit bleed through close to the peppery finish.

M - Soft and delicate at first then moves to a peppery finish. Full bodied.

Boulevard loves the citrus when it comes to this family of styles and it works well here. Solid amount of spice and plenty of herbal and tropical flavors running through the yeast and malt.

Pulled this out for a friend who wanted to try something "exotic." A witbier-IPA hybrid seemed like a good fit. Batch 2011-2. Drank it July 22, reviewed from notes.

Pours a medium golden-yellow with a big fluffy white head. Great retention and good lacing. Big pillowy fluffy head. Very very pretty beer.

Smell is all about Belgian white, with strong yeast aromas, cloves, other spices. A really full smell, with that characteristic Belgian yeast punch. Some fruity hops in the background. Yeast-forward; smells like a witbier with some hops.

Taste is full of strong pungent yeast character, but with a hop punch that comes through late and brings nice tangy and bitter flavors. Smooth transition between the spicy yeast (coriander and clove). Has a nice freshness, with grassy hops and vegetable flavors. Light, but complex and flavorful. Finish is slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel is light-bodied with good carbonation. Fairly thin, with a nice persistent finish.

A fantastic blend of Belgian yeast and hoppy IPA. The addition of the spices and the vegetable flavors only make it better. All of the elements blend together quite well. This is just plain delicious.

Poured into Duvel tulip...

A: pours a fluffy white head of foam with a hazy yellow gold body with quite a few chunks of sediment. settles very slow leaving thick belgian lace.

S: solid hoppiness is the first thing noticed, giving this one a strong citrus peel aroma. delving deeper into this intoxicating aroma, you will find the characteristics of the wit bier style: coriander, juicy orange peel, and white pepper. this is all back by a malt aroma akin to a bakery.

T: a juicy-sweet fruit flavor hits the tongue first, with the hops slowly taking their effect on the taste buds becoming more and more spicy and bitter, and the breadsy malt stays along for the ride. everything is in great balance here, making it seem more like a centuries-old belgian golden ale recipe. The fruity, citrus-like hops work great with the orange-peel and coriander spiced wit. mmmazing!

M: smooth as silk. it has a medium-full body with the velvety texture of a top notch wheat yet it fades into that spicy, peppery texture of a top notch ipa.

Overall, great collaboration on a collaboration. I haven't been as impressed with the belgian-ipa style as i am with this one (Belgica from Great Divide being so-so, and Cali Belgique being pretty good). The hops are there but never become overwhelming. Instant summer classic and I would like to see this added to atleast a seasonal rotaion.

big thanks to big tom for bringing this to our last tasting!

750ml cork and caged bottled poured into a snifter. served side by side with the deschutes version.

pours out a pale golden color, maybe yellowish, pretty cloudy, nice looking pure white head.

a little bit of dank, spicey hops, some lemony citrus, and a phenoly belgian yeast.

again, slightly dank lemony citrus hops, some nice spice whether it be from the hops or yeast, phenols, a touch of clove.

somewhat of a lightness like you would find in a wit, but overall a medium body. some bitterness lingers, maybe could use a bit more.

a nice hybrid style pulled off very nicely. i could drink this again, but i wouldnt really seek out another bottle. most of the people i was with thought the deschutes was a little better, i personally would say this one was better, but they are both so very similar its really hard to tell.
