Notes / Commercial Description:
Dubbel is a beer style developed by Belgian Trappists in the Middle Ages, part of a naming convention that also includes the lighter single and stronger trippel. All well and good, you say, but what's this “Nommo” business? Well, the Nommo are ancestral spirits worshipped by the Dogon tribe of the West African nation of Mali. The name is derived from a Dogon word meaning “to make one drink.” No, really. Nommo usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Seeing a trend here? Maybe it's farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting.

It's a very pretty beer. Dark brown in color, it's very cloudy. Even against a light, it remains dark. the head brings the darkness together with a bright white gathering of bubbles. While the head falls relatively quickly, the bubbles never fully dissipate. Each swirl gives the head a second wind and leaves the faintest of lacing behind.

I'd like a bit more aggression in the nose. When first popped, you can't pick up anything; though as it warms, raisin, figs and the tiniest scent of cinnamon arises.

Very Belgian in taste. Dark fruits and spices catch each taste bud. The cinnamon is very prevalent, but never goes overboard. The beer very closely matches other Belgians in taste. It's not quite spot on for the top rung of beers, but it's in the conversation.

Plenty of complexity. A full-bodied beer, it starts off earthy, but sweet. The sweetness immediately gives way to a spicy, fruity, tangy feel that never fully goes away. From mid-sip, the earthy feel returns leading to a tangy, dry finish.

I like this beer a lot. It's nice to see that some American micros are living in the same neighborhoods as the masters in Belgian when it comes to some styles of beer. This is simple to drink, has great European flavor, and the alcohol is well-hidden.

Sampled from a 750ml bottle purchased at Triangle Wine in Morrisville, NC.

A - Amber with good clarity and a moderate beige head. The foam coats the glass nicely.

S - A mix of brown sugar, plums, molasses, cocoa with a hint of root beer.

T - A nice mix of sugars and dark fruits but not especially complex.

M - A little thin with a fine carbonation.

O - A decent American brewed dubbel for such a tough style to pull off well.
