Notes / Commercial Description:
Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir or the two locations. Beginning with a grain bill of pale malt, amber malt, and both malted and unmalted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and then barrel aged for nearly three months.

the first real dark wild ive had, great earthy sour, pouring a thinner black color with ring lacing after all the tan fizz settles down. a unique grain profile is immediately evident, dark grains maybe even wheat and rye, but definitely a good dose of dark roasty barley. funky yeast too, not super sour, but more saison style. whiskey barrel leaves a boozy sweetness. there is a lot more yeasty funk in taste than smell, with some acidic sour notes cutting the heavy mineral roastiness and nuttiness of the grain. more and more sour as it warms, with well hidden abv and subtle soil and organic elements making it dry and dusty on the palate. effervescent feel makes it pop, lighter than it looks and smells, and whiskey charcoal and sourness stays on my tongue after the swallow. pleasantly dark and complex, a unique wild ale collaboration i would like to age for awhile and see how it develops.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, best before 02-2015. Served in a tulip, the beer pours dark brown with a couple inch light tan head that sticks around for a very long time. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like sweet and tart dark fruit, dark bread, oak, leather and some vanilla. It tastes like tart and sweet dark fruit (cherries, red grapes, plums, blackberries), oak/wood, brett, earth and a bit of vinegar. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it has high but soft carbonation so it's not hard to drink. I think Terra Incognita is a solid brew, and I'm glad I tried this. But at $21.99 a bottle, I'll pass the next time I see it.

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark brown-amber body with an initially fluffy, light beige head.

Smell: Incognita has a bit of a Flanders vibe going on. Acetic and wild infused amber malts, chocolate, modest roast, toast. Barrel aging characteristics are present but not overbearing. Light, lightly spoiled fruitiness.

Taste: Starts sweet, but not overly so, with roast and cola, as well as light chocolate and caramel. Toast noted. A little herb hit of menthol. Acetic quality throughout, a skosh vinegary. Dark fruit notes. Good inclusion of well-integrated whiskey character. Dries out at a comfortable pace. Light fruitiness and a drip of rose water weaves in and out of the finish.

Mouthfeel: A notch beyond medium-bodied. Fluffy, full carbonation.

Overall: I quite enjoyed it.
