Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States

Style: American Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.30%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Neighbors for nearly twenty years, Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie share a passion for making extraordinary beverages. In Coffee Ale, our two celebrated brewing traditions come together in a long-awaited collaboration. Ethiopian Sidamo from Africa’s Great Rift Valley has been carefully blended with rye, oats, and malted barley, and spiced with Perle and Styrian Golding hops. The delightfully fragrant beer presents a glowing, tawny-amber hue. The clean, crisp acidity of the air-roasted coffee mingles with malt on the palate, lingering faintly in a subtly sweet finish.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, Batch 2013-4, best by 10-2013. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours a dark reddish/brown color with about an inch and a half tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Not surprisingly, the aroma is mostly coffee. There's also roasted malt, nuts, vanilla and bittersweet chocolate noticeable. It tastes like coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and surprisingly a bit of citrus. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a little creamy and slick with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this coffee brew, definitely worth a try. $12.99 a bottle.

Bottled 2/13; best by 10/13

A non-stout coffe ale? Gimme!

A: This sucker was all head and carbonation, however perhaps I should have let it breathe for a bit. Pretty much dark brown, caramel in color, with suspect cloudiness, and a super-duper mocha head.

S: Had pretty much a sort of caramel coffee, or toffee flair overall, with an over nose of steeped grains. Strong malt presence. Good.

T : A bit lighter in body that I expect, but still good. The word of the day on this one is most definitely "toffee." Nothing is really wrong here, but nothing mind-blowing either.

M: Ridiculous carbonation for sure... bordering on whipped topping in a bottle even. I've gotta admit though that that kinda worked in a strange way. I liked the dialed down bitterness.

O: Lots of great reviews on this one on here. To each his or her own, I guess.

Best by 10/2013. So happy to see this and other Boulevard beers popping up in California. Pours a purple-brown color with quite a bit of deep red. You can slightly see through it when held up to light. Very large, light-tan head with a hint of yellow that goes down very slowly. Scent is quite interesting...very heavy on the coffee, but not what you normally expect from Coffee Stouts/Porters...which is what I'm used to. Slightly acidic nose with some green apple and orange...some citrus. As it warms, there is a lot of citrus. Mellow hoppiness with a hint of booze. The coffee is the main aroma here, but there is a lot more going on. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and highly carbonated. Drinkability is fairly high. Overall, this beer is in a league of its own. Most coffee beers are in the form of stouts and porters...not this one. This one has somewhat of a Belgian strong ale characteristic to it...along the lines of a Dubbel (hence the green apple and whatnot), yet maintaing a heavy coffee profile. Very unique beer, and delicious to boot. High ABV is well-hidden.

Served slightly chilled into a pint glass.

Pours dark cloudy brown, a lot like coffee with cream, go figure. Moderate surface layer with light lacing.

Aroma is all about dark roasted coffee.

Flavors are much more complex than the nose would suggest. Coffee, bittersweet chocolate, roasted peanuts with hint of smoky ash.

Medium bodied with a sweet creamy finish. Light to moderate carbonation with mild aftertaste.

Another winner from Boulevard. Simple but just complex enough to make it interesting. Excellent when paired with a chocolaty dessert.

Poured out of a 750 mL bottle into a small snifter style glass. One-time brew from early 2013.

Appearance - Black-brown in the glass, but has more of a cola/hazelnut appearance once the depth of the liquid is less and the head clears up. Foam is toasted marshmallow color with two fingers of head that retains for a bit before dissipating.

Smell - Fantastic. The aroma is all coffee notes. Roasty, rich, espresso and earthy smells.

Taste - More roasted coffee bean with some notes of caramel and spicy rye and malty sweetness. Some bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel - Pleasantly carbonated and lingering taste, but less intense than actual coffee.

Overall, an interesting beer. I can imagine it's fantastic to have along with dessert, and it's more of a sipping beer than something I'm going to tilt my head back and go to town on.
