Brewed by:
Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States

Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

BB Feb 2015

Beer has an interesting reddish-caramel colour, with a moderately sized beige head.

Nose is tart and malty. Balsamic vinegar, oak, vanilla, bourbon, some dark fruit. Quite a nice blend between the bourbon barrel and the tart beer.

The flavour seems to focus equally on the barrel and the sour base beer. Oak, vanilla and bourbon are all prominent- the former two perhaps more than the latter. They are coupled with acidic, balsamic vinegar-like sourness, some funk and caramel. Some fruity elements, but hard to peg and not pronounced. Finish reveals a bit of lactic flavours.

Full bodied, strongly carbonated but not irritatingly so. Astringent- the oak and sourness really dries the mouth quickly.

Overall, interesting and quite good. The barrel is well integrated and not at all overbearing.

a - poured a one finger thick tan head into a tulip glass that quickly dissipated to a thin ring. the body was a bubbly reddish-brown color.
s - big dark fruit aromas like plums, cherries, and grapes.
t - bourbon oak balanced by tart cherries.
m - medium and dry.
o - the bourbon barrel was done nicely here but i would have liked a little more funk.

Pick this up over in Annapolis for $9.99.

Served in a shaped wine glass around our pool.

A: Infinitely cloudy orange color with a slight whispy head... but that's not what this brew is about.

S: It's like Jolly Ranchers on sour steroids. A slight bit of sourness, milky, and with a good bit of acidity.

T: Totally acidic, not too sour, and with a slight case of the acetic blues. Pretty awesome.

M: Slight carbonation, but much more than one might expect from this style. I dug the sour disposition here. Not too ridiculous, yet great.

O: I didn't thing Love Child No. 2 was worth the money. Even though I bought this at a cutthroat rate, I thought it was worth the money plus $10+.
