"At over 100 IBUs, the hoppiest beer we've ever brewed. Pretty nervy for a bunch of Midwesterners." Brewed in the style of an American IPA. Available in 12 oz. bottles packed within the early 2014 Boulevard variety pack.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Smokestack tulip glass. Served above 47º Fahrenheit.

Mid-Coast IPA pours an explosive creamy foam banana-cream head over a golden amber body with heavy haze and flecked sediment in tow. Carbonation is spritely and plentiful, retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. The aroma consists of strong hop notes of juicy lemon, peppery spice and grass with a moderate bitterness over a solid biscuity malt base with a touch of grain. The flavor comes off a bit more shallow on the flavor, with a slightly drier lemon zest, a resinous pine sap pinch and a somewhat potpourri arrangement of spice, plus a lingering big herbal bitterness on the finish. The IBUs really come through in the taste on this one, menacing and powerful. The texture is somewhat slick, moderately oily, slightly dry, and a mellow carbonation keeps the mouthfeel relatively soft with minimal distraction. The body is medium+ for the style, medium+ overall, balance is moderately in favor of bitterness over sweetness, and the alcohol presence is fairly low, despite the age on this bottle, there's still plenty to hide. Off characters are minimal to none. This beer has likely seen better days, but there's no question that in its prime, this was a flavorful IPA with a ton of unique, lemony and grassy hop flavor and yet menacingly bitter with a strong punch in the finish. I am pleased that it held up very well and hope it makes a return or even a year-round status.

Best by date on bottle looks like 03/03/14...

The body looks bright gold and features a very thick, sticky, rocky, white head. Mild pine tar aroma. Orange and grapefruit flavors; juicy; light biscuit malt; decent hop bitterness brings up the finish. Medium-heavy body; crisp and dry finish.

Assuming this is an old bottle, it may explain the relative lack of hop aroma and underwhelming hop bitterness. At 100 IBUs, one would expect more hop punch. Otherwise, the beer is decent enough for an IPA. The juice-like flavors and lingering hop bitterness does satisfy the taste buds.
