Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A roasted smoky taste with medium hoppiness earmarks this as a smooth Sweet Stout. Its thick rich head is characteristic of all Stouts. While the flavor profile is dominated by a semisweet maltiness, the bitter hops balances the taste.

Had me a sample glass, 1/6 of their offerings on tap. (Protip: their light beers are awful)

Was jet black with a very thin bubbly head that only encompassed the rim.

Smelled fantastic! Heavy coffee, burnt sweet malts (sure, call it toffee and chocolate smell)

Feel was perfect for a stout in my estimation, mostly toward the heavier side of the watery-motor oil spectrum. I'd describe it as slightly thicker than whole milk. Meant to be sipped, but not incredibly heavy.

Taste: wow, complex, every flavor I'd want in a stout. Heavy with the coffee and hop bite up front, grades to sweeter roasted malt flavors, ends with lingering coffee taste on the tongue. That's right, grades to bitter to sweet back to bitter in one sip, with no flavor "bombs".

For my taste preferences, this is top tier, at least as good as Stone's Imperial Stout, Night Tripper, Yeti, Breakfast Stout, Zhukov's.

On tap at the brewery pub. According to the menu, one of four rotating stouts.

Black as night, thin mocha head recedes quickly and leaves a ring around the edge. A bit of spotty lacing.

Smell is dominated by dark roasted grains, but with a faint hint of malty sweetness. Not much legs. Better and more balanced when warmer and swirled.

Strongly of roasted grains and bitter chocolate. Some balancing malty sweet influence falls well short of balanced. Roasted grain, chocolate and hop bitterness lingers. I really like sharp roasted grains in my stouts, but this one was well out of balance.

Low carbonation, a bit creamy, on the thin side of medium bodied.

As stated, I really enjoy sharp, roasty and bitter flavors in stouts, but this one was out of balance on the bitter side. No way did I crave a second pint, and finishing the first was a bit of work. That said, maybe this batch is a bit young? I think they are on the right track with the recipe but missed the mark, perhaps with a bit too much black patent. Don't not try this due to my opinion! I noticed pre my review that the other 3 reviews, all one or more years old, gave it much higher scores.

Nice, nice darkness. Nice brown head. Nothing to say except that it's a nice stout pour.

Smells lightly and nicely rough with big coffee, very lightly bitter roasted chocolate malts, and then a wonderfully sikly sweet milk chocolate.

Taste is a nice blend of bitter and sweet, though it's not as balls out sweet as the smell had led me to hope for. Roasted malt up front--very dark and medium bitter--moving into a mocha middle and a little Hershey's kiss at the end.

This arrived with a light, medium-brown head that dissipated rather quickly. The nose was largely chocolaty with notes of smoke and charcoal. The mouthfeel was medium, due to the pour being a mix of N2 and CO2. The color was a deep, dark brown with light unable to penetrate the liquid. That chocolate taste was dominant everywhere – on the tongue, on the finish, in the aftertaste. I felt that this would make a fantastic dessert accompaniment or an addition to that Cola Cake at Empyrean BC. As it warmed, it got a richer chocolate flavor, and a chewier mouthfeel. Yum!

This beer was an absolutely perfect shade of Black with Ruby highlights and a perfect mocha colored head that laced all the way down the sides of the glass incredibly well.

Smell was of Bitter Chocolate malt and Coffee with some sweetness lingering through.

The taste was great, a heavy creamy sweet maltiness up front with coffee, chocolate, and toasted malt flavors followed by a suprisingly nice bitter chocolate like hop finish. Very good beer!

Mouthfeel was creamy and luscious with a nice thickness about it.

Drinkability was very good, although a very filling beer, if I had time would have definitly had another. Good Job Blue Cat. To bad this one is on the rotating schedule and not full time.
