Look: Produced a finger of head that didn't lace but retained somewhat admirably. The body is a slightly hazy yellow boast low but steady carbonation.

Smell: I'm catching ample lightly roasted malt and grain with an almost green tea note to it and a hint of pepper. Warming doesn't seem to really help it's case either way. Leaves a bit to be desired here.

Taste: Ample coarse malt profile as bread, biscuit and grain start us off walking seemingly just sweet enough. It then turns to that hint of tea note with some well reigned earthy bitter hops that don't go out of control. A slight touch of more sweetness and some more complexity would be nice. That said, not really sure that is what they are going for here. This is a very basic and simple, but done well and mostly right with a broad appeal that both craft and generic lager drinkers can like.

Mouthfeel: I like that the hops give the right bitter kick but never get out of control. It's got a nice crispness to it, that doesn't overplay it self. It transitions well, which is had better given it's simplicity and the carbonation stays consistent throughout the beer and doesn't peter out at all.

Drinkability: Just outside the wheelhouse of what I would call light bodied, which is a bit disappointing on this one. Easy enough to get down, and very refreshing.

Final Thoughts: I was expecting this to be a bit more Kolsch-like. I guess I can blame Beau's Lug Tread who also advertises itself as Lagered Ale and the Kolsch of the nearby Kilannan Brewery for thinking that. If I could get a pint of this with a Sola's Pizza at Sauble Beach, and watch the sun go down on the patio, it would be a good night. That said, this is what you buy your Lager loving friends as training wheels to craft beer. I don't see a lot of BA's seeking this one out.

473 ml can served fairly cold into a pint glass. Another LCBO purchase for about $3 CDN. Canning date seems to be August 23, 2017, but this just arrived in local shelves in the past two weeks.

Appearance - Pours a rich hazy golden colored brew with some transparency. Two plus fingers of cloudy and fluffy looking white head are poured and rest on top. Pretty damn good head retention as there's still a finger left a few minutes later. Plenty of sticky lacing clings to the glass.

Smell - Pretty spot on with lots of grain, plenty of caramel maltiness and there is a certain wheat quality (which shows in the ingredient list). There is also a subtle vinous and grape combo, that I find occurs with some pale lagers and kolschs. More caramel and maltier than these beers tend to be.

Taste - Despite a big nose and greta looks in the taste department there's just not a lot here. Some faint grape flavor and graininess initially, but the flavors wash away very quickly leaving not much of a lasting impression. A touch of pepper flavor shows at the end.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, carbonation is on the high end and pretty easy to drink. Could be gassy if consumed in large volumes.

Overall - Certainly not a bad brew, but as a couple of the other reviewers have noted, the taste just doesn't leave any lasting impression, and not that a beer of this style will pose the intensity of a palate wrecking IPA or a 10% ABV malt bomb stout, but even relative to style, there's just something missing. Worth a try and not a bad option as far as summer quenchers go.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; dated Mar 24 2017 and served barely chilled. I've had a few cans of this within the last week - if a beer is inexpensive and easy to find, I like to give it a few trial runs to consolidate my opinion before I commit to a review.

Pours a clear golden-yellow hue, generating nearly two fingers of foamy, white-coloured froth. It takes the next five minutes or so to seep off, leaving behind a wide collar of soapy foam and a thin cap, as well as some scant lacing. The nose is inoffensive at best, featuring notes of gritty, coarse grains and husks, bready sweetness and hints of grassy, tea-leafy hops. Not much going on so far.

The flavours fall along the same sort of lines - coarse grains and some bready, biscuity sweetness come through at the forefront, followed by apple skin and a grassy, earthy finish with gentle bitterness that briefly carries into the aftertaste. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that don't quite reach the level of crispness that I look for in this sort of style - it has a slight bite, but otherwise the mouthfeel is pretty soft. Passable as a summer patio refresher, but not a brew that will pique the interest of most BAs.

Final Grade: 3.49, a B-. Well, Outlaw's 21 Lagered Ale is a beer - a mundane one for sure, but still easy to swill and quite approachable. That's not usually what I'm looking for, but sometimes? A basic brew like this can really hit the spot. I'm not sure that I'd consider it a particularly good "lagered ale", however. On the plus side, I do like the packaging and marketing angle - with 21 being an obvious reference to the card game, but also referring to the number designation of the Bluewater Highway that goes through Southampton (and tracks alongside most of the eastern shore of Lake Huron).
