Appearance: dark, dark brown when poured with a dark tan head. Silky. Syrupy when swirled with great legs.

Aroma: it smells like a coffee shop/bakery – coffee and blueberry upfront then comes the coconut. Like waking up to someone cooking breakfast along with a fresh pot of coffee.

Flavor: hell yeah! This’ll work. There are so many layers, all so well done, and each being showcased individually. The blueberry sweetness is the initial flavor, which provides just enough sweetness to balance out this beer. The blueberry flavor is very mild. Then comes the coffee, which transitions into the coconut finish. Very little flavor from the cocao nibs. Very well done. How is this 15%!? There is no alcohol flavor or heat.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy. Damn near perfect in my opinion. The weight really comes through well in the finish, but isn’t overly heavy initially.

Overall: top shelf! I’d rate this beer alongside the most hyped imperial stouts, and at the very top for non-BA stouts. I’ve been less than impressed with Aslin’s IPAs thus far, but I’m blown away by this one. I’d buy this beer again in a heartbeat, and I’d try any similar variants. Excellent.

Canned ~11/1/18

Pours a deep black capped with a fairly thick, fluffy dark caramel head of at least 2 fingers; great retention, receding slowly to the point of a thick, tan froth around the surface and a fair smattering of thinner lacing to wall the glass. A great-looking stout.

Aromas of blueberry and coffee balance excellently as backbones of the bouquet, further enhancing notes of chocolatey roast, sweet, earthy cocoa, coconut husk, and minor, malty boozy interludes; faint coconut shavings on the back end add a bit more earthy sweetness, as well. Very dynamic and well-composed.

Taste highlights blueberry melding into the profile excellently, with a semi-sweet juiciness that courses through each element of the profile; milk chocolate, fluffy, semi-sweet roasted coffee beans, and coconut shavings all show their own character at points while consistently embracing an added depth of ripe juiciness; the balance here is what has this one standing out, as it never becomes too cloying while staying in harmony with its primary flavors.

Mouthfeel is thick, almost chewy, but lacking the weight I’d expect from a 15% stout, and I’m perfectly fine with that; a certain sly juicy quality shows throughout, especially in conjunction with the grittier roasty tones on the finish; slick, creamy, juicy, slightly sticky, and with just enough roast to round out the best of a big stout feel on the palate. This is really beautifully done.

This is an excellently executed sweeter stout that uses its blueberry addition in a relatively subtle but incredibly meaningful fashion; it is inherent to the character of the beer itself, but does dominate, allowing plenty of nuance to come forth through deep coffee and smooth chocolate notes. Ultimately, what’s left is a stout that embraces many faces, from roasty to sweet, fruity to juicy; all of which work seamlessly and make for an incredibly enjoyable beer.

Can, about a month and a half after purchase:
Wow! A bit impressed. Not usually a huge fan of Aslin's stouts, but this managed to get all the flavors into it and they more or less seem they belong together.

As with most Aslin stouts, the head became next to nothing, but it didn't fizzle away as fast as normal. Dark, dark, murky brown and obviously no lacing from what ponce was a nice brown foam atop the beer.

I could smell the blueberries as I brought the beer to my girlfriend. Dark chocolate more than coffee play bass, but the star is the blueberry - in a lightly tart, but definitely fruity way. The toasted coconut throws in a little flare on the side.

A quite creamy beer, the lack of carbonation (not still, but very muted) might be saved a tad by a slight alcohol presence. The coffee/cocoa/brownie of the malts and half the additions are quite well meshed. The blueberry is an impression at first, but closes in from the sides of my tongue. The coconut hides until the end, where it's just a whisper of a last bit of sweetness.

Yes, this is a "pastry stout," but a well constructed one, in my opinion. Would be a nice after dinner, dessert beverage, I think.

The beer pours a fairly brown and light head that dissipates very quickly. The beer itself is a decent dark coffee black with slight brown hues. It looks good but isn't anything impressive or different.

The smell is pretty good. It has a good mix and balance of coffee, chocolate, and blueberry notes in the nose. The coffee note is slightly roasted and a bit nutty and chocolate with a good cocoa note. The blueberry gives a good sweetness and mild tartiness that adds something well to the coffee notes in a good way.

The taste is nothing short of absolutely delicious. It's a predominantly coffee forward with a good nutty and chocolate note from the coffee beans. The cocoa manages to distinguish itself as a stronger and less better and slightly more sweeter chocolate. The blueberry is pretty good and comes out in a moderate strength adding a sweet and slightly tart contrast to the more bitter notes and lasts into the finish.

The feel is pretty good. It's thick with a heavy body with a lot of mushy texture and biting texture.

A fantastic beer once it's had some time to mellow out the blueberry. I definitely recommend getting your hands on one.
