Black Walnut Belgian Imperial StoutBlack Walnut Belgian Imperial Stout
Notes: A truly complex stout with hints of vanilla and coffee supported by a dark, malty base. We’ve taken a big stout and made it bigger with Belgian malts and candy sugar, making it a one of a kind Belgian Stout.

From tasting notes 3/13/20
Had on-tap at Barons' Beer Garden in the MKE Airport in Milwaukee, WI

Appearance - Served up in an imperial pint, pitch black in color with a tan, half finger width head that hangs for most of the drinking experience. Thick sheets of lacing.

Smell - Aroma hits on roast, dark chocolate, a hint of walnut and a trace of dark fruit.

Taste - Follows the nose. Roast and dark chocolate upfront and throughout, with a bit of earthen walnut quickly following. Raisin creeps in at the finish, and all four main flavors are found lingering in the aftertaste, along with a hint of booze.

Mouthfeel - Full in body with fair carbonation. Slick, smooth and with a hint of creaminess. Slightly dry finish.

Overall - Really nice imperial stout. Very much in the mold of an RIS, though the walnut adds a uniqueness I've yet to have in an impy.

The beer pours opaque and black. A lofty, light brown head that settles down leaving some lacing. As I drink the beer thick streaks of foam are left in the wake.

The aroma is nutty and woody, with bakers chocolate and some sweeter notes of milk chocolate. The roasted malt is intense and savory, bordering on smokey and meaty.

The intensity of the flavor profile matches that of the aroma. A full bodied beer with moderate carbonation, this stout offers a hoppy, lemony, pithy and bitter espresso bite up front, followed by an intensely roasted malt flavor profile with toasted, and bitter, nearly burnt bread. Earthy, finishing with nutty, and bitter coffee. Umami.

A huge ass stout. Not because of the 9.7% ABV, but due to the combination of the intense level of hopping, roasted malt bitterness and savory notes. A lot of different intense flavors combined. If you don’t like bitter, take a pass here. If you’re up for a unique stout with a bold attitude this beer may be the one for you. I am quite enjoying it!

Tasted in a Rastal Teku from a one pint can on June 27, 2019. A truly complex stout with hints of vanilla and coffee supported by a dark, malty base. A big stout and made even bigger with Belgian malts and candy sugar. One of a kind Belgian stout.

Black Walnut pours black, with no head. Big black licorice aromas. Flavors have lots of black licorice, and a bitter finish. Overall, a very big bold stout, nice bitter notes.

Poured 16oz can into tulip. It is jet black, with a 2.5 finger almond colored head. Fades slowly and leaves a cap with a good amount of lacing on my glass. Starts with deep roasted malts, a bit of nuttiness, the moves into coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Smooth, rich, full- bodied feel with good carbonation. This was definitely worthy of the medal it won.

Tremendous bitter Belgian Imperial Stout.

A ton of flavors packed into this beer. No walnuts used in brewing, but you get a nice bitter nutty flavor. Great hop bill and nice marriage of malts and yeast.

Very well done.

On tap at the brewpub. Hands-down the best beer I tried at the brewery during my session. Deep roasted malt character. Flavor profile did not remind me of a 'Belgian' style stout because it lacked Belgian yeast qualities like Allagash Black or something similar.

L: As close to oily black that you can get in the deepest spectrum of brown.

S: Strong presence of black walnut, undying scents of dark roasted chocolate malts.

T: Black walnut immediately hits the tongue with dark chocolate evolving quickly thereafter.

M: Viscous, thick. Nice and sharp when freshly cold out of the tap, warm and wonderful as the temp rises.

O: Great new beer with extremely limited availability. Seek this out if you have a chance, and let us hope that a barrel-aged version is not far off on the horizon.
