I struck out in an attempt to find some NEIPAs in my area to familiarize myself with the style. But the owner of the local good beer store recommended the new IIPA from Hubbard's Cave -- an off-shoot label of new local small brewery Une Année. He even went so far to tell me it was "close" to a NEIPA... not so sure, but here goes.

The label reports: Brewed 05/02/17. Bottled 05/25/17. Fresh by 07/06/17. Only 2 month shelf life, huh? At $10 a bottle, I'm not going to lay one down to find out.

Poured into my Libby tulip glass.

L -- Murky peach color with a sudsy, rather thin, white head that falls quickly.

S -- Strong pine resin up front with floral and citrus fruit characters (even as peach-like as the color) back. Even some herbal earthiness comes through.

T -- Strong piny, resinous hop characters up front with that same citrus fruit character back. There's a definite solvent-like alcohol character present in the finish and aftertaste, along with some of the herbal hop character and light bitterness. Citrus and resinous characters linger thru the aftertaste. Any malt character is completely masked by the dominant hop characters and mildly solvent hotness from alcohol.

F -- Mouthfeel is crisp and mildly astringent from the hops with a light-medium body.

O -- My overall impression of this beer, even for an IIPA, is not terribly favorable. The harsh, near astringent hop flavors (not bitterness, but that gets a little fatiguing on the palate, too) and alcohol hotness don't make this very friendly to my palate. I'm sure it's a winner to the current crop of craft beer drinkers, but I'll be the first to cast a balancing vote from the old guard and say this one is a little over the top.

On tap at Une Année. Hazy orange. Smells of orange, some garlic, a bit of butter, some alcohol and a little sweetness. Tastes of butter. Orange citrus. Garlic bite. Buttery finish. Pretty sweet. Heavy. Gross butter.

Pours a thin watery looking opaque gold-orange color. Fizzy white head dissipates steadily leaving no residual lacing or head.

Smell is very nice - rich mango, peaches, orange, and a touch of pine on the back end.

Taste is nothing like what I'd expect from the nose. You get some orange, peach and orange up front but it quickly gives way to a strong astringent bitterness. Very green hops come through with pine and bitter grass. For a regard IPA this would be considered astringent. For a NE style, this is way overly bitter.

Feel is very thin and almost watery - not the flavor, the feel is watery. It has almost no body. Carbonation is, surprisingly for a hub bards cave beer, not an issue here - medium slightly fizzy carbonation. Bitterness carries over into the feel leaving an astringent feeling in the mouth.

Overall this was pretty disappointing. The previous iterations of this series have been really well done, but this is far too astringent.

Hazy, opaque dark orange in color. Billow off white foam initially, but it recedes fairly quickly and leaves just a ring around the glass & slight layer across the top. Huge fruity aroma. Tropical fruits - mango, pineapple, guava - along with peach. Very inviting. The taste hits the same notes as the aroma, tropical fruit, peach, and a little pine as well. A stronger bitterness than I anticipated balances things out and doesn't let the sweetness overwhelm the beer. Medium body, low-moderate carbonation, and a moderate bitterness. Overall, a really excellent brew and definitely one I'd seek out again.
