Poured into a weizen glass a deep tawny brown with some chunkies and floaties swirling in the bottom of the glass a foamy 1/2 finger tannish colored head atop fading into a creamy mass.Inviting aromas and quite complex notes of green apple and clove show thru most up front with hints of caramel and bitter chocolate as well and a lingering banana character,a nice mix of weizen and bock going on quite sweet with a bit of an alcohol zip to go along with a clovey,banana character its not boozy but the sweet alcohol has a presence.Solid nothing to complain about more of a winter season beer but its good no matter what season really.

Interestingly enough, while BA has this listed at 7.2% ABV, the bottle claims it's 8.5%. Not sure who to trust here... but I'm gonna go with the bottle, just to be safe.

Poured into my big Catamount brewery mug that I like to drink porters and bocks out of, this beers appears dark brown in color, with a bubble-but-thin brownish head that thins out rather quickly. Reddish/orange hues shine through when the beer is held up to natural light. The aroma is a sort of a smoky banana scent, with some dense vanilla extract smells as well. I also get a slight burnt coffee sensation in the nose, which counters the sweet banana-ness nicely. Some clovey, pepper spices too. It tastes nice, bittersweet like a good weizenbock, but it just doesn't anything sexy about it. Nothing really jumps out and grabs my attention. It's a smooth, steady brew, with some nice features, but nothing spectacular. Mouthfeel is smooth and solid, but thin at times, and almost watery in the finish. On the whole, it's a drinkable beer, and might be best consumed in the fall or winter.

Dark brown brew, with some hazy sediment, off white head is a couple of inches tall with good thickness. Good retention.

Aromas of soft bananas and bubble gum, with some spice and a dark malt backbone.

Esters and dextrin depth up front. Weizen flavors include banana, clove and other spices. Smoky malt and rye grain, with a little bit of toasty husk. Some vague pepper warmth emerges as the beer warms a bit. Finish brings grain husk up front, very dry.

A little smokier than the Aventinus, an interesting style that I really enjoy. Nice use by Mahrs of the light nature of wheat combined with the gravitas of dark fruit flavors.

500ml bottle

Pours a dark chocolatey brown with a one finger head that fades quickly to a spotty cap and ring. The lacing doesn't stick to the glass at all.

Smell; lots of dark bready malts, with some caramel and wheat. There's some dark fruits with some prunes and a some cherries. Some cloves and bananas come through in the background. Overall though the aroma is a bit more mild that I would have expected.

Taste; this is sweet, but not to the point where it becomes to much. The malts are mostly caramel and bread dough, but there's also some hints f chocolate as well. The darker fruits come out in the middle with prunes and a touch of cherries, and the finish is cloves and bananas with a bit of an alcohol spiciness. Edit: as this warms up the banana flavors become much more dominant.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, with a very smooth laid back carbonation, and the drinkability is reall good as well. While this is pretty damn good, for the price I'll be going back to Aventinus for my weizen-bock fix, maybe even Pikantus.

Reviewed this beer previously, but it was so superior to what I had had previously, decided to update my review. First sampled on 5/25/07, but tried again last night (9/12/08).

On tap at the German beer festival at Max's last night. For me this was the beer of the night, absolutely stunning.

The beer pours a dark cola color with good head retention. It really looks more like a dopplebock then weizenbock, but that's not big deal. Nice looking beer, but nothing really special, until I took that first sniff. Amazing. This is easily the most complex dopplebock I have ever seen. I don't know what the hell Mahr's did to impart this kind of aroma, but it was amazing. One initially gets smoked bacon, grilled meats and smoked salmon. However, as the beer sits in the glass the aroma picks up some sweetness, and as God is my witness, gives off an aroma of barbeque potato chips. There is also some clove and banana in the nose, which just adds to the fun. On the palate one still gets that smokey flavor, but it's a bit more subdued. However, there is a fascinating interplay of chocolate and tartness, coupled with some banana and more clove. The beer is fairly smooth on the palate, with the alcohol pretty well disguised.

This beer was just excellent. Wish it were available on tap all the time, but doubt I can expect that. Oh well....

This beer pours a very dark beer with some red hues and a fine-bubbled head that lasts the entire glass.

Smell is malty and grainy with some clove notes and ripe bananas from the typical Weizen yeast in combination with the wheat. A big caramel maltiness makes the beer smell sweet and full.

Taste is grainy and leans stronly on the malt, that is also caramellic and adds a light maltbitterness. The yeast gives some nice banana and clovey notes, but not as strong as in normal Weizen. Bitterness is higher than the average weizenbock and for me it distracts a little from the nice malt and caramel elements. Mouthfeel is sticky and sweet, although not as sweet as other weizenbocks I have had.

The goat on the label looks pretty psyched to get his own beer...

Pours with strong carbonation into a weisse glass. Once the yeast is swirled, four fingers of foam rise and slowly settle. Faint aroma suggests tart green apples, and light gingerbread.

Taste is lively and fruity, similar to a Belgian dark ale. There's a strong nuttiness that comes across, some caramel, and vague clove. The effervescent mouthfeel mixed with the slightly sweet esters support this comparison, while it's wheaty fullness diverges from Belgian territiory. Despite the richness of flavor, this weizenbock is light on the palate.

I've had exceptional bottles and older ones that may have diminished in quality, so be sure to give it a second chance!

One .5L bottle is satisfying, but I wouldn't refuse a second.

This weizenbock poured a cloudy, brown-yellow color with creamy, pillowy, very light brown foam that persisted and clinged to the glass. The smell was caramel with a hint of sweetness and a hint of tartness, as well as a faint banana fruitiness. The taste was light citrus on top of malt with a touch of banana, and some caramel, and a note of coconut. The mouthfeel was smooth with a light tartness. The body was medium-full with low carbonation. Citrus, caramel, and coconut flavors lingered pleasantly. This was a nice beer, dangerously easy to drink, and the flavor improved as the beer warmed.

I had this bottle at the brewery.

A: Very murky, chestnut colour; off-white head, some retention and lace.

S: Light aroma of bready, caramel malt and banana.

T: Very bready, some banana, slight spicyness. I liked this a lot... not sure why I didn't have more to say?

M: Moderate to full body is very creamy. Light to moderate carbonation.

D: Very good.

Bottle. Found this in a supermarket in a small town in far North California. Full on banana esters, heavy yeast and clove. Spciy, with some lemon tang. Great relief to have a good whaet beer after the run of ban wheats i’ve had. Tasted more like a dunkle weisse, than a weizen bock to me. Still really elegant stuff.

Poured in a weizen glass. 750 ml bottle that says the beer was bottled on 02 04 04.

Appearance -- Very impressive in my tall weizen glass. The head is just incredible. Easily over three fingers. Very creamy and not going anywhere anytime soon. The head is actually kind of annoying because I can't reach the beer. Have to wait for it to go down just a little bit.

Color is a hazy light brown. Small bubbles are visible rising from the bottom in thin columns. A very nice beer to look at!

Smell -- Smells like a heavy oat kind of cereal to me. The kind of oat cereal that is very dense and heavy when milk is added. Dark fruit bread. Brown sugar.

Taste -- Tastes kind of like a sweet bread. Reminiscent of a heavy oat cereal. Pretty mellow.

Mouthfeel -- On the light side of the medium spectrum. Very light carbonation.

Drinkability -- I would drink this beer again if given the opportunity. I found it to be quite mellow for the style although it may just be that I bought an old bottle. The bottle I purchased was the last one and it must be pretty old given the bottled on date in early 2004. I'd like to try a fresh one to compare with. I'll have to wait and see if the store gets more in.

Murky dark brown with a noisy, brief topping befitting a 7.2% ABV wheat beer. Aromas of fruits and gums along with surges of butter, cream and cinnamon roll. An explosive tide of prickly gas leads to woodland and berry scented back flavors. Cleansing, mellow acidity powers the fruit. A sheer ribbon of dusty, tactile bitterness emerges late. The finish is astonishingly clean and limber considering the doughy, rich aromatics and reported ABV. Must be the acids. Old-school Rodenbach and Goudenband fans may find a sister wheat beer in this.
Mahr's standard Weisse can be quite tart and this is too, but with more weight this should be at least as broadly appealing.

We so rarely get new products on our SAQ shelves in this province that when I saw this I snatched up 4 half litres for a dinner party I'm having tomorrow.

Deep chocolate chestnut in colour with a light tan head of spritzy foam that dissipates rapidly leaving a bubbly ring that feeds off of the sustained and vigorous bead which rises relentlessly.

Aromas are not as complex as those of Schneiders Aventinus but are intriguing. Firm notes of malt and chocolate explode up front to be slowly be overtaken by a mild tartness. Some hints of ginger and thyme become apparent as the beer warms, bringing the brew some much needed complexity.

Flavours are an amplification of the aromas. The malty, chocolatey component dominates the flavour profile up front and is closely followed by a tartness reminescent more of sour cherries than the wheat malt used abundantly in the brew. Signs of brett keep returning as hints of citrus fruit race by and die off to leave space for a bracing alcohol bitterness.

The mouthfeel is firm but not overtly rounded, making this beer quite drinkable and very suitable as an apéritif before dinner. Enjoyable but still no match for Aventinus.

You know, this is really one of the only Weizenbocks I care for. After declaring that I didn't like the style in the BA forums I was directed to this brew as being much smoother. I have to say that I agree. No alcohol burn and lots of flavor!
Pours a nice caramel color thats has the typical cloudiness for a Weisse beer, but has a slightly darker color.
Smell is kind of like roasted bananas. No alcohol finish, which seems to be the main thing that separates this beer from the others of the same style.
Flavor is very crisp. Think of it like a potent dunkel weizen, but not TOO potent. No alcohol bite, and all roasted malt, banana, chocolate, and actually a lot of clove.
Mouthfeel is a little lite, honestly.
Drinkability is shockingly high.
Among the best of the style for me personally. The lack of an alcohol bite and the tons of flavor make this a real winner.

Hazy, deep brown colour with red-orange highlights topped by a thin, light brown head. Malty, caramel aroma, with very faint hops and some light fruity alcohol/vinous character. Overall malty flavour with a short burst of caramel balanced by a mild bitterness. Chocolate and fruit appear towards the finish. Soft carbonation with a medium/light body and a smooth, slightly drying texture. Quite a tasty beer with a balanced, soft flavour.

Hazy, almost murky, tawny with brighter orange edges. The golden ecru cap is large and airysoft. It deflates fairly rapidly, but will no doubt continue to threaten to overflow the glass on all subsequent pours. Unfortunately, it isn't the least bit sticky and is a poor lace generator. With a better lid, this could be a looker.

The nose is wonderfully aromatic and reminds me of some of the better dunkels and dark weizens that I've run across. It's primarily dark wheaty with swirls of caramel, chunks of bruised banana and substantial sprinkings of ground clove. Actually, it smells like the beer equivalent of black bottom banana cream pie.

Der Weisse Bock is a little (okay, a lot) more sour on the palate than expected and will take a few ounces to get used to. Tangy wheat mixed with melted caramel is still the star of the show. What tastes like hefe weizen yeast makes a valued contribution as well. Pungent clove spice and banana esters do their best to get noticed in the midst of the impressive sourness.

The various members of the flavor profile increase in intensity throughout the mouthful and are best appreciated on the back end as the sourness finally begin to fade. Have I mentioned that this beer is sour? The mouthfeel is medium to slightly more full and the finish is lightly sticky and slick. I wish there was a little more sweetness present since the unrelenting puckery tartness becomes wearing after a while. Brisk carbonation keeps things lively.

Mahrs Der Weisse Bock is a good rendition of the weizenbock style that could be great if it wasn't for the overwhelming (take a guess)ness. All the necessary elements are in place, they just need to be allowed to strut their stuff unimpeded. This is oh so close to a stellar rendition.

clear reddish-amber hue with a two-finger soapy head after alot of relaxation... initially this beer pours explosively. nose is a sweet banana puree with lots and lots of burnt-to-a-crisp sugar. stuck to the pan forever kind of burnt. taste adds that tart lemony wheat character to nicely balance the malty, sugary sweetness. very light body for something that brings dark corn syrup to mind.. but in a good way. finishes real clean with a nice berry hint in the aftertaste. love the aroma.. LOVE. savoury and i could sit and smell it all day. gets a bit tired in the flavor as it dominates and limits complexity and flavor potential.. needs some work to be perfect. as a dessert beer, this ranks high as-is. otherwise, additional balance is needed here.

Pours a dark mahogany brown, no head, but some nice lacing. Smell is rich roasty malts, oaked stout. Taste is alcohol, coffee, extensive malt, very nice, although not my style. Mouth is clean, crisp, medium body, highly carbonated with a slight burn while going down.

The beer pours a hazy brown color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a sweet and fruity wheat malt scent that boasts of clove and banana along with crystal malts. The taste is decent. It has a tart wheat malt and yeast flavor with a dry, sweet finish. It has a crystal malt sweetness with a dry, fruity finish. The mouthfeel is decent also. It is a medium/full bodied beer with a little too much carbonation. This is a pretty good beer. I like the aroma, but the mouthfeel needs more body and less carbonation.

Another nice find on tap at the Blind Tiger. Poured a hazy/murky shade of dark plummy brown with a soft puffy head, that showed moderate retentive powers. Sticky and fine lacing left on the glass. The nose was strongly fruity with a wiff of sourness and alcohol . This is a slightly sour, mellow, yeasty and musty concoction. Lots of complex fruit, spice and yeasty notes floating around. Interesting, sophisticated, old world brew. If you like a complex, strong German style Wiesse Bock, this one is well worth a try. I'd like to try a fresh bottle for a comparison.

Cloudy reddish-brown color with a huge thick off white head that leaves a sticky lacing in my Aventinus glass. Fruity and spicy aromas of bananas, cloves and vanilla. Wheat flavor with sour apples, vanilla and bubblegum. Full bodied with a prickly carbonated mouthfeel, finishes sweet and sour. Alcohol very well hidden, very nice.

Appears cloudy and orange/brown. Totally unfiltered brew, so there's lots going on in this glass. A ton of carbonation with a big head for about a minute, which soon fades.
Smells like bananas dipped in caramel.
Tastes like...a spicy bananana dipped in caramel! Tons of malt in the taste followed by citrus about a quarter of the way into the glass.Lots of fizzy bubbles rushing around my mouth from sip to swallow. Not overly crazy about the finish to this one. Slightly acidic and dry. Seems to cover up the alcohol real well. Authentic German style beer! I really dig the label a bunch. Cool looking goat lapping up the suds from an overflowing brew. It takes a while but this one will taste better and better as you start getting to the bottom. I still love my Aventinus for the weizenbock standby but this one is a decent brew to try out. It has it's own life that you certainly won't find from many others.

It was ok, dog.

Pours a very foamy and frothy, hazy caramel brown, topped with a four finger pillowy khaki head, leaves webs of lacing.
Fruity, spicy, alcohol aroma, clove, wheat bread.
Fruity, lime taste, wheat, clove, flowers, lemon, tea and herb.
Medium bodied, good drinkability in that I'll seek it out again, but I couldn't drink more than one of these at a time.

Dark cola brown with big tan foam on top. Drippy whimpy lacing with only a few strings grabbing to the glass. A fairly thick skim lasts nearly the whole glass.

Aroma is of those frozen chocolate covered bananas at first but seemingly doesn't last as more of a canned grape/orange soda pop comes through as it sits. Still keeps some of its cocoa underneath though, which helps it stay from getting overly sweet on the nose.

Unfortunately the taste brings in much more of the soda flavors then what the smell eludes to. Tangy, quickly dryish, wine-like spritzer mixed with cola sweetness is a bit strange to the taste buds. Cocoa dryness continuely gets beat out by the soda flavors and some metalic tones also make a pretty big entrance on the palate. This is what you get if you mix grape soda with a white wine spritzer that went under a powdered chocolate milk mix machines' can maker.

Feel is leaning towards a medium body, tangy, quickly whiped away by grapey dryness and is a tad high on the carbonation scale.

Too much soda stuff going on here for any real enjoyment on my level. Not something I'd seek out again or recommend.

The hills were alive with the sound of music with this one on 3/15/2005. 1 pt. 9 fl. oz. skinny bomber poured twice in a shaker.

Very fine and almost creamy initial head with some light stick. Amber hue but very thick in appearance with haze, but also active with lots of release. Juniper, sugar syruo, clover and juicy malt on nose. Awfully jumpy but a fine base malt that is thinned a little by a sweet grassy presence and a light treacle. Cooling, comforting pour with a lemony aspect which makes me think this would actually be a pleasant summer brew.
