Mahr's Bräu
Very Good
Notes: A U

After “A” comes “U” The “U” stands for “Ungespundet”, which means unfiltered and outrageously good. Simply pronounced, “Ahh Ooo”, like the two vowels, means you would like a U beer. No language skills required, and you finally have a great beer that doesn’t take a long time to order. What comes to your table, if one orders a U? You’ll get an extraordinary, yeast-turbid specialty beer with a full-bodied smooth-malt character. Pleasantly tart and lightly carbonated, it is a beer that goes just as well with a good meal as it does with a relaxing evening after work. Did somebody say, “cult beer”? Yeah, why not. That’s fine with us. Sure, you could always say “one” U. But experience has taught us that that’s rarely the case. Mahrs Bräu U beer pairing recommendation: with cold cut platters, Eisbein/Haxen, hearty dishes with dark meat.

COLOR: cloudy, amber

HOP: Hallertauer Perle

Pours a hazy amber producing a beige, foamy head that recedes rapidly to leave only a little cap, collar or lace. Lots of particulates swirl in the brew. Aroma is fruity, toasted bread. Taste is toasted bread, honey, fruity dried apple and bitter with a distinct Noble hop character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation; crisp with a nice prickle.

Lovely bronze body, slight haziness. Two finger soapy off white head that dissipates to a ring around the glass.
The aroma is surprising, a little bready, a little bit of honey. Grainy for sure and floral.
The taste is malty, grainy and with a touch of honey sweetness that is balanced out by full but delicate floral hops.
Soft, smooth mouth feel. Almost oily. This finish is seltzer-like and is dry as it gets.

Pours a light golden color with a white head that sticks around. Slightly cloudy, and within the style guidelines. Unfiltered and I would assume aged in cave like conditions.

The aroma is funky, including noble hops, lemon, malts, grass, and tea. The taste starts off with a wall of bitterness upfront, giving way to a slight tartness. Plenty of malt and yeast notes, bready, with some lemon tartness pulling through as well. Solid herbal hop flavor lingers on with repeated sips, surely adding to the citrus flavor going on here.

Full bodied lager beer with a medium to high carbonation level, very nice and prickly on the palate. The finish is slightly dry, crisp and rather clean. Drinkable as any lager out there, this was easy to down the 1 pint .9 oz bottle.

Overall, this is a lovely beer, and one that certainly enforces the great beer reputation of Germany. I've had plenty of Kellerbier in the states and nothing has gotten me as excited about the style as this one. If I had a cave in my backyard you know damn well what I'd be doing, only difference is mine wouldn't taste this good. This is impressive stuff from Mahrs-Brau.

The color is a hazy amber-orange with a average-sized head. The aroma is of very full-bodied toasted malts. The taste has a similar character as the aroma. Full-flavored toasted malt taste is joined by a touch of raw grain flavor. Very fresh and complex tasting. The sweet finish is a perfect capper for this beer. This is excellent stuff, very highly drinkable. I wish more brewers would take this style on.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber color with a modest head that quickly declines to a ringlet and archipelago and leaves only the occasional shard of lace

Smell: Grainy malt aroma with a hint of herbal hops

Taste: Starts with a grainy flavor that becomes bitter and dry, in a herbacious way, after the swallow; there is a hint of caramel malt that lingers and builds throughout that counteracts the bitter flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with modest carbonation

Drinkability: Another good beer for the summer months; good crossover from the Euro lager style

A decanted pour reveals a deep golden beer with a hint of amber and a moderately tall head that sticks around for a minute and then settles down to a fine layer. Swirling rouses it up to finger-tall again.

Aroma is forceful yet pleasant- very bready and creamy with accents of grass, apricots, caramel and lime peel. There is some real depth there and it lasts throughout the glass.

The yeasty/bready character dominates the palate, with the caramel and fruit coming on in the finish followed by a touch of hops. The mouthfeel is moderately full with just enough carbonation to keep it interesting.

This is a wonderful beer that gives you two different experiences ( the bulk of this review was done decanted for a baseline approach) - it is incredibly well rounded and complex but really comes alive at the end when you pour the yeast into the glass. I assuredly advise you to do so.

Well, damn if'n I didn't get lucky! I've been wanting to try this style for a while, and it's hard to come by... so when I saw an assortment of 4 - 5 Mahr's brews available, I remembered they made one... and somehow, the "Ungespundet" made me think this was the one I wanted. And so it was.

So now, the review.

This beer poured out a hazy yellow, with a thin layer of foam that died down to nothing almost immediately. I don't know if it's supposed to have a head or not. Still, it looked wet and inviting.

The aroma... tangy hops, pepper and other spices (but not clove), hints of lemon and perhaps some other citrus, and slightly floral. Quite a layered effect from such an unassuming beer.

Taste was basically strong, light malts, overlaid with a little bittering hops and hints of citrus and pepper. Overall well balanced.

Mouthfeel... again, hard to say, never having had the style. But it was a little thinner than, say, a good pilsener, so I guess I'll use that as a reference.

Drinkability was very good. If I could get it at a store closer to me, I would definitely get it again. Glad I got to stop in where I did.

Rich copper color. Aroma and flavor reminds me of a floral, perfumey Magic Hat #9, but worthy of more respect than that. Apricot is apparent (and unfortunately not my favorite flavor in beer). A little more sweetness than I like, but good to explore a style outside of the norm for these parts.

This pours out a rather limpid amber color, with a head that disappears quickly--not very appealing, but it goes with the style. The nose is rather pleasant: sweet, slightly grainy malt, with a... herbal? tinge. Hard to identify. Taste is a bit disappointing. The grainy malt doesn't offer much of interest. Moderate hoppiness dries out but the hop flavor is limited. Not much else here.

Disappointing beer. Kellerbiers can be good. The Wolnzacher Hell is excellent, for instance. This is just bland.

Sampling right now on 2/15/15. Comes in a single 500ml (16.9 ounce) bottle for around $5.00. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a .3L boot.

Brew pours a hazy golden-yellow in color with about a half-finger white foamy head. A good amount of sediment is seen in the bottom of the bottle after the pour. Some sheets of lacing is seen when sipped. The aroma is mostly of sweet malts for the most part including caramel malts. Pretty much is said for the taste which also includes a hint of citrus, which is probably orange. Goes down easy with no bitter or hoppy finish. Smooth and well balanced brew. Medium-bodied with medium carbonation. Overall, a good brew.

BB 02-01-06, Good appearance with white and lasting head and a bronze/amner beer that has a good and thick fine haze. Nose is flowery, litle hoppy, malty with a light creamy; diacethyl like Nose. Further a carramellic smell and litle yeasty. Taste is also good beeing full, malty, good bitterness with litle yeasty note and only a slight sweetness. To bad this one is so high in diacetyl that after a while when it heats up gets more and more noticable. Still yes this is a quiet good example of a refreshing kellerbeer with good mouthfeel and fine carbonisation making it enjoyable and dinkable even with the diacethyl taste.

Look: Pours with huge, thick, white (very light orange hue), solid, rocky head. Quite a sight. Slow, good retention, leaves a very thick, medium sized layer on top, fair amount of sticky lacing through. Clear golden orange with slightly messy pale haze.

Smell: Fresh noble hops - classical pilsner, delightfully aromatic. Grainy, pale malts with some melanoidins. Some very light lemony sourness.

Taste: Light/medium good and solid malt backbone sweetness, reminds to some extent to weizen characteristics with some melanoidins. Light sour lemon notes continue and ends with light grainy/münich sweetness and light to medium noble hop bitterness. Does everything right.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, crisp, fresh enough, easy to drink fast.

Overall: Impressive, well crafted beer. Was expecting something dense and fatter, but got a crisp pilsner with good package of malt character, perfect to drench your thirst.

Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head and lots of tiny yeast particles suspended in the glass. Smells of doughy, caramel malt and grassy hops, with just a hint of musty yeast. Taste is dominated by sweet'ish doughy, caramel malt and somewhat musty yeast, with just hint of honey, fruity esters and grassy, slightly floral hops. Finishes with a light bitterness and some doughy malt and musty yeast lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

A Zwickl that is quite dominated by the sweet malts and musty, slightly tart yeast character, with the hops taking a major backseat, which just makes this a bit too sweet and one-dimesional for my personal taste.

Poured from the brown bottle a cloudy golden color with a head that reminded me of a fluffy cloud. Taste reminded me of a german version of Fuller's ESB. This is good for me since I love that beer. Slightly hoppy and bitter, this makes for a tasty beer. Nice lacing all the way down. I'll be buying this again.
