Pours a clear golden color with a medium top off white head that dissolves quickly.
Aroma is of bread, sweet malt, grains, honey, grassy and herbal hops.
The taste is sweet and grassy with bready malt notes in the background. The finish is quite bitter with grainy notes allong with grassy and herbal hops. Mouthfeel clean and crisp with a medium carbonation and a medium body.
A nice and enjoyable maibock.

This is part of my BJCP training/study, so I'll be reviewing this to the style guidelines. 4C. Helles Bock

Pours a mild fizzy slight foamy head, fair retention but not the large persistent head that is expected of it, crystal clear deep golden almost tan color

Nose brings a lot more malt in general than the other two in the category, but more deep slightly caramelized malt and sweetness with more overall malt without the depth and complexity as the other two, mild Maillard caramelizations as expected, although maybe those get a little too much as it gets a little candy like and quite sweet for the aroma, no real hop aroma

Taste brings more of the same deep rich malts with mild Maillard caramelization notes, but not too much, sweet perception but not really too sweet, a little toasty, doesn't seem to have as much of the decoction mash complexity as the Munich Helles (Weihenstephaner), again almost candy like flavor and a little caramel but like a pale blond caramel somehow, a touch of grassy floral hops and mild bitterness, otherwise fairly clean, a bit of warming alcohol but much, finish is quite dry and clean, a bit more hop bitterness kicking in to balance the lingering sweet tasting malts. As it warms the malt brings a touch of a stale character or maybe astringent but not quite, and increased bitterness.

Mouth is medium bodied, medium tingly carbonation, a very light warming alcohol, otherwise clean, right on with style

Overall pretty good with the style, which is not exact but this does well. Definitely more of the sweet Munich like malts and less of the decoction layered toasty malt, with more bitterness than the Munich Helles, as well as clearly more overall malt and alcohol. With all that said I still feel like this was a little more one-trick rather than complex like I expected it to be. It's also that little stale like malt character at the end after it warms that brings the score down a tad, not sure if the beer is older than it should be, or if the malts were not the freshest themselves, or if that's a side effect of the style, but doesn't seem like it should be there.

Additional info. The bottom of the bottle had plenty of yeast chunks, so this is likely older than it should be drank at. With no date on the bottle I can't tell for sure. So I'll give it some leniency, and try to have it again fresher. I tried to re-review the Paulaner Festbier for this BJCP study as well, but it was clearly older than it should have been and was not nearly as good as it should be, so I didn't bother re-reviewing it. While this isn't that far off, it likely has some old parts that have brought it down a bit.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6.5%. Clear golden colour, moderate white head. Slightly sweetish but pleasant aroma of light malts and floral and herbal hops, hints of honey and newmown grass. The flavour is slightly sweet, but not too much, distinctly malty, but also with distinct floral and herbal hops, and a bitter finish.

Poured from half-liter bottle into a stein. Interesting appearance. Translucent dark orange-yellow in color, with a thin white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Interesting aromas and flavors as well. Solid malt presence as expected, but the yeast and hops contribute spiciness and citrus notes as well as a smooth bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium, with a clean and slightly astringent finish. Very tasty and satisfying beer, great pairing with dark breads, sausage, and aged cheese.

500 mL bottle, no date.

Deep gold color with a slight haze to it from being unfiltered. Small white head with good retention. The nose consists of sweet malty goodness but it's not too heavy, as some bocks can be. Also getting the slightest bit of fruit in the form of apple/pear in there as well. Rich bready malt flavor with very light herbal hops. Medium bodied and very smooth going down. Super clean tasting despite being both unfiltered and unpasteurized. Not the most complex bock, but among the most accessible and easy to drink. A winner in my book.

From a 500 ml bottle (no date that I could find) to a nonic glass.

A-The beer is lightly hazed with lots of bubbles visible in the liquid. The head is tall, maybe two fingers from a gentle pour, and off-white in color. Retention is pretty good at a few minutes. The beer is lighter in color than many beers of this style.

S-The aroma is quite doughy and suggestions of white bread are strong. There is a little hit of hops in the form of citrus and dried grass, but I mostly sniff honey, dough, and light hints of caramel.

T-The taste follows the smell pretty closely. Lots of dough and bread notes with just a subtle hint of grassy hops. The finish gives a little bit of pepper and cereal grain, but the overall impression is one of honey, bubblegum, and wonderbread.

M-The body is pretty substantial on the palate with a lighter volume of prickly carbonation. Drinks easy.

O-I cannot say this is my favorite example of the style, but it is pretty good beer. I have no idea how old this bottle was before I cracked it open, but I suspect that a fresh example might provide a little more hoppy kick, which would have really helped my score.

The bottle label lists the ABV as 6.0% while the brewery's web site lists both 6.8% and 4.9% (!?).

Mildly cloudy, pale yellow body; lots of carbonation; thick, frothy, white head. Light grain and biscuit aroma; some herbal and grassy notes. Mild, almost fruity character; stale lemon; bitter. Medium-light in body; somewhat fizzy; overall dry finish.

A rather light and quirky German bock beer. There is a tad too much carbonation and the flavors, although not strong, don't really come together in a satisfying manner. Not bad yet certainly not a top-notch example of the bock style.

Poured a light golden color with a 3 F head in a Pilsner glass. The head took a while to resolve.

The aroma was sweet fruit, and as noted by other reviewers- bubblegum.
Rich and pleasant.

The mouth feel was very malty as expected of the style.

Taste: sweet fruit with a good transition from the aroma.

The beer finishes with a light, dry bitterness.

The flavors broaden with warming. Very enjoyable. Will buy again.

Overall, a traditional, wonderfully drinkable German Helles-Bock.

Found this at a semi-local I used to frequent a lot more. Their imports were dying on the shelves, and it showed. I think they've cleaned up their act a little, so fingers crossed.

No date to be found on the .5l brown bottle.

L -- Pours a rather hazy straw-to-golden color with a persistent, creamy white head.

S -- Aromas of bready malt and lightly spicy to citric hops.

T -- Big, sweet, tasty, bready malts up front with that light graham cracker character. The sort of malt flavor that's only found in fresh German lager. The breadiness lingers through a sample with the mildest of herbal & bitter hops in the finish to balance out the sweetness.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light-medium body, very good to-style.

O -- This is a terrific rendition of a Heller Bock. Great malt character that begs gulp after gulp. The only ding in the scoring is the lack of good lager clarity, not sure why it's so cloudy. Makes me wish I was sitting at Mahr's Bierhall in Bamberg -- next best thing.

Poured on tap into a full Becher glass at Chuchkey.

Minimal collar presented but what an interesting looking brew. Light pale bronze, no head presented, but a real unique washed out but still light golden color. White tan collar presented with excellent carbonation and clarity.

What a killer aroma. Classic dense German malts, and a whiff of bubblegum of all things. Dense as all can be, slightly minty, and with a big sense of husky malt and sense of thickness coming. Crazy wicked stuff.

Palate matches just more of the notes on the aroma. Thick controlled body with lots of malt depth and coating. Mint and almost peppery finish with a sweet caramel and bubblegum candy. Hints of peppermint, and dense malt, thick grain, chewy mouthfeel all over.

A real interesting bock from these guys, and from a great brewery.
