This is a different kind of weisse true to the label.Poured into a weizen glass more clear than cloudy burnt orange/amber with a large glooming crown,it has a Schneider weisse look to it with its deep richness in color.Yeasty but not over phenolic in the nose, toasty wheat malt, fruity esters, and herbal hops come thru, one of the more hoppy hefe's I have had, maybe the most hoppy from Germany.Yeasty and fruity on the palate with a tinge of iron and toasted wheat malt, again the saphir hops play a role in a herbal finish. This is a cool hefeweizen it's yeasty but clean with a nice hop presence.

Cloudy amber appearance, a big head, implying a lot of carbonation, which will later be proven in the mouthfeel, a little belchy.

Once the aroma opens up, it shows nice spicy clove and subtle banana, and a uniquely floral hop presence. Smells nice.

Similar taste with lively carbonation make for a pretty good experience. I would rate it higher if it had just a tad less carbonation and a little more malt balance in the flavor.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 500ml bottle into a weizen glass. The label lists the abv at 5.6% and on the back there is a short description of the beer its use of Saphir hops. There is no freshness date however.

Appearance: The body has a heavy haze and a dark brownish amber color. It is full of yeast and at the bottom of the glass there are some small chunks of yeast sediment. Up on top it shows off a thick three to four finger tall, long lasting head. This head is off white in color with a few spots of brown yeast sediment. Lacing on the glass is slick and slides right down the sides as I drink.

Smell: The aroma has fruity yeast with loads of banana with a little spice and a hint of apple. Hop notes are faint and way off in the distance.

Taste/Palate: The flavor reflects the nose with loads of banana notes from yeast as well as some light clove, bubble gum and a touch of apple. Towards the end I notice more wheat bread and bubble gum notes and a light touch of hop spice and bitterness. The palate is smooth and a little thick or full feeling.

Notes: Overall it was a very tasty and enjoyable brew. The only thing it lacked was the look and feel and even that wasn't a big detraction.

Poured into a 5 oz tasting glass from a 16.9 oz bottle.

Explosive thick white foamy head that held its own well. Unfilitered cloudy rich with small bubbles that translated into a very nice crisp mouth feel.

Taste was a dry and balanced nectarine zest w/ coriander. The texture and weight make this beer a satisfying meal by itself but does not leave you bloated.

On the take home scale, I would take a six pack of this beer when I could find it.

Mahr's Bräu "Saphir Weiss"
500 ml brown glass bottle without packaging codes or freshness dating
$5.99 @ DeCicco & Sons, Brewster, NY

Interesting beer. I was expecting a straightforward weiss beer with Saphir hops but this has some caramelish malt to it as well. It's a cloudy amber beneath a massive head of off-white foam. It looks like a light colored dunked weizen. The aroma is caramelish as well, but the typical banana and clove yeastiness is there too. What I'm not finding in the aroma are the Saphir hops. There's some, but not much. More appear in the flavor but I've never found Saphir to be more than just another floral "noble hop" with a hint of citrus added in. It has an orange and apple fruitiness to it, and, of course, banana. Other than that the Saphir doesn't really stand out, obviously hindered a bit by the firm, caramelish maltiness. In the mouth it's medium bodied and quite effervescent. It's nicely balanced if a little bit on the malty side, and it's pleasant and satiating. Definitely different, and certainly worth trying because of it.

Picked up a bottle at Abe's Cold Beer for $3.85. This is a pretty tasty beer, but overall it's a little too mild. The appearance is a proper hazy amber, a little darker than usual I suppose. The aroma has a slight chemical aerosol note that's off-putting at first, but that fades into a spicy floral combo. The flavor is slow to develop (that's awesome), starting with a white cake and wheat bread crust. That's followed by candy clove, orange peel and sweet banana notes that eventually falls to bittersweet, but smooth, wheat and bread notes. All in all a very bready with interesting spice and fruit notes. Heck of a brew. Reminds me a lot of SN Kellerweis.

This hefe weiss is like none I've ever had before. There is this unusual funk smell and taste to it. If this is the Saphir hop edition doing this then what an unusual hop it is. I can't decide if it's good or bad. For true to style it sucks, but for being different its pretty dam good.

nice orange-amber hue. Smells of banana and clove. Taste is very similar to many good weizens, but nicely hopped. Not bitter, but later flavor and aroma hop additions make this truly a hefe at heart with hoppy background. Great beer, I highly recommend this as a cheaper Thiriez-type beer.

Spotted this new one today, thought it might be a fruity blueberry/huckleberry brew due to the label design (blue hop cones). "Extra Hoppy Amber Weiss" on the back label.

Deep orangey amber, huge voluminous head that takes a few pours to let settle then top off. Plenty of sticky, sparkly suds inside the glass. The retention is excellent, it's head is steadfast with little deflation.

Typical hefe aroma, banana esters, a light minerally character, and mild background spice.

Very smooth and flavorful. Deep bready malt flavors, like fresh baked banana bread with a dusting of nutmeg. The wheat gives it a pleasant supple feel, though there is a mild apple astringency upfront. Not especially hoppy, like Brooklyn/Schneider, but a fine beer in it's own right. Tasty and quenching on a warm day.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Dark bodied, orange and muddy brown color, with very fine carbonation. Little head creation, a creamy off white almost egg brown foam color on top. Settles easily with a flat bumpy top of a finger.

Very nice simple nose. Spicy lemon and tropical hop notes, followed by a classic banana estery component. Subtle but with a hop presence that dominates. A bit unexpected for a hefe but a good nose.

Very nice palate. Light bodied but soft enough malt depth and easily coats the flavors on the palate. Hop forward once again, almost a tropical wash of pineapple slightly in the mid palate. Aftertaste follows classic banana aromas, with a bit of herbal oil hop content. Hops are definitely prominent more so than the malts or even the yeast.

A nice different take on a hefe, and a unique hop angle that fits in for the base style. Just a bit unexpected to find a hefe that's hop forward, but this works out.

A: The beer is cloudy yellowish amber in color and has a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high dense off white head that has good retention properties and never completely faded away.
S: There are aromas of bananas, cloves and yeast in the nose.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell, except the hops contribute citrus flavors and a light amount of bitterness. There are some hints of malty sweetness in the initial taste.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: The beer isn’t quite as refreshing and thirst-quenching as compared to other hefeweizens, but the saphir hops certainly make this beer unique for the style.
