From: John's Grocery, Iowa City, IA
Date: None on bottle
Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Mastodon is not a bad naturtrüb bier from Mahr's, but pales in comparison to their normal unfiltered offering and many others of the type. The aromas and flavors are enjoyable, but excessively mild, while the beer is overall too carbonated. All this is a bit of a shame, as everything I enjoyed at the brewpub was exceptional, and I was looking forward to sampling this domestically. Perhaps it's age and the stresses of long-distant shipment, but there's no way to tell with no dating on the bottle. I wouldn't pay to drink this again unless I was in Germany or it was on tap.

Pours a 1.2cm tall head of white colored foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, fairly frothy appearance. Retention is average in length, about one minute, the foam eventually falling to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass. Lacing is not present. Beer's body is a fairly dark golden-orange color, with light bringing out brighter golden orange hues (bordering on very dark golden yellow). Carbonation is visible through the beer's body, numerous and quite active.

Aroma is quite mild, of light caramel-like sweetness and toasted bread with a slight yeastiness.

Overall flavors are of mild bread crust and caramel-like sweetness, with hints of yeast and hop bitterness in the background. Front of palate is of mild caramel-like sweetness with slight bread-like qualities and a modest yeast character. Mid-palate of continued light caramel-like sweetness, a bit of bread crust flavor, modest yeastiness, and adding in an unexpected light fruitiness and hop bitterness in the background. Back of palate tastes stronger, but still fairly light, bread crusts with light hop bitterness and a background of yeast and faint caramel-like sweetness. Aftertaste is quite mild, of bread crusts, light caramel-like sweetness, and a touch of hop bitterness.

Beer is medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium-high intensity, leading to a mouthfeel that is at first fizzy, gradually tapering to a fully foamy mouthfeel, a bit too carbonated for the beer and the style. Closes dry, with light to no stickiness clinging to the lips and palate.

Decanted in conical pint glass. Poured with a dark eggshell white head, nice legs but little lacing, and ongoing effervescence. Honey golden color with haziness throughout. Nose full of kiwi and pears with maybe a hint of lactic acid; tastes a balanced mix of medium roasted malts. Very playful, nice medium balance in the mouth. Really a pleasurable experience.

Picked up a bottle at Astoria Bier & Cheese. It's a great keller. I can smell it the second the beer hits my glass. The aroma has a mix of white bread, light caramel, fresh dough, and a hint of fruit ester. The flavor follows with a rounded, bready malt character, subtle, spicy hop character, and a shot of citrus fruit. Very fun and interesting beer. Go try one.

L: Pours a golden brown with less than a finger of white bubbly head. It rather quickly recedes.

S: Bready malts.

T: Bready, doughy malts. Very fresh tasting.

F: Super smoth, moderate to highly carbonated.

O: I'm glad I had this. If more lagers were like this, I'd drink them more often.

Pours a slightly hazed honey/amber color with 3 fingers of rocky cream colored head. Stays effervescent throughout. Average lacing and head retention

S: Breadyness, a little pear & wet grain

T: Breadyness, pears, grassiness & a little cakeyness, plus a little herbal bitterness up front. Grassyness & pears as this warms, plus bready sweetness. Finishes grassy with herbal bitterness, a little cardboard on the edges not enough to ruin this, but it is there, plus a little honey-dew melon showing late to the party

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, okay balance

Drinks alright, I suspect this might be old, but since I can't find a date on the bottle, we'll never know. There is something in the lower left corner, but I can read it. Still tasty despite the slight hint of cardboard

From the bottle in a snifter. This decent little keller pours a lightly
cloudy medium amber with a fantastic head of off white foam that
subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and features some very attractive sudsy
lacing. Nose of grassy hops, crackers, breaded malts, and subtle caramel malts.
Flavors follow the nose with mild caramel and grassy hops balanced by mild baked
breaded malts and a light cracker finish. Nice mouth feel; medium body, smooth,
satisfying, and a lightly sweet finish with grassy hops. Overall, a very nice little
brew that is worthy of trying.

Cheers

Poured into a tulip glass, it billows up with a voluminous head of white foam that retains some good coverage for the rest of the glass. Spotty sudsy lacing. Intentionally cloudy, it says unfiltered on the label, glowing sunset orange color.

Clean, floral, grassy aroma, simple and true to style.

Bready and crisp, simple and seamless. Medium bodied with a light crisp bitterness that dries out quickly in the finish. Fresh floral hop notes that are somewhat subdued, but complement the dry crackery malts nicely. Pricey for what it is, but worth a try from this quality brewery.

Poured on tap into a becher glass at Churchkey DC.

A real supper creamy one finger head presented, nice and solid and ultrafine. Deep uniform orange amber and apricot colored body, with some lemon lighter hues along the sides. Beer has a little bit of fine carbonation, and laces with nitro like sheets and rings all along the glass. A mighty fine looking brew.

The nose though disappoints in comparison. Very closed and subtle dough malt body slightly, but a bit hard to detect.

Palate comes with a real nice chewy body. Mid palate fills with soft baked bread, and some sweet bakery yeast like flavors. Creamy and dense body, which coats everywhere in the palate. Subtle flavors that hit nicely.

A good solid keller that just seems to be fairly basic and enjoyable. Real easy drinking to match.

Poured into a Ayinger pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a half finger white head with good retention and slippery lacing. Aroma of bready and biscuit malt, noble hops with an interesting light dried herb component. Flavor is nicely balanced biscuit malt and light dry grassy and woody hops typical of German lagers. Light hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied. A nicely made classic, mellow helles lager.

Mahr’s Bräu Mastodon has a thick, unusually fizzy, off-white head, a very hazy (which becomes murky, when the sediment is swished & poured in), gold-orange appearance, and lace curtain left behind. The aroma is of sharp, sweet & sour bread, yeast, and a grass of some sort. Taste is of those elements, with a low-level, balancing bitterness, weeds, red soil, and cream. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and chewy, and this beer finishes a bit cloying and full. Overall, it is a sipper and surely not a gulper. One would be hard pressed to session this lager.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellowish amber in color and has a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bread and toast malts are present in the nose along with some hints of fruity yeast.
T: The overall taste is rather malty and has flavors of bread and toast and faint hints of sweetness; these malty flavors transition to notes of spicy hops, apples and a light amount of bitterness towards the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't stand out compared to Munich Helles Lagers, but the unfiltered nature and complexity in the taste make it seem more reminiscent of a Keller Bier or a Zwickel Bier.
